About the property

Historic castle with 10th century tower close to Girona and Costa Brava beaches

Enjoy your own private castle with the very best of the Costa Brava and Girona at your doorstep! Castel Celra has an intimate, inviting atmosphere and laid-back way of living perfectly suited to travelers wanting to spark their imagination with a sense of place and contact with locals.

This is a quiet part of the world that, for the most part, has not succumbed to major development. While there is plenty to do, you can still unwind and relax.

Castel Celra is adjacent to a pristine lush nature reserve yet walking distance to an authentic Catalan village and only 8km to the beautiful, medieval walled city of Girona and some of the area's top destinations for extraordinary food and wine.

Award-winning, family-friendly beaches, gorgeous Mediterranean coastline with hidden coves (think the Côte d'Azur at a fraction of the price), and Spain's #1 rated golf course with Stadium layout are 30mins away.

Listed as a Spanish and Catalan historic monument dating from the 10th-century, the unique architectural elements of the castle's original structure have been beautifully blended with a relaxed, contemporary aesthetic tailored for your comfort and enjoyment. The castle is a self-catering, private luxury retreat with all modern amenities and is attractively decorated with comfortable, original furnishings and art. The property is unique in that, while self-catering, we have a local English-speaking host to help your group settle in, answer questions, and provide insider tips for go-to places and the very best of the area. Professional gourmet cook also available.

Property Highlights: completely private yet only 10mins to Girona and 30mins to the coast's prettiest beaches; circular medieval stone tower's sweeping panoramic view to the Pyrenees; Wi-Fi throughout; private pool with bar and lounge area; well-stocked kitchen with updated appliances and induction cooktop; large terrace and dining areas perfect for entertaining; stocked wine cellar; beautiful and comfortable decor feels local.

Architectural Features: 10th-century circular tower squared by 14th-century original stone walls; wood-beamed and stone vault ceilings; round arch doorways and windows; medieval courting seats; castle arrow loop windows.

Located in Spain's region of Catalonia, midway between Barcelona and the French border, Castel Celra is 10mins to Girona and 30mins to the most picturesque and unspoiled part of the Mediterranean's Costa Brava, with small secluded coves fringed with golden sand beaches, clear turquoise water, and traditional fishing villages. Castel Celra provides a peaceful and intimate haven convenient to everything this inspiring and spectacular part of Spain has to offer.

Bookings are for a ONE WEEK MINIMUM stay May through October and the maximum occupancy is 14 guests. Children are welcome.

The castle cannot be booked on a room-by-room basis. The rental fee reflects the price of booking the ENTIRE property. You don't share the castle with anyone else during your stay.

We look forward to hosting you here in Catalonia.

About William Holley

A tea drinking Brit living in southern California with his wonderful wife, Eskie dog and 2 fluffy cats.

William Holley purchased this castle in 2000

Why William Holley chose Celrà

We discovered and fell in love with the castle during our honeymoon in Spain. The property had been sitting there for "officially" 1000 years. The outer square walls were built in the 14th-century while the original round keep had been on the site since 900. From the air it forms a circle within a square and has a completely unique look and feel: even though it's a large property it feels cozy and intimate. The castle was renovated by a Catalan architect from Barcelona and is a listed historical monument...it captured our hearts and imagination!

What makes this castle unique

You get a feeling of immense calm when entering the ancient building and the area is so beautiful and peaceful; the castle is adjacent to a nature reserve with rolling, wooded green hills and signposted hiking trails. During the night you often hear nightingales singing and star watching from the top of the 10th-century round keep is spectacular. During a full moon wild boar come out at night in the fields directly below the castel and we love to watch them from the top of the tower, too.

We always feel inspired when we're at the castle and the area's relaxed way of living reminds us to slow down and fully savor each day. It really is Slow Living and Slow Food at its absolute best!

We particularly love the castle's private and idyllic setting yet being so close to the medieval, picturesque small city of Girona (frequently named one of the loveliest towns in Spain) is a huge plus. Girona is a low-key, stylish gem and we love to wander thru Old Town and discover one-of-a-kind boutiques and interesting, small museums. Trying a new restaurant for lunch followed by a sweet treat at Rocambolesc Gelateria makes for a perfect day. And if we're feeling more adventurous it's only 30mins to the prettiest and most stunning beaches on the coast. Several of these small coastal resorts are still authentic fishing villages and some of our fave go-to spots for lunch. We love being conveniently located to everything.

The castle is 90mins north of the Catalan capital city of Barcelona with its vibrant modernist architecture and Gaudi masterpieces, 30mins to the Salvador Dali museum at Figueras, and less than one hour from the French border.

We often make the 45min drive to Collioure, an impossibly charming and romantic French seaside town, for lunch on the beach followed by a nib thru the excellent open-air market.

The castle still captures our imagination and we fall in love with the property and the area all over again each year!

Castel d'Escales - A Little Piece of Heaven!

Left on Aug 3, 2016 for a stay in Jul 2016

Castel d'Escales is a must vacation rental! The Castle has been lovingly restored, perfectly decorated, and filled with wonderful history. We were a group of 8. The castle is so spacious, we could easily lose anyone! The location was perfect to scoot to Girona for a fabulous dinner or shopping. Our group loved to cycle and couldn't be happier with the location to some great rides. The Castle has a lovely pool to cool off in or have a game of volleyball! William and Sheila provided us with buckets of information and travel guides prior to our stay and couldn't do enough for us to make our trip as easy as possible. Jools, the resident caretaker, chef and artist is a gem! Jools kindly saved us from starvationb y by providing us with some grocery essentials until the stores opened - Sunday at 4 PM not a great day to plan to shop!! Jools was always available for valuable information, restaurant reservations, and a nice chat! But best of all, she will spoil you with her amazing culinary talents! Finally, I must mention Bessie, Jools' sweet little dog. We all fell in love with her!! Hint - bring Jools some Maple Syrup!! you'll be a star!

Castel Celra is in a peaceful, rural location yet only 8 km from the medieval, picturesque small city of Girona - frequently named one of the loveliest towns in Spain - and 30mins to the Costa Brava's best golden-sand beaches, idyllic secluded coves, and authentic fishing villages.

This is a quiet part of the world that, for the most part, has not succumbed to major development. While there is plenty to do, you can still unwind and relax.

Named "one of Europe's best hidden beaches" the pristine sandy bay and crystalline turquoise waters of Llafranc are only 33km from the castle.

The castle is 90mins north of the Catalan capital city of Barcelona with its vibrant modernist architecture and spectacular Gaudi masterpieces, 30mins to the world-famous Salvador Dali museum at Figueras, and less than one hour from the French border and the romantic, seaside village of Collioure.

Local Favourites: Historic botanical gardens perched on cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean with stunning views of the rugged coastline's hidden, small coves; archaeological Greco-Roman ruins at Empuries; the UNESCO World Heritage village of Besalù with its beautiful 12th-century Romanesque bridge.

We Love To: Wander thru Girona's medieval old town then refresh with a glass of cava and some tapas at a cafe on the Plaça Major; go beach hopping and watch the turquoise Mediterranean while savoring a simple yet flavorful lunch of caught-that-day fish; forage for fresh, intensely flavored local ingredients and other treasures at open-air markets; taste pure passion in a bottle at a family-owned winery steeped in ancient wine-making traditions dating from the 14th-century.

Celrà is an authentic working-class village walking distance to the castle with bakeries, butcher, fishmonger (fresh local meat and fish), small grocer, church, sports bar/tabac that serves good tapas, and a weekly open-air market on Friday. Each day of the week a different village or town throughout the area holds an open-air market and many are exceptional with a fine selection of almost everything you can imagine.

Girona's ancient, picturesque Old Town is enchanting with more than 1,000 years of architectural and cultural history mixed in with stylish one-of-a-kind boutiques, cafes, and museums. Its pedestrian-only, cobblestone streets are perfect for leisurely wandering and the Gothic Cathedral, Arab baths, and important medieval Jewish quarter are all definitely worth a visit. You can also walk around the 9th-century crenellated wall surrounding the historic center. The formerly fortified wall has withstood more than 30 sieges over 800 years and offers breathtaking views outside the city as well as views of a quiet garden and cloister tucked inside the fortress wall. It's the best place to be during sunset.

Extraordinary restaurants are only 15mins from the castle including two buzzy Girona destinations for foodies: the Roca brothers' El Celler de Can Roca, named Best Restaurant in the World 2015 and 2013, and Rocambolesc Gelateria, Jordi Roca's unique Willy Wonka-inspired ice cream shop.

Memorable Musts:

Try the hot ice cream-filled brioche bun or other adventurous sweet treat at Rocambolesc Gelateria.

Savor freshly caught seafood and shellfish, superb in its simplicity, at a restaurant that's nestled on the beach in a secluded cove.

Your English-speaking host is on hand to recommend the area's best restaurants and assist with making reservations.
