Overview

About the property

Drangway is Grade II listed and is set in the church square in Stratton, a once thriving village, now very quiet but it does have two excellent pubs and a village store. The cottage has two bedrooms, one double and one single, a sitting room and dining room, a bathroom and a galley kitchen. Character features abound with stone, slate and ancient oak beams and as it is our home away from home you will find everything there you need to make your holiday complete. Stratton is two miles from Bude and the dramatic Atlantic coast and there are many beautiful drives and walks, some from the door. Stratton is a very friendly and laid back village and has a renowned and historic pub, The Tree, where you can find local beers and good food, which is only 100 yards away. Bude has everything a seaside town can offer including restaurants, shopping and supermarkets. Further afield down Cornish lanes you can visit the Eden Project, St Ives, Port Isaac, Padstow, Bodmin Moor and back towards Devon, Clovelly, Dartmoor and the historic capital of Exeter beckon.

About Diana Smart

I grew up in Exeter, Devon, but then lived and worked abroad for quite a few years. Until I retired, I worked in London and I now live near Exeter.

Diana Smart purchased this cottage in 1890

Why Diana Smart chose Bude

As far as I am aware, the first connection with Drangway was when my great great aunt lived there at the end of the 1800s. I have no idea when the cottage came into my family but it has been passed down through the generations and has been much loved. My great great aunt came from a farming family near Kilkhampton - there were nine children and only one married - my great grandmother. At some point Aunt Lizzie moved into the cottage and ran a wine shop from the dining room.

What makes this cottage unique

As Drangway is our family's second home and we love spending time there, it has a lived in feel. There is a great sense of history - from the worn slate floor in the kitchen to the ancient oak beams which look deeply riddled with woodworm but when the electrician tried to drill a hole in one, he had a really difficult job - they are made of heart oak. Drangway was formed when a manor house was divided up in the 1700's, so the back of the cottage dates from the 14th century and the front extension is Georgian. Whilst creating a bathroom (it didn't have one until the 1970's) we found ancient carved pews being used as joists in the Georgian part. They are sadly under the floor, so you just have to imagine . . .

Wonderful beaches for swimming and walking, cliff top paths, pubs and tea shops, farm shops and supermarkets. Many restaurants to choose from and plenty of shopping in Bude. Bodmin Moor is wild with ponies, highland cattle and the remains of bronze age settlements. Further afield is the Eden Project, St Ives, Padstow and Clovelly.

Medieval and charming.

  • 4 of 5

A lovely old home with many original features. Quirky it is. We weren't sure about it at first but, after finding our way around, it was delightful. Not many holiday cottages can offer this level of old English charm.

Period cottage, modern amenities but with a very old and historic feel.

  • 4 of 5

Drangway is a tiny time capsule. As you enter, you take a step back into cornish history . Obviously the cottage has been bought up to date Regarding utilities And modern conveniencees, but the overall Feel is one of history. To be perfectly honest, it was not what we are used to when on holiday, but once we got used to the atmosphere Of the place it was fine. The cottage is extremely Quiet! Especially At night, and can exude an eerie feel, the church bells sounding every 15 minutes Adds to the spooky Aspect, but this doesn't at all detract from the cosy feel of Drangway. Stratton Is very quiet and laid back, and having walked around the village I would definitely Say that Drangway Is one of the more singular Properties.

Excellent very well equipped comfortable cottage

  • 5 of 5

Chose this cottage as we wanted something totally different and we enjoyed our stay very much. Beautifully appointed it made an excellent base for us touring Cornwall and North Devon coast. Weather was bleak for the time of the year but even that didn't deter us from getting around Would love to return at some point in the future. Thank you.

Drangway was a lovely old cottage that was very comfortable , well equipped, warm and cosy.

  • 5 of 5

The village is ideally situated for exploring North Cornwall and after a day on the coastal paths or on the beaches a very nice meal could be enjoyed at The Tree Inn just a short walk away.

Lovely characterful Cottage, spotlessly clean, tastefully furnished, everything you need for your stay is provided.

The Tree, the local pub does excellent food - nice atmosphere, friendly locals.

Good base for exploring Cornwall and Devon.

Five stars - highly recommended.
