Colourful, three-bedroom, villa-like property with pool, near local amenities

Chez Marius is special – a colourful house in a luxury housing estate a stone’s throw from the heart Lourmarin. There are three bedrooms, opening out onto a garden with a lovely pool. At the bottom of the garden is a gate which will take you directly onto a path that leads to the edge of Lourmarin, making Chez Marius just three minutes walk away from this amazing village.

The interior decoration reflects Provence, with a colour palette reminiscent of Van Gogh, many of whose paintings were inspired by the flora of the area, with its brightly coloured lavender and sunflowers.

The ground floor is dominated by a spacious living area and a well-equipped kitchen – complete with a Gaudin cooker, microwave and washer/dryer – which opens to the extended outside dining area and cute garden. The terrace and 10×4.5ft pool can also be accessed from the living room, which has a television and wifi connectivity.

Up the winding staircase to the first floor, there are three vast bedrooms, one bathroom with bath, a separate shower with double sink, and two separate toilets.

If you like the social life of Lourmarin and love to sit at one of the cafés for your daily coffee and croissant, or glass of rosé, it’s just three minutes’ walk away, making this the perfect place to stay.

An ideal location with the best of both worlds

Chez Marius is a comfortable villa in a small upmarket housing estate on the edge of the beautiful village of Lourmarin. The estate is very quiet with a pretty countryside of trees and fields behind the house. There is a gate in the hedge accessing a track leading past the tennis courts to the main road. Here there is a pedestrian crossing with a small gravel lane on the opposite side which brings you into the heart of Lourmarin - and all within 5 minutes or so. Yet , when in the back garden and elsewhere in the house it is very peaceful with only the sound of the birds and the occasional whack of a ball coming from the tennis courts.. It is an ideal location with the best of both worlds, peaceful and away from it all, yet very close to village life. We enjoyed walking in for coffee, to shop and to dine at the many restaurants. There is a small superette in the square and a large Super U supermarket a ten minute drive away.

The villa itself is in good condition and very comfortable. We were two couples in our sixties and it suited us well. Having only one, very spacious, bathroom was not a problem, as there are two separates toilets, one with a washbasin.

We had a few small issues with the property, which is why I am awarding four stars and not the five which is deserves for its location.

There was no barbeque when we arrived, although it was listed on the Owners Direct site. There were no cushions on the wicker armchairs by the pool or on the wicker sunbeds, making them very uncomfortable. However once mentioned to Walter, the affable property manager, and to the owner when he called to welcome us, a very nice man who lives in an adjoining property, they were quickly provided.

There is also no shade at the moment around the pool and in the garden area. We never sat by the pool but pulled the sunbeds into the small amount of shade provided by some pretty cherry and olive trees instead. A few umbrellas here would make all the difference. Our overall impression was of a comfortable large property in which a lot of thought had been given to the needs of guests within the house, but not so much in the outdoor spaces which is where most guests, especially from North European Countries, wish to spend their time. However, this being the first review, I fully expect that will be rectified.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Chez Marius and Lourmarin and would definitely go back again to both..

Officially one of the 'Most beautiful Villages in France', Lourmarin is the “jewel in the crown” of the Luberon triangle. A very popular destination for tourists, there are lots of good shops, art galleries and restaurants set in the most charming ancient streets which are quite magnificent. Market day is Friday, and it is quite outstanding; just wander around and soak up the atmosphere. A marvellous 15th century chateau overlooks the town and hosts regular events and art exhibits. Celebrity residents include Henri Bosco and Albert Camus (who are both buried in the local cemetery), and author Peter Mayle, who penned the best-selling ‘A Year in Provence’ books.
