Overview

About the property

Character Grade 2 listed traditional 2-bedroom cottage, wood burning stove, wifi

Fully refurbished, Applethwaite Cottage is a Grade 2 listed traditional 150 year old Cumbrian stone cottage situated in a secluded position down a short driveway just off the High Street, ideally located to enjoy all the delights and experiences the Lake District has to offer. Sited at the top of Windermere, Applethwaite Cottage is just a few minutes' stroll away from the traditional pubs, wine bars, cafes, restaurants and amenities in Windermere.

We are only a couple of minutes walk from Windermere railway station, which is the end of the line, but from where trains can be caught to Staveley (try the Brewery or Wilfs Café), Lancaster and beyond. The Lake District tourist buses also stop at the railway station so ideal for catching the bus to Ambleside, Grasmere, Hawkshead etc. So don’t worry if you don’t have a car!

Applethwaite is a one minute walk to the centre of Windermere so shops, banks, cafes, restaurants are all close to hand. We are also just a minute's walk to the start of Orrest Head Walk - one of Wainwright's walks and one of Windermere's best vantage points. A 20 minute walk up Orrest Head reveals views across the fells, roof tops of Windermere and onto the Lake itself and on a clear day offering views to Scarfell, Helvelyn and to Morecambe Bay.

Or walk through Windermere and take a right down to the quieter Lakeside and enjoy the view walking around Queen Adelaide’s Hill. If you’ve brought your own kayak then this is an ideal spot away from the busy piers in Bowness to launch (car parking is available at the Rayrigg Meadow car park).

Alternatively take a walk down the hill to Bowness to the cinema, shops, cafes and bars and enjoy boating on the Lake; catch the ferry over to Brockholes and Go Ape, Ambleside or Claife Heights.

And with the Dales Way only a stroll away there are lots of great walks on the doorstep.

Applethwaite Cottage is the first cottage of a row of only four cottages, and offers a cosy, traditional, homely feel with modern facilities. Tucked down a driveway and behind a gated fence Applethwaite has an open front pebbled garden area with a table and chairs, ideal for catching the Lake District sunshine.

On entering the front of the cottage you walk into the living room with wooden floor and wooden cabinet for hanging coats and storing shoes on one side and handy shelves on the other side, wood burning stove on a slate hearth (an original slate tile from the roof of the cottage 'rescued' by our next door neighbour many years ago), bespoke open wrought iron balustrade staircase, TV/DVD player, wireless Bluetooth speaker and selection of books, DVDs and family games.

Walk through to the spacious dining kitchen with electric oven and induction hob, washer dryer, microwave, fridge with icebox, toaster, iron, church pew and dining table and four chairs. The kitchen is well equipped for all your cooking needs.

Upstairs are two decent sized bedrooms and a bathroom. The larger front bedroom has a kingsize bed with memory foam pocket sprung mattress, bedside chair, wardrobe, drawers, bedside cabinets and bedside lamps, freestanding mirror, hairdryer and a double USB charging socket (ideal for charging phones/tablets etc).

The rear bedroom has two single beds with memory foam mattresses, wardrobe, bedside cabinet with bedside lamp and window seat.

There is a modern bathroom with bath, electric shower, electric shaver socket (inside mirrored bathroom cabinet), heated towel rail and underfloor heating.

All bed linen is provided and the beds are made up ready for your arrival but please bring your own bath and hand towels.

If you require a set of towels this can be arranged for a nominal cost as we appreciate if you’ve arrived by plane and/or by train that space in your luggage is limited.

For guests with very young children we have a travel cot (please bring your own cot bedding) and a highchair available at no extra cost.

To the rear of the Applethwaite is an enclosed slate paved courtyard with a table, chairs and BBQ. For cyclists there is a ground anchor and bike cover and combination padlock for securing bikes.

Whilst there is no dedicated parking with Applethwaite you are able to use the driveway to drop off/unload/load. We then park on nearby streets - the closest being College Road which is only a minute's walk away.

BT Infinity unlimited broadband is installed.

We are pet friendly and happily accept well behaved pets with no extra charge.

We can accommodate any changeover day so there are no restrictions on when you can start your stay. If you wish to stay between 4-6 days please message us through the site and we can provide a quick quote.

Prices are as stated with no additional charges made for providing travel cot and/or highchair or for taking pets. All rental prices, regardless of length, include welcome pack (containing starter supplies of tea and coffee, milk and wood for the log burner) and cleaning cost.

Cosy and clean cottage in convenient location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in Applethwaite cottage. We didn't have a car and it was a great base for us, from where we could explore the Lake District. Thank you.

Owner's Response: You’re welcome - thank you for choosing Applethwaite as your half term base - I think you had everything from sun, snow and rain during your stay so glad you were able to explore the Lakes. We’re lucky that the railway station and Lakes bus stop are only a minute or two walk away and the boats at Bowness only 20 minute stroll down the hill so you don’t need a car to get out and about.

Perfect weekend away at the Lakes

  • 5 of 5

This was mine and Amie's second stay at Applethwaite Cottage for a girly weekend away, and once again it did not disappoint. We stayed in both nights rather than going out because it was too cosy to leave the wood burning fire! During the day we went walking and bike riding and enjoying the local coffee and cake. The cottage was still in immaculate condition with everything we needed, but so much character at the same time. Thank you once again for an amazing weekend! We will be back later this year hopefully!

Owner's Response: Welcome back! Glad the cycle hire worked out for you both - 2 minute walk to the cycle hire shed (next to the railway station) and then you were sorted. Hope to see you back soon.

Fab little cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great little break here. The cottage is in a great location and has been really well renovated. Andrea and Paul had left us a lovely welcome pack including bubbles for New Years Eve. Thank you for having us!

Superb! Cosy cottage in a great position for seeing surrounding areas.

  • 5 of 5

The photos don’t do the cottage justice. A fabulous cosy cottage, spotlessly clean, everything you need is available. Parking was not a problem over Christmas week. Andrea communicated well with me, she left a lovely Christmas welcome pack and had decorated the cottage very tastefully. We had a great time and will be back.

About Andrea

We're Andrea and Paul and we've been coming to the Lakes for many years as a "switch off" from work. Initially camping on basic campsites with toilet facilities our children did not approve of and then in caravans and cottages around the Lakes. We finally took the plunge to purchase our own property for both ourselves, and hopefully others, to enjoy.

Andrea purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Andrea chose Windermere

We have been lovingly refurbishing the cottage and we hope you will like what you find. We are tucked away off the main road in a secluded position but only a short walk from Windermere railway station, which is the end of the line but from where trains can be caught to Staveley (try the Brewery or Wilfs Café), Lancaster and beyond. Applethwaite is a one minute walk to the centre of Windermere so shops, banks, cafes, restaurants are all close to hand. We are just a minute's walk to the start of Orrest Head Walk - one of Wainwright's walks and one of Windermere's best vantage points. A 20 minute walk up Orrest Head reveals views across the fells, roof tops of Windermere and onto the Lake itself and on a clear day offering views to Scarfell, Helvelyn and the sea. Alternatively take a walk down the hill to Bowness to the cinema, shops, cafes and bars and enjoy boating on the Lake. Alternatively catch the ferry over to Brockholes and Go Ape or Ambleside or Claife Heights.

Ideally situated for local buses to Ambleside and Grasmere or Hawkshead.
