Magical holiday
We're just back from a magical holiday at The Olive Farm. Many precious memories were made for us and our young family and we're all in love with Greece. It was a pleasure to meet Charles, Ellie and Lexie and Patch and Tilly the dogs became extended family for the fortnight. The place has a wonderful energy and we just felt at home. We used the house as a base to explore the glorious South coastline and had a fabulous day in Olympia and many at the beach. Our most memorable day was when we caught an early ferry across to Kefalonia and hired a boat from the lovely George at George's Boats. A glorious day that we highly recommend. We most definitely will be back!

Idyllic home in heart of olive grove
Met by charming owners who showed us around a beautiful home. Large rooms well cared for and extremely well stocked; Everything you need is there for a completely relaxing vacation. Large kitchen and living room and extra large bath. Convenient to Olympus, the beach and Katakolon. Owner provides suggested day trips all of which were of great interest. Very clean and every attention to detail was met. Great communication and everything as promised and better.

Olive farm stay
We really enjoyed our stay at the olive farm. It was exactly as we expected, and clean and very well equipped. Charles, Eleanor and Lexi (and their menagerie) were very welcoming as hosts, and extremely forthcoming with help and information, without ever being intrusive. A splendid, if slightly remote, location - the ancient sites of Olympia and Messini are within striking distance, and there are fantastic beaches nearby. There's also the bonus of constant butterfly visitors to the verandah! We would definitely recommend this property.

Superb hideaway
We spent 3 weeks at the Olive Farm, which is the perfect place to enjoy real peace and quiet - unless you mind bees humming, chickens cackling or crickets chirring. It was the kind of holiday when my wife and I were 'all on our own' as much as we wanted, but were still able to rely on help and advice from the very friendly and likeable owners when this was needed. The owners live 50 yards from the property, but this did not spoil the feel of 'being on our own' in lovely Greek nature. The property is spaceous, well-maintained and provides plenty of books (books galore and many DvDs), but also various board & card games. The front garden below the veranda offers many flowers - a real treat to the eyes. The location is ideal for both the typical beach holiday and for tours into the mountains: it is only a few minutes by car to the long, sandy coastline, where we saw only very few people (in fact, our next 'beach neighbours' were 200 or 300 yards away from us, so we felt like having our own private beach). In the mountains, we did fascinating day trips to waterfalls, canyons, and monasteries - the owners gave us brilliant tips on where to go and what to see and there is also a folder in the property with details about each trip. In a nutshell, it was just the kind of holiday we had dreamt of and we are already planning to return to this romantic place. We want to thank the owners, Eleanore and Charles, for their hospitality and kindness and do hope to see them again next summer! Marianne & Adalbert, Germany P.S.: When our rental car had a flat tyre and we had no equipment on board to change wheels, Charles came in no time - yes, on a Sunday! - to Zacharo, where we were stranded, and got us out of this calamity. This was just gallant, 'Sir Charles', we will always owe you! :-)

'My family and other animals'
If you've read the book by Gerald Durell you can live the reality. The Hoilden-White family are delightful, The house is comfortable with lots of atmosphere and great views set in an unspoilt part of Greece within easy reach of a wonderful beach.

About the host

We left the UK about 20 years ago, and spent the next few years travelling Europe, looking for somewhere to put down roots. By 2002 it was clear that Greece was the place for us, and we have been here ever since.

Why they chose this property

We spent several years wandering around Europe, looking for the perfect spot. Once we narrowed our search to Greece, we then spent several years travelling all around the mainland, and several of the islands, trying to find exactly the right spot for us. Once we narrowed it down to the area around Kato Samiko, we spent months walking around the area, along the beach, up the mountains, around the lake etc, hunting out places for sale. All the while, we had a running joke about the perfect olive grove that we passed continually, but knew we could never buy, as it couldn't possibly be for sale. It had fabulous views, stone-built terraces, ancient olive trees, was close to the village but not in the village, and was in all ways exactly what we knew we wanted, but could never have. Owing to some rather strange luck, we now own exactly this piece of land, and we have no intention of ever leaving. For us, The Olive Farm is perfect, in every way.

What makes this property unique

What is special about The Olive Farm is actually the olive trees themselves - we have young slim trees of 20 years, big well-established trees of 100 years, and right outside the house is a huge, gnarled, gigantic tree of unknowable age. The house is squeezed in amongst them, giving you a wonderful sense of seclusion and privacy, whilst still having the ability to sit on the veranda and watch the sun set behind the island of Zakynthos, across the bay. The vast beach, the mountains behind the house, the forest, the village across the valley all help, but it is the olive trees and terraces that make this place so special. And this is what all our guests tell us too, so there must be something to it.
