Stables Cottage is set in a very peaceful, rural area - within the old estate grounds of Galloway House, ancestral home of the Earls of Galloway.

It is 5 minutes walk to a safe, sandy beach, which is perfect for sandcastles, rockpools, beachcombing and safe swimming. The quiet estate grounds are ideal for walking, jogging and cycling, while the nearby coastal path offers wonderful unspoilt sea views.

For children, there is a huge, covered trampoline with safety net, while the large indoor playroom in the former grain loft offers table tennis, table football, skate-boarding and a climbing frame for toddlers.

There is a new, all-weather tennis court just beyond the cottage garden, complete with table and chairs for spectators. The new artificial grass surface makes it ideal for young children to learn on, while also being very kind to adult players with creaky knees!

We offer bikes for hire for all ages on an hourly or daily basis, so please check in advance if you don't want the trouble of bringing your own bikes. It's a great place for children to learn to ride.

We also have a fantastic kayak and dinghy sailing instructor based at the harbour, (within walking distance) for guests to use. All boats and equipment is available for hire.

Wigtown , Scotland's national Booktown is 10 minutes' drive with its famous bookshops, cafes and literary events.

The estate arboretum is within 5 minutes' walk of the cottage, while a number of famous botanical gardens, including Logan and Castle Kennedy are within easy driving distance.

There are numerous golf courses nearby, including the spectacular St Medans - perhaps Scotland's most beautiful 9-hole course - just 20 minutes' drive away. We can provide golf clubs if needed.

The cottage is within 5 miles of Whithorn, the site of Scotland's earliest Christian settlement, with its museum and visitor centre. Other historical sites include medieval churches and various standing stones and stone circles, built 4000 years ago.

The famous Kirroughtree mountain-biking centre is 30 minutes' drive from the cottage, with well-marked routes for all abilities. mountain bikes available to hire at the visitor centre.

There are some fantastic adventure playgrounds nearby, which make wonderful days out for families. Cream O Galloway ice-cream farm has everything from go-carting to indoor 3D mazes, while Laggan Outdoors offers more adventurous rides, such as a "Human Slingshot" and Europe's longest Zip Wire.

For quieter pursuits, the Galloway Hills offer wonderful hill-walking, while the nearby RSPB Reserve offers birdwatching for all ages.

Stables Cottage is a wonderful place for a family holiday if you like spending the days enjoying the great outdoors and spending the evenings sitting round a real fire.
