Overview

About the property

Character Grade 2 listed traditional 2-bedroom cottage, wood burning stove, wifi

Fully refurbished, Applethwaite Cottage is a traditional 150 year old Cumbrian stone cottage situated in a secluded position down a short driveway off the High Street, ideally located to enjoy all the delights and experiences the Lake District has to offer. Sited at the top of Windermere, Applethwaite Cottage is just a few minutes' stroll away from the traditional pubs, wine bars, cafes, restaurants and amenities Windermere has to offer.

We are only a short walk from Windermere railway station, which is the end of the line but from where trains can be caught to Staveley (try the Brewery or Wilfs Café), Lancaster and beyond.

Applethwaite is a one minute walk to the centre of Windermere so shops, banks, cafes, restaurants are all close to hand. We are just a minute's walk to the start of Orrest Head Walk - one of Wainwright's walks and one of Windermere's best vantage points. A 20 minute walk up Orrest Head reveals views across the fells, roof tops of Windermere and onto the Lake itself and on a clear day offering views to Scarfell, Helvelyn and the sea. Alternatively take a walk down the hill to Bowness to the cinema, shops, cafes and bars and enjoy boating on the Lake; or catch the ferry over to Brockholes and Go Ape, Ambleside or Claife Heights. With the Dales Way only a stroll away there are lots of great walks on the doorstep.

If you don't fancy walking or driving Applethwaite is ideally situated for local buses to Ambleside and Grasmere or Hawkshead.

Applethwaite Cottage is the end Cottage of a row of only four cottages, and offers a cosy, traditional, homely feel with modern facilities.

Downstairs, on entering the front of the property into the living room with wooden floor and original wooden cabinet for hanging coats and storing shoes on one side and handy shelves on the other side, wood burning stove on a slate hearth (an original slate tile from the roof of the cottage 'rescued' by our next door neighbour many years ago), bespoke open wrought iron balustrade staircase, TV/DVD player, wireless Bluetooth speaker and selection of books, DVDs and family games.

Walk through to the fully fitted dining kitchen with electric oven and induction hob, washer dryer, microwave, fridge with icebox, toaster, iron, church pew and dining table and four chairs.

Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The large front bedroom has kingsize bed with memory foam pocket sprung mattress, bedside chair, wardrobe, drawers, bedside cabinets and bedside lamps, freestanding mirror, hairdryer and a double USB charging socket (ideal for charging phones/tablets etc). The rear bedroom has two single beds with memory foam mattresses, wardrobe, bedside cabinet with bedside lamp and window seat. There is a modern bathroom with bath, electric shower, electric shaver socket (inside mirrored bathroom cabinet), heated towel rail and underfloor heating.

All bed linen is provided and the beds are made up ready for your arrival (but please bring your own bath and hand towels).

On arrival a welcome pack is provided including an initial supply of wood for the wood burning stove and tea and coffee.

For guests with very young children we have a travel cot with cot bedding and a highchair available at no extra cost.

To the rear of the cottage is an enclosed slate paved courtyard with table, chairs and BBQ. For cyclists there is a ground anchor and bike cover and combination padlock for securing bikes. To the front is an open gravelled area (fenced off from the driveway with access only for the four cottages) with table and chairs.

Whilst there is no dedicated parking with Applethwaite you are able to use the driveway to drop off/unload/load. We then park on nearby streets - the closest being College Road which is only a minute's walk away.

BT Infinity unlimited broadband is now installed.

We are pet friendly and happily accept well behaved pets with no extra charge.

We can accommodate any changeover day so there are no restrictions on when you can start your stay. If you wish to stay between 4-6 days or longer than 7 days please message us through the site and we can provide a quick quote.

Prices are as stated with no additional charges made for providing travel cot and/or highchair or for taking pets. All rental prices, regardless of length, include cleaning.

About Andrea

We're Andrea and Paul and we've been coming to the Lakes for many years as a "switch off" from work. Initially camping on basic campsites with toilet facilities our children did not approve of and then in caravans and cottages around the Lakes. We finally took the plunge to purchase our own property for both ourselves, and hopefully others, to enjoy.

Andrea purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Andrea chose Windermere

We have been lovingly refurbishing the cottage and we hope you will like what you find. We are tucked away off the main road in a secluded position but only a short walk from Windermere railway station, which is the end of the line but from where trains can be caught to Staveley (try the Brewery or Wilfs Café), Lancaster and beyond. Applethwaite is a one minute walk to the centre of Windermere so shops, banks, cafes, restaurants are all close to hand. Alternatively take a walk down the hill to Bowness to the cinema, shops, cafes and bars and enjoy boating on the Lake. Alternatively catch the ferry over to Brockholes and Go Ape or Ambleside or Claife Heights.

Ideally situated for local buses to Ambleside and Grasmere or Hawkshead.

We had a great stay in this lovely cottage. Andrea and Paul have kept the character of the cottage and renovated in a tasteful way. Great location, Handy for shops, eating places, pubs, and walks.( Would recommend El Porton Tapas. food and staff great. Crafty Baa good atmosphere and variety of craft beers.) Comfy beds, Lovely touches e.g. flowers and yummy cake!! Communication from Andrea was perfect. We were sorry to leave and would love to return.

Owner's Response: Thank you! So pleased you enjoyed your stay and liked how we have renovated Applethwaite. The cake is locally made by the bakers in Bowness! Hope you’re able to stay again in the future.

Fantastic cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from Applethwaite cottage after staying for the half term week with our children and dogs. The cottage has a 'home from home' feel to it and has everything you could need in a holiday cottage. It has been tastefully refurbished to a very high standard by Andrea and Paul. It is ideally located in the heart of Windermere village, where there are numerous quality restaurants and bars.

Our whole family had a great holiday and we will definitely return!

Brilliant location, perfect cottage to explore from

  • 5 of 5

We have just, very sadly, left Applethwaite after a few days initiation to the Lakes.

The cottage is larger than it looks in the pictures, cosy and very comfortable. The log fire is a real treat after a long day walking. Kitchen is extremely well equipped, including condiments, washing liquid, dog treats! Andrea's legendary welcome pack is very welcome indeed- to arrive to fresh bread, milk, butter and cake means you can settle in without immediately dashing to the shops. Andrea was the perfect host, messaging helpful hints and weather updates before our arrival, which were greatly appreciated.

The cottage is ideally located, opposite the train station and Booths supermarket, five min walk into the cafes in Windermere, a few minutes from the start of the Orrest Head walk (which is an absolute must!).

We will be coming back to stay at Applethwaite, and recommending it highly to our friends. Thank you Andrea!

Owner's Response: Soooo pleased you’ve enjoyed Applethwaite Cottage and the Lakes! And glad you were able to get out and hopefully missed the storm and there’s nothing nicer than walking in after a day out and lighting the log burner. Look forward to you all returning :)
