Overview

About the property

4 en-suite bedrooms, 360 degree views including the sea and White Mountains

A spacious, stylish country house of 225 sq.m, in a totally private setting surrounded by its own 2 acre olive grove hill and evergreen orange plantations, not overlooked by anybody, offering 360 degree panoramic views including the sea and the White Mountains. Pleasant 1.5 km walk to Platanias' renowned sandy beach along a quiet country lane popular with walkers and cyclists. Within easy reach by car of some of Crete's most beautiful sandy beaches.

Guests staying at The Olive House can also get away from the summer beach crowds as they are invited to use our own private beach (a short drive down the coast, see photos) and facilities (sun beds, showers, kayaks).

Accommodation includes a large kitchen/family room with dining table and sofa, spacious living and dining rooms, laundry/utility room and 4 en-suite bedrooms (3 with large double beds +1 with standard double), all with great sea views. All bedrooms have windows and french doors, beds with luxury mattresses, individual thermostats for heating and cooling, built-in wardrobes, electric black out blinds, ceiling fans and adjoining bathrooms with spacious showers and heated anti-fog mirrors. En-suite bathrooms are provided with hairdryers, bathrobes, towels and luxury toiletries. The large laundry/utility room has a washing machine, separate dryer, a washbasin for hand washing and a ceiling-hung clothes drying rack. Kitchen appliances include top of the line Miele equipment, electric orange juicer, Nespresso coffee machine and a wide Fisher Paykel fridge freezer with built-in ice maker. Other amenities include 2 satellite TVs (one with a 5.1 surround sound system) 2 Apple TVs, a CD player, 2 DVD players and a Bose iPod dock and stereo speaker system.

Original paintings hang on most walls and there is an upright piano in the hallway bellow. The main verandah has a teak dining table suitable for 8 and a sofa / armchair / stone coffee table corner which offer a great place to enjoy the panoramic views.

Outside, there are landscaped terraces and stone decks with paths through flower beds of indigenous aromatic plants and herbs surrounding the house. A heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi finished in Pebbletec and natural rocks are inspired by the fresh water pools found in the gorges of the White Mountains and create a feeling of being close to nature. The stone decks surrounding the pool area remain cool even in the August mid day heat, for barefoot comfort. The wide stone kitchen window ledge extends out to the pool area to form a breakfast/drinks bar. The tall stools underneath make this an ideal place to to enjoy a drink or two and also allows dishes and drinks to be passed through conveniently.

Sunbeds and a table and chair setting for 8 are located on the pool deck underneath a shady pergola, with magnificent views all round. A BBQ area is provided near by.

Two free standing hammocks can be moved to shady or sunny spots on the deck, according to preference.

At the top of the drive, close to the main entrance of the house, are two wide, shaded, private parking spaces.

4 bicycles are available for use by our guests.

About Mike and Lucy

We are a well traveled couple who divide their time between the UK and Crete. We have lived in Greece, the UK, France, Monaco, Australia and Texas. We have two grown up daughters who live in Singapore and Australia. Lucy is an accomplished painter who has exhibited in many countries and Mike is a consultant in the energy industry. We have been coming to Crete since the early '70s and we love the island and its people. We enjoy painting, sailing, hiking, looking after our olive trees and making high quality olive oil.

We will respect your privacy but will make ourselves available should you need any help or advice.

Mike and Lucy purchased this villa in 2014

Why Mike and Lucy chose Platanias

This is a newly built house. It was designed by Critiland Architects to our requirements, as our base on Crete and a place where we and our daughters can meet to enjoy our time on the island. We make it available to guests when we are not there.

What makes this villa unique

The setting is tranquil and relaxing, with stunning views, perfect for yoga and meditation, but for those who want to stay connected there is high speed wifi. Although we do not see or hear them, we are located just a few minutes away from the restaurants, clubs and bars of Platanias and a pleasant walk (or very short drive) to its renowned beach.

beautiful, comfortable, helpful hosts, exceeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the house which was beautiful, functional and comfortable with stunning views and lovely grounds. The location was perfect for us- quiet but with easy access to Chania and a range of interesting sights. The kitchen was by far the best equipped we have ever stayed in but we didn't use it as much as expected because there were so many good tavernas around including the nearest, the atmospheric Drakiana. Michael was exceptionally welcoming, kind and helpful and the excellent (and up to date) information provided enabled us to enjoy much more of the area than would have otherwise been possible in the two weeks. Many many thanks and hopefully we can return before long

great location, complete comfort

  • 5 of 5

The villa was exactly as shown in the pictures, so pleased with our stay there. Plenty of room to have your own space, little verandahs to find shade and peace. Swimming pool was great.....no chemicals!! Hill was a work out which just burned more calories on our walks. We used the bicycles that the owner kindly left for us. Felt at home from the first moment we arrived and were shown around by the welcoming homeowners. Well designed and highly efficient villa. The views and sunsets are just incredible. Definitely one to remember!

A stunning house, beautifully designed. Contains all mod cons including a Nespresso machine! Breath taking 360 views and completely secluded. A short drive to supermarkets, beach and restaurants makes its' position perfect.

Wonderful villa

The Olive House in real life was better than appears in the photographs. Stunning views, peaceful location but still close to amenities, very well appointed villa and wonderful hosts.

Can't wait to return!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing property! All the modern conveniences you could ask for in a peaceful, secluded setting. But still convenient to Platanias and a quick hop onto the highway and you're in Chania in about 20 minutes.

Mike and Lucy went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay - from local recommendations to supplying the house with all the basics and welcoming us with Greek yoghurt, a loaf of bread, fruits & vegetables and their own olive oil from the property...the hospitality never ended.

Thank you for everything! We loved our first time on Crete and you made us feel so welcomed. We can't wait to return!!

Car: recommended

The seafront village of Platanias is 1.5 km away, and has numerous bars, restaurants, night clubs and shops, as well as a long sandy beach, where the caretta-caretta loggerhead sea turtles come to lay their eggs during the May to August nesting season. It is a pleasant 20 min walk along a quiet country lane from the property, or a 5 minute drive. The main town of Chania is about 15 km away and offers many attractions, including its beautiful venetian port and rich history. The beautiful beaches of western Crete Falasarna, Balos, and Elafonisos are easily reached by car. A number of boat excursions are available locally to the venetian fort on the island of Gramvoussa and to the near-by island of Thodorou, a conservation area for the protection of the wild native long horned Kri-Kri goats. There are lots of wonderful walks with splendid views along the fertile river valley and surrounding hills, starting right from the house. Taverna Drakiana, on the river bank, in the shade of tall plane trees is just 500m away and a "must visit" place where the owners Manolis and Theresa can provide a wealth of information and advice about the local area. Further along the same road is the very picturesque old church of Agios Giorgis Methystis set under carob trees and bougainvilleas. Further on is the lake of Agia, with its surrounding board walk and lakeside cafes, a splendid bird watching area, a pleasant cycle ride from the house. For a break from the coast, the majestic White Mountains (with peaks reaching 2,500m) can be seen from the house and can be easily reached by car for a day's drive. The road passes through the mountain plain of Omalos, which is the starting point for the magnificent Samarian gorge running all the way down to the wild south coast of Crete. A shorter but equally wonderful gorge is that of Aghia Eirini, further to the west. The southern coastal towns of Palaiochora and Sougia can be reached from Omalos and provide a starting point for exploring the most remote, unspoiled and picturesque beaches on Crete.
