About Julia and Richard Voke

We live in Bristol but have been holidaying in Pembrokeshire for the last thirty years. The beauty of the coastal walking and the ever-changing sea never cease to lift our spirits and replenish us, allowing us to deal with the hustle of our busy lives. It is a wonderful area for photography with beautiful views and wildlife. We also love the outdoor activities and enjoy swimming, surfing, kayaking and coasteering.

Julia and Richard Voke purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Julia and Richard Voke chose Nolton Haven

We were drawn to Westerly because of the closeness of the sea and Pembrokeshire coastal path. All of the activities we enjoy can be accessed from the cottage without having to drive.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We very much enjoyed our stay at Westerly thanks. It was a perfect location for surfing as we had a choice of many surf beaches depending upon the conditions. The boot and wet room is a great addition and really useful after a day out getting we

t and sandy. As was the hose pipe and drying line outside for sandy dog and wetsuits.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to other surfing groups.

Notes:
Westerly is an ideal setting for those who want walking access to the beach (2 minutes walk) and the coastal path (even closer). The sandy beach with its rockpools will give endless entertainment to children, while the birdlife, sunsets and breathtaking views will stimulate artists, photographers and walkers. When Nolton Haven beach has been explored there are famous and spectacular surfing beaches 1 mile to the north (Newgale) and to the south (Druidston). This allows both a relaxing and an active holiday (there is plenty of equipment provided). The village setting provides a quiet backdrop with easy access to the local towns/shops/attractions/cinema etc. From the front of Westerly you can hear the sea, to the rear the stream at the bottom of the garden. The house and patio allow space for restful living and dining, inside and out. The games room upstairs offers an opportunity for children and teenagers to enjoy their own company.

Lovely family holiday cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Despite storm Brian (!) and inclement weather we had a great stay at Westerley. The cottage was the perfect size for 5 of us (+ 1 dog), and the kids loved the attic room. Very cosy coming in from a windy and rainy day out walking to the log burner and a glass of wine. Everything was provided and lots of thoughtful details made the stay very comfortable. Its a prime location for visiting the north and the south of the county. Stunning part of Wales, dramatic coastline and lots of wildlife. There was a seal on the beach when we were there, which was 100m from our doorstep! Maisy the dog loved Newgale beach, the food at the Swan Inn Little Haven was delicious and the beach at Barafundle Bay is a must visit.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week visiting the local area and beaches made even better by returning to a fantastic cottage to relax after a busy day , the cottage offers so much more than just accommodation , nice touches and thought behind extra requirements for your holiday i.e. a selection of wellies in the garage.

We would certainly recommend this cottage and the surrounding area is beautiful, made even better by a great beaches minutes from the cottage.

Looking forward to returning one week soon.

There are so many outdoor activities to do: walking the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastal path and Preseli Hills; swimming at one of the many beaches; horse riding, zorbing and Segway at Nolton Stables just up the road; surfing, kayaking, coasteering, paddle boarding, kite surfing or kite boarding with tuition and equipment hire available at Big Blue Experience in Newgale; sea fishing from St Justinian’s and Dale or crabbing at Solva and Porth Clais. Nolton Haven is on the Sustrans Route 4 national cycle path from London to Fishguard and there are other challenging or gentle bike rides, some off-road in the area.

There are Pembrokeshire castles to visit – such as Pembroke, Carew and Manorbier. Britain’s smallest city, St David’s, with its ruined Bishop’s Palace and majestic cathedral, has lots of art galleries, pubs and cafes. Further afield is an Iron Age encampment and the Centre for Alternative Technology.

This area of Wales is superb for walking. The Pembrokeshire Coastal path runs unbroken for 186 miles and Westerly is just metres away from it. The flowers, particularly in May, are wonderful and there are sea birds, such as cormorants and gannets, unusual rock formations, ship wrecks, porpoises and puffins to see.

There is also excellent walking with wonderful panoramic views in the nearby Preseli Hills or Mountains to the north.

The No.400 Puffin Shuttle bus runs around the coast line from St David’s to Marloes with Nolton Haven half way round. This allows for a one way walk with the return journey by bus and avoids the need for a circular route.

The walks either way from Westerly, towards Newgale or Druidston Haven, are beautiful. You can use a mileage calculator to work out how far you plan to go.
