Mountain village house with spectacular views

Updated: 07-Sep-2016
2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4

Located in the old part of the medieval mountain village of Triora, this house has been completely renovated and refurnished to a very high standard, with no expense spared.

There are two balconies, one from the bedroom and the other from the living area. Both have breathtaking, uninterrupted views of the valley and Maritime Alps.

In 2004, Triora was rightfully included in the list of most beautiful Italian villages (Club dei Borghi Pui Belli d'Italia). There are only about 100 members. Located in the Maritime Alps, Triora is perfectly placed for those who enjoy walking or hiking. There are several well marked walks from the village itself. It is only a 40 minute drive to the seaside resort of Arma di Taggia on the Riviera dei Fiori (Riviera of Flowers). A further 10 to 15 minutes drive you can be in Monaco on the Cote d'Azur.

Special interest holidays: Triora is famous for being the home of witchcraft. In the 15th century some 30 witches were arrested, convicted of causing a local famine and burnt. There is a museum dedicated to the subject in the village. The village and surrounding area is extremely picturesque and is a haven for artists. There are several mountain walks in all directions, where you will find rare birds and fauna and mushrooms. (In September there is an annual Mushroom Festival.) It has several churches, all full of historically interesting paintings and other items. There are also many neighbouring villages with histories of their own to explore.

Getting there: There are two airports, the nearest Nice, about 1hr 30mins drive and Genoa about a 2hr drive away. Both airports are serviced by the budget airlines Easyjet and Ryanair. There is a regular train service from both Nice and Genoa to Arma di Taggia and a frequent bus service from Arma di Taggia to Triora. However, to explore and get the best from the area it is recommended that a car is required.

The house is in the centre of the village of Triora which is pedestrian as the medieval streets are too narrow for cars. Parking is free just outside the village and it is possible to unload things in a nearby market square. Please book on about owner to see guest reviews prior to 2016

Triora: There are three bars in Triora one trattoria providing excellent Italian and local cuisine. In addition there are several good restaurants within easy driving distance. The village also has a grocery store, fruit and vegetable shop, a bakery, baking its famous Triora bread, hairdressers, hardware and electrical shop, an excellent delicatessen and various gift shops. In the next village down the Argentine valley, Molini di Triora there is a pharmacy, cash point and several other shops. In the surrounding towns and villages you will find daily markets and various festivals throughout the summer.

Stunning views from a well-stocked, lovely house

  • 5 of 5

This is simply a wonderful house in a small mountain village that comes complete with everything you will ever need, don't worry about bringing tin openers or extra coat hangers...this house everything and more.

The real winner about this superb accommodation is of course the magnificent views from the 2 balconies, I promise you will never stay anywhere ever again with a view like this.

The panorama comes at a price though as the 45 minute drive up the mountain takes some adjusting to and will test your driving skills! However, you DO get used to it ( I went up and down 5 times during our week-long stay). The village is served by only one restaurant plus a further 2 small bars which also serves lighter meals, plus a 3rd at the entrance to the village. The restaurant has a limited menu (written only on a blackboard) but they will make subtle changes on request. Triora is worth exploring on foot as it is mostly pedestrianised and we enjoyed the steep climb up to the elevated cemetery from where you can actually LOOK DOWN on your holiday house and enjoy spectacular views. Explore too all the narrow, cobbled streets and try to spot the old bread ovens built into the walls. A 15 minute drive down the mountain to the next village, Molini di Triora, and you can relax by a lake with its cobbled stream. Take a picnic.

From our base in Triora, we took day trips to some lovely places in our hired car. We recommend day excursions to Dolceaqua and Apricale, two fabulous medieval villages close to each other but be mindful places of interest may not open (after siesta) until 3pm. Pieve di Teco is also worth a visit and a motorway drive to Monaco is a must. Allow an hour and a half to get anywhere though, its the price you pay for that mountain view!

The house owners, Mike and Pat were holidaying in Triora while we were there and it was fabulous chatting and picking their brains on local knowledge. We are so glad we chose this home (especially after the dated, rather unclean accommodation we were to stay in the following week, what a come down!),

In summary, I could quite happily live in this house. The town is quaint and welcoming and your holiday is one where you can either do little or run around a lot, like us, taking everything in. There is a small shop here which serves your basic needs, but for a larger shop you will need to drive down the mountain where we found a Lidl's. Overall, we loved it here and thoroughly recommend it. 5/5 rating.

Characterful, well equipped, comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

This property was an excellent base for exploring the Maritime alps and also the western Italian riviera. The house was comfortable, clean and very well equipped for cooking. Lots of home comforts, cosy lamps, books, games etc. The local walking guide was especially useful. The views from the balcony were stunning but need a head for heights. Carla was very welcoming and helpful on arrival. We loved our stay in Triora and enjoyed the walking, the beaches on the coast and visiting the mountain villages and trying the traditional food such as pasta made from chestnut flour, cheeses and bread. It was like going back in time. We would love to come back sometime and explore more of this beautiful region. Thank you to Mike and Pat for sharing this lovely property.

Fantastic place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a great holiday staying in this unique village. The house was very clean and had everything you could want. The views from the balcony are absolutely beautiful and we loved our evening walks around the village. The helicopter delivering roof timbers to a neighbouring house on our last morning was an unusual and exciting experience. Overall we would recommend this house and Triora to anyone. Thanks very much.

Superb House, Wonderful Village - Simply Perfect

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in the House and in Triora. We came back because both are so special. So much so, that Abi and I got engaged here this time.

We walked in and around Triora, we drove and enjoyed the coast (Imperia and Ospidaletti) and also had a cultural visit to Dolceacqua.

The restaurant L'Erba Gatta was excellent and we ate there 4 times.

The whole place is a proper Italian cultural experience in a House that is stunning with incredible views for the times you want to just chill and relax

I cannot recommend highly enough!!!

Incredible views!

  • 4 of 5

Triora is a hilltop village, a maze of winding passageways and tunnels that has to be seen to be believed! The house itself sits almost at the top, and has the most amazing views - we spent most evenings on the balcony ( you need a head for heights) just watching, and listening to the church bells from the villages across the valley. The house has been well-designed, and Mike and Pat have given a lot of thought into what their guests will need to self-cater so far into the hills. Travel light though, because as the village is pedestrianised it's a fair walk with your luggage through the passageways - we were much fitter by the end of the week! Truly worth it for the incredible views.

Nestling in an exceptionally beautiful corner of Italy, bordered by the Mediterranean, the Maritime and Ligurian Alps, Western Liguria - and more specifically the province of Imperia - stretching along and inland of the Riviera dei Fiori (Riviera of Flowers) offers a magical and breathtaking landscape with olive and vine-clad hillsides, densely wooded valleys interlaced with rivers and spectacular mountains rising to 2000 meters, beautiful and unspoiled countryside as well as the blue Mediterranean and award-winning clean beaches and coastline, this is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The countryside is dotted with fascinating medieval villages, some perched in stunning hillside locations - veritable mazes of narrow cobbled streets and small shady squares - a world where the pace of life is relaxed and traditions have changed little.

Golf: There are three golf courses within easy reach.

Castellaro Golf Resort, Circolo Golf degli Ulivi at San Remo approx 45 min drive.

Garlenda Golf Club. Between Alassio & Albenga approx 1hr 30min drive.

Ski: There two ski resorts about 1hr 30mins drive by car.

Limone Piemonte which combines three different ski areas and although offering skiing for all levels, is a paradise for intermediates. Monesi, a smaller resort offering challenging skiing just over the mountains behind Triora.
