Moraira is a beautiful traditional Spanish fishing village around 20 minutes away, that has expanded to accommodate a relaxed tourist trade suitable for all ages. Locally there is something to do all year round, with traditional religious and local festivals at different times of year. There are so many wonderful sights to explore (lighthouses, caves, cathedrals) some fantastic walks, and sea excursions, also great for cycling and various other activities such as golf and tennis. A lively “cafe culture” means there is a relaxed but exciting atmosphere along the main beach front especially in the summer. Moraira is blessed with a wide selection of stylish cafés within its pleasant streets For authentic Spanish dishes why not visit Las Gaviotas in the square opposite the church. The main fish restaurants are located on the front overlooking the small port and fish market (La Lonja) where fish auctions take place every morning at 10am except Sundays. Well worth seeing.

A hire car is necessary due to the distances to the beaches and restaurants , and we would recommended travelling to visit some of the fascinating villages inland towards the mountains and some stunning secluded coves and beaches along the coast.

Javea is a 10 minute drive away and the Playa de l’Arenal is Javea’s most famous (but not only) tourist beach area, and well worth a visit. It is a dreamy setting stretching no more than 300m from the well located Parador hotel in the north as far as the famous Javea nightclub “Achill” in the south. The Arenal is home to every type of café bar and restaurant, which are set back from the wide promenade and beach. With views across the bay and a family chilled out atmosphere this is the perfect beach holiday get away. With fine golden sand, volleyball nets, various boutique shops and ice cream parlours stretching along the promenade, you can also find plenty of play areas for the kids. The fine sand leads down to the shallow Mediterranean waters making this a safe and exciting beach for all the family.

Denia lies some 15km north of Javea along a spectacular winding mountain road over the Montgo Mountain or a easy drive past the small towns of La Xara and Ondara. It is a bustling resort with a classic Spanish traditional old town, fine restaurants and blue flag beaches stretching for many kilometres, even in the height of summer finding a quite spot is always easy. The Marques de Campo is a lively street, lined with open air restaurants with a real world food theme serving everything from traditional rice and tapas as well as tastes from Germany, Holland and the UK. All these restaurants have adequate open air seating which makes for a meal with great atmosphere, with the added bonus of shading from the trees lining the avenue, many an hour can be spent watching the world go by. The surrounding streets are great for shopping, with plenty of boutiques and designer clothing outlets; Denia provides the best shopping between Valencia and Benidorm.

There is plenty for the kids to do if they get bored with the swimming pool and beaches. Less than 30 minutes away there are many attractions for all ages including ‘Terra Natura’ animal park, ‘Mundomar’ an animal water park, ‘Aqualandia’ a themed water park and ‘Terra Mitica’ a huge fun park, boasting some of the largest rides in Europe.

Golf

The Costa Blanca has many renowned golf courses of which 5 are less than half an hours drive away. Javea itself has 2 – the internationally renowned 27 – hole course at La Sella which is a 15 minute drive away, and 10 minutes away a local 9-hole course which is more difficult than it looks and has superb views of the ‘landmark’ Montgo mountain. There are further 9-hole courses at Moraira and Altea and the 18-hole Seve Ballesteros designed course at Oliva Nova Golf Club.

There are also very good courses at Benidorm, Valencia and Alicante, in particular the famous 18-hole championship links course at El Saler, for those who don’t mind an hour and half or so drive before the round.

A relaxing break from the hussle and bussle of daily routine.

First impressions.

We arrived late in the evening after a long day's travel and were disappointed that the promised welcome pack did not contain any food and we had to go to bed hungry. (We did however appreciate that the pack contained washing up cloths, liquids, dishwaher tablets and detergent for the washing machine). Having simply fallen into bed, the next morning we explored the accommodation which we found to be satisfactory. The property was clean and well maintained but a little dated in appearance, but that did not prevent us from enjoying our stay.

The garden was surrounded by trees which provided shade however they dropped a lot of needles onto the patio and into the pool. It was obvious that the pool had not been cleaned thoroughly nor had the patio been swept prior to us arriving. We cleaned both the pool and the patio area ourselves and even after 4 days and strong winds there was less detritus than when we arrived, which probably proves the point.

It is important to give a balanced view, so now the positives.

The property is situated in a quiet location and has everything one required for a relaxing holiday. The pool is a good size and the patio area is well planned with a very nice gazebo to sit and relax. We loved the BBQ area and the naya both of which were used every day and added to the overall experience. We took a tablet which we connected to the wifi and was put to good use to give background information regarding the area. We enjoyed Xabia/Javea both during the day time and evening visiting the beach, port and restaurant areas. We benefited from a week long Mulim/Christian celebration with different themed activities each evening.

As previously eluded to we did not eat out much preferring to BBQ by the pool and found the local supermarket adequate, however both Lidl and Aldi were only a few km away so we had plenty of choice. Also found the native wine was great for making Sangria (1 euro per bottle) and that a half decent Rioja could be bought for about 2-3 euro - a great bonus.

Although not one of our priorities when looking for holiday accommodation, we found the Sky TV a bonus on the only evening we ventured inside due to the weather.

Overall, good vacation enjoyed by us all.

Javea is the jewel on the northern Costa Blanca, it still functions as a fishing port with the boats leaving every day and returning with their catch. Alongside the rag tag fleet of fishing vessels can be found the multi million Euro yachts and family pleasure cruisers all moored in the famous port area below Puchol’s grand villas. Javea has 3 separate distinct stretches of coastline and is very much a lived in area which is popular with visitors and holiday villa seekers. Views across the bay are spectacular.

Playa de l’Arenal is Javea's most famous (but not only) tourist beach area. It is a dreamy setting stretching no more than 300m from the well located Parador hotel in the north as far as the bargain food restaurant of Scallops in the south. The Arenal is home to every type of café bar and restaurant which are set back from the wide promenade and beach, but not home to any of the hi rise blocks associated with Benidorm or Calpe. With views across the bay and a family chilled out atmosphere this is the perfect beach holiday get away. With fine, golden sand and amenities such as volleyball nets along the back of the beach which are popular later in the day and plenty play areas for the kids; this is safe and exciting for all the family

Scuba diving in Javea is highly recommended and there's no end of dive shops offering introductory dives and PADI courses, the bay in and around Portixol is a favourite amongst divers in the area.

The Costa Blanca has more than 13 golf courses including the championship La Sella course, on C/ Jesus Pobre. There are sailing opportunities available from the Javea port. There are a number of horse riding schools in and around Javea and excellent bike rides.

There are also some great walking routes around Javea and if you are interested in doing some walking you should ask in the Tourist Information office for the booklet 'Nature Parks and Trekking Routes'. A must do walk if you can cope with the heat during the summer months is to climb the Montgo, there are various routes to suit all fitness and age groups with the shortest being about 2 hours round trip, up to the 8 hr full traverse for those of a more adventurous bent.
