Overview

About the property

Large, spacious house with 4 Bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 8 - 10 + cot

Situated at the end of a quiet lane and perched above the attractive village of Ogeu-les-Bains, the house enjoys spectacular panoramic views of the mountains. An ideal base for a family holiday, with a heated swimming pool (8 x 4 metres), a large enclosed and safe garden (5 bikes, badminton, table tennis, boules, darts, football goal available), barbecue, south-facing terrace with table and seating for 10, and an indoor games room. In a peaceful setting, but within easy access of the mountains, Spain, the Pays Basque, Lourdes, Biarritz, Bayonne and the Atlantic coast, and a huge variety of activities all year round - skiing at Gourette (40 minutes' drive), hiking, white-water rafting, horse riding, fishing, golf, paragliding. This much loved family holiday home has a recently refurbished and fully-equipped kitchen, a brand new bathroom upstairs with separate bath and shower, a spacious open-plan dining/living area, separate sitting room with TV/DVD, downstairs twin-bedded bedroom and downstairs bathroom with shower. Upstairs are two twin-bedded rooms (one with extra pull-out bed), a large double bedroom and the large new bathroom. Chill the days away if you wish, swimming or sunbathing, or head up into the mountains; sample some of the delicious local food and wine. Relax totally just sitting on the terrace as you gaze at the mountains - every bit as good as meditation. There are always plenty of birds to observe in the sky - from buzzards to sparrow hawks to vultures to Eagles.

Accommodation: Inside: Downstairs: Large L-shaped and open-plan living/dining area and kitchen. The living area has a wood-burning stove and in the dining area there is a large table and seating for 10. Two sets of French windows open out onto a large south-facing terrace with wonderful mountain views. The spacious and well-equipped kitchen leads off the dining area and is newly fitted (includes dishwasher, fridge/freezer and microwave). A third set of French windows in the kitchen open out onto the garden. There is also a separate sitting room with TV/DVD and a good selection of books, games, CDs and DVDs in English & French. Also downstairs is a bedroom with two single beds, a shower room with WC and a cloak/boot/boiler room which leads into a garage. In this garage are a washing machine and tumble dryer. Upstairs: large galleried landing; two twin-bedded rooms (one with third pull-out bed); one double-bedded room; cot and 2 inflatable mattress available on request; brand new large family bathroom.

Outside: The large enclosed garden is mainly laid to grass, so is ideal for games or just for relaxing in. The garden surrounds the house, so there is always a cool spot to be found even in the height of summer and a selection of deck chairs and loungers to relax in. The heated swimming pool has a child-proof cover and solar shower. 4 sun-loungers are provided and there are also floats and pool toys. The terrace is ideal for 'al fresco' dining - morning, noon and night - with stunning panoramic views of the mountains and the barbecue and pool close by. A large second garage/indoor games room has lots of equipment for family games, including table tennis, badminton, boules and darts, as well as 3 adult bikes and 2 children's bikes, all of which guests are welcome to use. There is a separate orchard below the garden which can also double up as a mini tennis court - net and rackets provided.

Getting there: The quickest way of getting to Ogeu from the UK is by air from London Stansted or Bristol or Birmingham or Dublin or Manchester to Biarritz, Tarbes, Toulouse or Bordeaux. Ryanair have daily low-cost flights which take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Easyjet and FlyBe also have flights which are worth checking. Car hire is available from the airport - we tend to use either Rentalcars.com or Holiday Autos. Other airports within easy reach of Ogeu are Toulouse (2 hours 30 minutes) and Bordeaux (3 hours). There are also daily flights from Paris to Pau.

Ogeu has its own train station and it is possible to travel to the house by train. You could, for instance, take the TGV to Pau and then catch a train directly from there to Ogeu.

French motorways are excellent if you want to bring your own car. Some visitors have used the ferry crossing to Bilbao or Santander which are approximately 3 or 4 hours' drive from Ogeu.

HERE ARE SOME COMMENTS TAKEN FROM OUR VISITORS' BOOK:

We have fallen in love with this beautiful area of France and your holiday home has made the perfect base from which to explore this region. There is much to see and do in this relatively unspoilt area and we hope to return in the not too distant future to sample more of the local cuisine, soak up the atmosphere and seek out further treasures. Thank you for a wonderful fortnight. LEVY-CHANCE FAMILY (HEREFORDSHIRE)

We all loved the pool and the fantastic views ; the area was great to discover – day trips to Oloron Ste Marie and Lourdes ; up to the Col de Marie-Blanque (great scenery !), Louvié-Juzon fête and Castet for a picnic. Local boulangerie is very good and the grown-up boys liked the local bar. WITHERS FAMILY (HAMPSHIRE)

We’ve had a fantastic fortnight ! Hours of swimming, table tennis, badminton and boules. A wonderful trip on ‘Le Petit Train’, breakfast picnics at Cromlech and Lescun – the latter is without a doubt one of the most beautiful bits of the Pyrenees. Views from the house sublime. KING FAMILY (IRELAND)

GALLAGHER FAMILY (GLASGOW, SCOTLAND)

A wonderful time with the ever-changing sky and the mountains ! Delightful long lunches under the awning on the patio ! The pool was wonderful ! Very, very quiet and restful. Thanks for a terrific holiday ! (ODA AND ROBERT HODGE, TORONTO, Canada)

We enjoyed the location with the fine mountain view and did a lot of swimming in the perfect pool with its most welcome heating system. (it was the end of September). The weather appeared rather changeable and we noted that clouds frequently changed direction (pretty unusual for Dutchies). Our trips into the Hautes Pyrenees were magnificent. (VAN LEEUWEN FAMILY, UTRECHT, HOLLAND)

Great Christmas holiday. Wonderful scenery and places of interest. Sunny days made it a memorable stay. SING FAMILY (MID-WALES)

Thank you – we’ve had a wonderful holiday and experienced new places yet again from our last visit 3 years ago. The area is outstanding and of course the pool just brilliant and very welcome with the very hot weather. Visit to Gourette in the mountains highly recommended, along with La Foret Suspendue – brilliant ! Found some new places to eat including La Trinquet in Oloron – fantastic! Thanks again! (DAVIES FAMILY, SHROPSHIRE)

Many thanks for a fabulous two-week stay and you couldn’t ask for a more beautiful view. The house is well equipped and we really felt at home – so much so that we didn’t want to leave! About Annabel Warburg

Annabel and Thane Warburg are English. They both studied languages at university where they first met. It was Thane's cherished dream - throughout his career - to own a house in the French Pyrenees. As a French teacher and Francophile - he teaches in an English boarding school - he fell in love with the area when visiting it as part of his university course. Annabel and Thane have two sons - James (20) and Angus (16). The whole family love France, mountains and the incredibly friendly local Bearnais.

Annabel Warburg purchased this house in 2004

Why Annabel Warburg chose Ogeu-les-Bains

We simply fell in love with the house and its situation as soon as we saw it. The magnificent views of the mountains as far as the eye could see to East and West thrilled us - and we never tire of sitting on the terrace gazing at the mountains, the view changing imperceptibly minute by minute. The house's raised elevation above the village means there is always a cooling breeze on even the hottest summer day. We first saw the house on a blistering hot day but were delighted to find it was cool inside. The reverse is also true - we have put in central heating and a wood-burning stove so that it is very cosy in winter. Having a heated swimming pool is a huge luxury as far as we are concerned but we fully appreciate it. We also love the huge garden. The locals are incredibly friendly and the food at the local markets and served in the fine restaurants is delicious.

Stunning house and garden, great owners

  • 5 of 5

Ogeu Les Bains Review - 5 stars.

We have stayed at the house for 3 consecutive summers, and can only report positive memories and a genuine love for the house and the area. If you are looking for a holiday that will have nice weather in the main, stunning scenery and total peace this is ideal.

The House

Over the 3 years, the house has evolved with small improvements made by the owners each year, such as the wooden flooring through the upstairs and the main living areas, or the re-modelled upstairs bathroom. There is ample space for 5 adults and 2 children. The upstairs bedrooms are spacious and the landing area creates a nice communal space. The bathroom is new and soacious, and the view from the window must be one of the most picturesque that can be found. It is especially pretty after dark, as the village below lights up and the Pyrenees create shadows in the gloom.

Downstairs there is a very spacious, well-equipped kitchen area and a large dining table, an open plan area by a large fireplace where a sofa sits and can allow a very central seating point. There is a downstairs TV room, that seats for 5-6 people comfortably. To the rear are 2 large double door exits, front door and a large window in the TV room, all of which overlook the pool. The kitchen has a modern fridge, oven, hob, microwave and dishwasher.

There a covered tiled area that allows outdoor eating under cover, which is especially useful to provide shade on very warm days! This area leads down to a gorgeous heated pool. Minimal maintenance is required and all the instructions for this are provided by the owners. A new pool heater was put in recently, again showing the owners commitment to maintaining the property to a high standard. The pool is gated and fenced to the entrance from the house, and secluded by hedging around the sides and rear. It is plenty big enough to have a decent swim and children love it.

The area is incredible, get up into the mountains and take the artouste train and walk round Lac de Bious-Artigues, is its truly breathtaking!

The owners could not be nicer, more helpful and supportive when we had any problems (including calling a doctor for us when our lad was ill) and over 3 years have really improved the property. They are flexible and genuine people that respond very quickly to any questions. If you want nature and to relax in comfort book it, just be prepared to never want to leave.

A wonderful week in a very special place.

  • 5 of 5

We felt immediately relaxed in this charming house. There's everything you need there and more. The pool is gorgeous - you can gaze up at the sky or across the mountains in complete privacy. The air is so pure and fresh, the valleys are truly spectacular, the locals are very friendly. We so enjoyed choosing wild mushrooms at the local market and travelling on Le Petit Train d'Artouste. We cannot recommend it more highly - we're so delighted that we had the opportunity to discover this wonderful area. Even at the end of September we enjoyed 5 warm sunny days, and on the other 2 we curled up by the fabulous wood burner.

We would definitely recommend getting there via the Bilbao Brittany Ferry - it was a fun way to travel, with lovely dinners and lots of time to relax.

Comfortable and spacious house w/really good vibes

  • 5 of 5

It was just what we needed, a quiet place where we could relax and unwind. Amazing views, star-filled skies and breathtaking surroundings, including some interesting neighbors (horses and sheep) that just added to the overall charm. We had pretty good weather so we were able to enjoy the pool as well, heated to perfection! Our host Nathalie was a delight when she greeted us. The info they have about the destination is quite comprehensive and we had no problems getting to the house with the directions Annabel provided. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could ever imagine. In fact, there were a couple of items we decided we had to buy for our own kitchen! Annabel made the whole booking process a breeze, very responsive and quick.

Empfehlenswert!!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic.

Beautiful. Gorgeous views, beautiful area, lovely house. Excellent in every way. Highlight? Swimming in the pool, stopping to lean head back and gaze up at the sky - and spotting a group of seven Egyptian vultures gliding overhead (positive id via binoculars!). Also loved the stag beetles who buzzed around every evening.

Great base to explore the Pyrenees

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location of this house with fantastic views and easy access to the mountains, whilst still having easy access to Pau and the coast. We wanted for nothing in the house which was spotless for our arrival and notably well equipped in the kitchen, plus plenty of equipment for entertainment from dvds to table tennis and the fab pool.

It is a great base to explore the mountains. We had a week of fine weather and spent much of it outdoors looking at the amazing views, birdlife and rambling the well signposted walks. We were impressed by the files of local information and comprehensive set of walking maps available at the house.

Many thanks to Annabel and Thane for making the booking process so straightforward, and for sharing their lovely french home.

Ogeu-les-Bains is an attractive large village in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Many of its houses date back to medieval times and it is famous as the source of Ogeu water - the mineral water of the Pyrenees. From the house it is a ten-minute walk to the local supermarket, which sells all essentials and is also a very good baker's. The village also has a chemist, post office, DIY Store, cafe/bar, an excellent restaurant and a train station with regular trains to the fine and historical city of Pau or in the other direction to Oloron Ste Marie. Oloron is ten minutes by car or train and has plenty of other shops and restaurants. There are some beautiful walks around Ogeu and stunning walks in the nearby mountains. The area is a paradise for cyclists with many famous climbs in the local area. It is also an ideal base for exploring the Parc National des Pyrenees and the two magnificent valleys, the Vallee d'Aspe and Vallee d'Ossau. The picturesque Basque area is also close by.

Skiing: Gourette, the local ski resort, is a 40-minute drive away and is a first-rate resort for both the beginner and the expert.

The French Government invested 20 million euros in upgrading it recently and this has turned it into a first-rate resort. It is rarely crowded and much better value than most Alpine resorts. We tend to check snow conditions on a daily basis when in the house using broadband access to Gourette's webcams. This enables us to pick the very best days for skiing. La Pierre Saint-Martin and Artouste are each about 45 minutes away, Cauterets and La Mongie approximately one hour; and there are also a number of resorts specialising in cross-country and ski de fond within an hour of Ogeu.

Here are some comments from our Visitor's Book:
