About this property

3 bedroomed house in beautiful arcaded square

Our house is located in a pretty arcaded square in the beautiful village of Saint-Clar, backing onto the old 14th century town wall. The ground floor is open-plan, leading to a split-level outdoor terrace. It comprises a lounge area (including wi-fi , TV and dvd player) dining area for up to eight and a modern kitchen equipped with hob, microwave, oven, fridge, dishwasher. On the first floor there is a double bedroom, twin bedroom and bathroom. The second double bedroom (the studio) is reached across the terrace. It has an en suite shower, utility area with freezer and washing machine. There is an additional w.c. on the upper terrace level. Underneath the terrace we have a large under-croft area with table tennis table. The capacious south-facing terrace has stunning views across the Arratz valley and beyond to the rolling countryside of the Gers.

Saint-Clar is a lively village, one of the’ Bastide’ towns in south-west France and unique in having two historic arcaded squares. It has all the amenities, including a weekly market, two artisan bakeries, a butcher, chemist, newsagent, a bar, restaurant and 2 pizzerias all within walking distance. An excellent large swimming lake with flumes and restaurant is a 5 minute drive from the house.

The village lies in the heart of the Gascony countryside, with many nearby gourmet restaurants, historic towns, beautiful landscapes – on a clear day you can see the white peaks of the Pyrenees – and good walks. The well-preverved cathedral town of Lectoure, a key location on one of the pilgrim routes (Routes St Jacques) to Santiago de la Compostela, is a short drive away.

Toulouse - 1 hour away, Auch - 40 minutes, Agen – 40 minutes. Andorra and the Pyrenees are not much more than 2 hours away.
Nearest airport - Toulouse. Bergerac, Bordeaux, Carcassonne and Tarbe-Lourdes airports all with easy reach.

Time in the sun
Absolutely fine. Had everything needed for a holiday. Plenty of towels - useful if only taking hand luggage.

Gem of a place

a clean, ancient house in a lovely, quiet villaage
The house was spacious enough for our family of 6 adults . The characterful rooms are large as is the outside terrace overlooking the hills. We thought we would miss having a garden, but we didn't. There is a path just round the corner which circles the village, and for further exploration, we used the bikes in the garage. We loved having two bakeries and a few other little shops and a post office nearby. Swimming in the nearby lake was perfect in the hot weather, and the tour (Saturday and Sunday afternoons only) of the chateau at Avezan is excellent, especially if you understand French or can bring a friend to translate

Gorgeous, homely and in the middle of a village
A comfortable gite which felt like a home. Well equipped kitchen. Lots of space for eating and sitting inside and out. Three large bedrooms, one of which is more separate and self-contained. We enjoyed the books. Good internet. Great views. Cool and airy even in mid-30 degree heat. Use of bicycles was a bonus. House was very clean when we arrived and we were made very welcome by the owner's agent. The owner has been helpful throughout. St Clar is a beautiful bastide village, but with two bakeries, a butcher, a weekly market and a supermarket. The gite is in the old village centre. Lectoure and Fleurance worth visiting. We would love to come back and will recommend to friends.

About the host

We had been on several great holidays in the past with our family and friends and have been surprised that Gascony is not better known. It is much less touristy than the Dordogne but still with big landscapes of rolling countryside, picturesque villages and wonderful food.
We are both academics, semi-retired, but still working on projects. We have lived in various towns in the UK and are now in Southampton.

Why they chose this property

We were attracted to no. 26 as we liked the idea of being in a bustling village rather than a remote place in the countryside. St Clar itself is close to a variety of airports - also an important consideration for a holiday destination. Although a car is essential to get here, we don’t require it for any of our basic needs - food, newspapers, chemist etc.

What makes this property unique

Each time we come we discover new things. There are big towns nearby –Toulouse, Auch, Agen - for a bit of culture, and no shortage of picturesque villages and towns such as Lectoure, on the famous Route Saint-Jacques. We can enjoy the daily ritual of walking to the baker for our bread for breakfast and start the day on the terrace as the sun rises. We can go for longer walks straight from the house. We converted it for us and our family but wish to let it out when we can’t be here.
