About the property

Secluded country cottage with king size bed, 2 covered terraces, pool, free wi f

For your holiday totally relax and unwind by choosing our beautifully appointed traditional character gite with home comforts, set within a secluded, yet wide open countryside setting, totally private and not overlooked. There is also a large pool with covered abri which you will have to yourselves (we do use it, but not when you are!)

Remember you do not have to book Saturday to Saturday which enables you to find the best value flights and ferries.

We are only forty minutes easy scenic drive from Bergerac airport, or, of course, an hour from Bordeaux's merignac airport. We are a stunning twenty minute drive from beautiful St Emilion.

We do not have multiple rental units!

We also try our very best to provide a comfortable, relaxing feel to make our guests immediately at home, having come from the city ourselves we know how wonderful it is is to be able to switch off straight away and breathe a sigh of relief!

You will have a triple aspect living room with a fully equipped kitchen, corner sofa, two sets of full sized patio doors and further window, television receiving English TV and a small dining table.

Each set of patio doors leads onto its own arbour covered patio with table and sun loungers with open and uninterrupted country views all around (the first thing you feel when you arrive is the wide open space around you and you are not overlooked by any other dwelling).

A hall lobby then leads to your generously sized bathroom with a large shower, WC and vanity basin unit. This is also where you will find the automatic washing machine.

Then to a lovely double aspect cottaged bedroom where the ceilings slope up high giving loads of character and where people say they sleep so well in the king sized bed with soft smooth bed linens. Obviously a wardrobe, chest of drawers bed side tables, lamps and blanket chest. Two sets of windows. Hair drier, bedside fans and room fan. You only have to ask if here is anything else you want, do not hesitate.

The pool is available to you at all times and you will swim looking out onto the tranquil country scene, hearing the buzzards, kites and kestrels wheeling overhead.

We can help you source pretty much any services or activities you would like, from golf at the stunning St Emmilionais golf course just eight miles away (rated 7th best course in the whole of France) through to massage or pedicures come to you, wine tours and gourmet experiences, we have no less than seven Michelin starred restaurants within half an hours drive, as well as many many more wonderful and amazingly well priced restaurants we can recommend if you would like. We can lend you bikes and some golf equipment can be made available.

All in all we have tried to create the kind of place we would love to stay, to get away from it all, to feel the space around us, to enjoy the unique French quality of life, but yet to be easily accessible from two airports which offer budget flights and to be able to strike out in any direction and explore this amazing, romantic, traditional and wonderful part of France. We would love you to come. You will, we hope, love it as much as we do and go back feeling you are more relaxed than you have ever been before!

If you are thinking of coming for two weeks or more make sure to ask us for a little discount!

Also, if you wanted me to do a shop for you and put it away in the cupboards and fridge ready for your arrival I can do so ( it will be a little bit extra depending upon how much shopping you want).

Many kitchen incidentals are provided for you so you dont have to worry about bringing those boring things you have to think a over for self catering stays, like salt and pepper, vinegars, oils, herbs, sugar, tee towels, washing up liquids, cling film, foil, loo rolls, etc etc etc. You have several different ways to make coffee just how you like it and we leave you coffee beans and electric coffee grinder too.

Please remember, we prefer any day but Saturday for you to arrive and depart, but of course we can usually accommodate Saturdays if that is your preferred day,

About Carolyn Cardwell

Steve and I moved to France to live full time in January 2013. We had lived in Kingston, south west London for over 30 years and had our holiday home at Lacanau ocean for ten years before finally taking the plunge to move here permanently. Needless to say we have not regretted it and love the peace, the space around us, the clear bright sparkling air, the climate, the lovely people, the fascinating culture and history, the reverence for wine and respect for good healthy food, the sense of community and rhythm of life, the seasonal round of special events, i could go on and on!

Carolyn Cardwell purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Carolyn Cardwell chose Montpeyroux

We chose this spot because we found a house which had the open spacious feel around it, the wide open country all round. We also specially wanted to be between Bordeaux and Bergerac because the two airports give such easy access with such affordable rates to fly to and from the UK.

What makes this cottage unique

The seclusion and privacy, away from it all!

The space and open natural country views all around you,

The easy access, two airports to choose from and good road and transport links.

Walks and cycling straight from the house,

Surrounded by prestigious wine lands of Bordeaux, St Emilion, Bergerac.

Walking, cycling or gentle country tours by car

Walk or ride to our nearby leisure lakes with bar restaurants open in season.

Great climate with sunshine (not absolutely guaranteed of course)

Big pool pretty much to yourselves

Adults only

No multiple rental units

Since we are in classic French wine lands, and since we have done our own "essential" research over the years, we can put together for the gite a little "cellar" of our favorite wines from local vineyards. They are all priced and you are welcome to choose and enjoy. Please let us know you would be interested in this before you come if possible If you have any request we will do our utmost! We can advise you or keep a low profile whichever you like! I can provide you with a starter pack of groceries at reasonable cost if you are short on time or don't want to shop.

Wonderful gite in a fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a week at Carolyn and Steve's brilliant gite. The gite has everything you could need, and the view from the patio is simply stunning, especially in the evening when you can watch a perfect sunset with a glass of local wine.

Carolyn and Steve are the perfect hosts, and nothing was too much trouble, they even took the time to book a restaurant for us, which given our appalling French was probably wise!

There is plenty to see and do on a cloudy day, and loads of excellent local restaurants. Hopefully we can return in the not too distant future!

A Lovely Week

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a week's rest in the Perigord Dordogne area after over 7 weeks of travelling. We were lucky enough to find Carolyn & Steve's lovely gite which proved to be exactly what we wanted.

From the moment we enquired (which was last minute) to the moment we left, Carolyn and Steve were the perfect hosts; there to help when needed but discrete when not .

The gite itself is very comfortable and more than spacious enough for a couple. The bed is super comfortable and everything is sparkling clean and beautifully presented. It is well equipped with all that is needed for cooking or just lazing around with added touches such as coffee, tea, milk and so forth to get one started.

Although mid October, we were blessed with delightful weather so after forraying locally, afar or not at all, sitting at the end of the day under the pergola overlooking the field and into the sunset with a little cheese and a glass of wine was just perfect.

A great end to our trip and thanks again to Carolyn and Steve who helped make it so.

Everything we needed, and more

  • 5 of 5

We have to say that Carolyn and Steve haven't missed a trick in this gîte. From the warm welcome we received on our arrival, to the most minute detail, like spare razors, a sewing kit and eye masks, our every need was catered for. The peaceful surroundings, the glorious sunsets, and the comfortable accommodation all helped to make this an excellent week in the beautiful French countryside.

This gorgeous gite is just fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned home after a 2 week stay(June) and had the most wonderful and relaxing holiday ever. We loved the peace and tranquility of Gite Eleanor - it really is in a stunning location with beautiful countryside views all around and totally private. It was a lovely surprise when we arrived.... absolutely idyllic. Wished we could have stayed for the whole summer!

Carolyn & Steve are so welcoming and friendly. They gave us privacy but help when we needed it....nothing was too much trouble.

Gite Eleanor is very attractive, homely and well equipped. There are lots of lovely little touches all around......which just adds to the very high standard. The kingsize bed is very comfortable and we slept well....complete silence and darkness at night. Bliss!!!

We really enjoyed the lovely big swimming pool - especially as it was so hot during our stay. It was such a unique and fab experience being in the pool surrounded by tranquil countryside listening to birdsong!

The gite was a great place to explore the Dordoyne further without travelling too far - we visited Bordeaux, Bergerac, Eymet - lots of familiar voices, St. Emilion, and Sainte Foy La Grande.

Thank you again for a fabulous holiday. It was just perfect.

We would love to come back!

Best wishes

Elaine & Colin

Very nice stay in the Dordognes countryside

  • 4 of 5

We just spent 4 comfortable nights at this gite. Carolyn and Steve are great hosts and happy to share their local knowledge. The gite was attractive and comfortable. We enjoyed swimming in the pool, dinners on the patio while the sun was setting, and walking around the area. This is great place for relaxing. Grocery stores are at least 20 minutes away so be sure to shop before arriving. St. Emilion and Perrigeux are easy day trips.

We are set in the beautiful countryside on the Dordogne Gironde border, in the heart of the region of France which lives and breathes wine production. We are perfectly placed for the "Route de Vin" with vineyards and Chateaux all around, two even within walking distance. Bordeaux, St Emillion and Bergerac vineyards are all within easy reach mostly on quiet traffic free routes. We moved here seeking a place in the countryside where we could feel open space around us and that is what you will find when you come here! You will find us in the quieter end of the Dordogne where you will not fight with crowds of tourists but take a deep breath, calm down and completely relax. Our beautiful corner of south west France is steeped in history too from the 100 years war enactment at nearby Castillon de Bataille to the fact that the World War Two demarcation line crosses our road. We have a medieval chateaux in our village of Montpeyroux with its ancient church. We are fifteen minutes drive from Ste Foy La Grande an ancient town on the Dordogne river whose market was voted the people's favorite in France, a true locals market but with so much to explore and discover.... maybe to bring home some wonderful samples of special local cuisine to sample. Sixteen miles quiet and idyllic drive through the vines you will find the stunning unesco world heritage site of St Emilion with its medieval walls, monolithic church built into the stone, bell tower and the Kings castle keep. Visited by wine lovers from all over the world. Here you can immerse yourself in all things vignoble, visiting vineyards producing premier grande cru classe, visit and tour underground cellars, even take a train tour around the vineyards. St Emilion also hosts a fantastic summer Jazz festival as well as other special open doors events all year round.

Our spot is so tranquil and off the beaten track yet you can easily strike out in any direction to explore pristine countryside, bastide towns and villages, larger historic cities such as Bordeaux, Bergerac and Periguex are an hour or less away, in fact you can drive to Velines, a little village 8 miles away, to take one of France's famously punctual train services, for instance, into the heart of Bordeaux which is a wonderful vibrant city to visit. Bordeaux also has a very easy to use (and cheap) park and ride service.

Closer to hand a perfect walk straight from the house would be to the Lac de Gurson, well, two lakes, one with two lake side bar restaurants, sandy beach, children's playground and little boats to hire. The other is just for fishing (if you would like to fish then permits are easily obtained locally).

Not forgetting the fact that there are so many restaurants to choose from ranging from set priced "menu de jour" which include up to four courses, often wine and coffee included, to grand Michelin starred establishments.

If you are a golfer this is a brilliant chance to play the newly established St Emillionais golf course nine miles away. It is a parklands course wonderfully set amongst the vines of St Emilion. Steve plays there and loves the course, he can even introduce you and play with you if you like!

You will find that many local events take place all year round in our region. For instance, a highlight of summer evenings would be a visit to a "marche nocturne" an evening market where tables are set out, often in the market place, local producers cook and you can shop around and buy your evening meal from different stalls. Great fun to chose from dishes such as local oysters, moules frites, faux filet, confit de canard, crepes, glaces, fresh bread and, of course, local wine producers offering you to taste, buy and drink. Maybe you may find you are here for a local "Fete Cantonale" where the town will be decorated with brightly colored flowers strung up across the streets and festivity including marching bands, carnival floats, stalls selling everything from food to crafts, bric a brac, artisans wood carving, glass engraving and pottery. The fete activities start in the morning continuing through until music, dancing and fireworks after dark.

Eleanor gite is adults only and we have a pool on site which you are invited to use any time you like.

This is the area where there is just so much to explore and enjoy or, if you prefer, do nothing at all!
