Overview

About the property

Fabulous location: Fishing, boating, beaches, coves, walks, gardens. Lots to do.

Rock Cottage has stood alone on a promontory for over 400 years. It commands a stunning, peaceful and ever-changing view of the Helford River with its surrounding woodland in an area of outstanding natural beauty. With no neighbours or other properties in view, and bordering the water on two sides, one can enjoy complete privacy and tranquillity. The acre of terraced gardens lead to a woodland and the private foreshore, where 'Peggy', our sturdy rowing dinghy is moored.

This homely cottage has full central heating with radiators, three bedrooms including the separate Garden Room and comfortably accommodates a maximum of six persons only. It offers a new, light and modern kitchen/diner, fully equipped to high standards with all you need and the added bonus of a fabulous view! Relax in the refurbished, carpeted and most comfortable, beamed sitting room with its luxury sofa and arm chairs, cushioned window seats, wall lighting and the original large inglenook fireplace. Conveniently situated on the ground floor is the family bathroom. From the sitting room, a fine wooden staircase leads to the landing, master and children's bedroom all having beautiful pitch pine floors with large rugs. A couple of paces across the slate courtyard is the spacious third bedroom. All rooms enjoy lovely views of the garden, woodland, surrounding countryside and the Mawgan Creek.

Upon arrival, you will find this exceptional property beautifully presented, very clean, with easy to use facilities and everything in its place. The internet service is fast, reliable and included in the rent. Rock Cottage is personally prepared by us, the Owners, Linda and Robin, who live in Mawgan.

From early springtime the grass banks and woodland come alive with thousands of Cornish primroses, spotted orchids and English bluebells. Daffodils grace borders and pots. You can always find somewhere to sit or look at a different aspect from the terraced garden which is well tended, planted with camelias, hydrangeas, and other shrubs. When autumn approaches, the beech and oak woodlands reveal another splendour.

Children find lots to do here and enjoy a game of swing ball, playing hide and seek in our woodland, crab fishing with a line and bacon from the jetty or racing their toy sail boats along the shore.

For those who love to be on the water, bring your kayaks and canoes. Launch these from our jetty and explore the tidal creeks. Some guests enjoy fishing for Grey Mullet, Sea Bass and flat fish either from the shore, or out in 'Peggy'. She is available (weather and tides permitting) from Easter until the end of October for our guests to experience an adventure on the upper reaches of the Helford River.

Rock Cottage has an excellent location for visiting many places on the Lizard Peninsula. Family holidays, special occasions, anniversaries or a couple wanting to escape from the daily routine, choose this haven.

"Memorable, relaxing, so comfortable, everything in its place, very clean and well-appointed with great attention to detail, just perfect ..... simply a wonderful holiday," what our guests say and can expect when they stay at Rock Cottage.

About Linda Dandy

Hello from Linda Dandy. In 1999 Robin and I 'upped sticks' and moved to Mawgan with our two children, who were youngsters at the time. We are fortunate to live only five minutes away from Rock Cottage and are dedicated to looking after all our guests and providing them with a first class service and of course fully maintaining the property. For me, it is a real privilege to assist with the managing of Rock Cottage which has been in the Dandy Family for over 60 years. On a holiday to the area in 1954, Rock Cottage was ‘discovered’ by Robin's parents, Eleanor (Peggy) and Leslie Dandy. They immediately recognised the special nature of this 16th century cottage and its unique location, which stands alone within an acre of land bordering the Helford River on two sides. Later that year the property was purchased at auction for their retirement.

Linda Dandy purchased this cottage in 1954

Why Linda Dandy chose Lizard Peninsula

At the time of purchase, the cottage was condemned as unfit for human habitation and was also Grade II listed because it was then the ‘only recorded example of a traditional Cornish cottage built on a projecting rock foundation’. There was no mains water or electricity, so rainwater was collected for washing and oil lamps and candles provided the only illumination. Drinking water was collected from a nearby spring. A comprehensive renovation programme took place and this was completed by January 1956. The main building was demolished to ground floor ceiling level except for the chimney end which was preserved. The traditional cob (mud, straw and stone) walls retained where it was possible. A Bathroom was created from the old Scullery, the Sitting Room extended and a new Kitchen constructed.

The Garden Room was formerly a separate cottage and had been altered in the early 1900s to become a Meeting Room for game shooting for the Trelowarren Estate. Both families living in the cottages’ had shared the semi-detached privy with their own pathway to it. This building has been preserved and still exists at the bottom of the garden. It must have been quite tricky to keep a candle lit in order to see where you were going! An 1876 map also shows a boathouse and the original two stone walls of this still remain.

The objective of the renovations was to modernise the cottage but still retain its character and originality as much as possible. We believe this has been achieved and many guests think so too. It is a superb waterside retreat and there is nowhere quite like it!

What makes this cottage unique

Rock Cottage is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with very convenient and easy access to many of the local amenities. However, it retains a tranquil and idyllic outlook. The Dandy Family are pleased to share the wonders of the Mawgan Creek and the peaceful atmosphere of Rock Cottage with you where a sincere and friendly welcome beckons.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It is worth travelling across the Atlantic to enjoy this magical place, where the family, including grandchildren, and friends wear 24 hour smiles. Thank you Robin & Linda for making your cottage available to us all once more. Affectionately Joyce & John. Mexico City

Had a brilliant relaxing time at Rock Cottage. The setting is wonderful and the cottage has all you could want ... and more. Will recommend here to all our friends. Thank you for all the welcoming touches. Susan & Dave, Ayrshire.

I've had a great week here and I have enjoyed rowing in Peggy and crab fishing off the jetty. (I caught 10 but they all escaped). I have also enjoyed just relaxing and my bed was so comfortable. Thank you so much. Jessica, St Albans (aged 15)

Rock On ! ( Cottage )

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Rock Cottage but something tells me it won’t be our last.

The cottage itself is picturesque set in a stunning location, immaculately furnished and very comfortable, the pictures truly do not do it justice. The fresh flowers Linda arranged throughout were lovely as were the treats laid out in the kitchen – what a welcome!

The garden is well established and wraps around the whole cottage which means if the sun is shining you will always find a sunny spot at any time of day. All sorts of wildlife visit including Dave the friendly robin and Mr and Mrs Pheasant looking for breakfast, lunch or an evening meal! The most spectacular thing about this cottage is the view of the creek and walking down to the jetty to find Peggy waiting for you to row off and have some fun (tides permitting of course). Hubby also launched his windsurfer from the jetty and although a bit tamer than the sea he could leave the windsurfer safe and sound every day without having to rig each time. We ate out on the patio each evening, even if it rained, having taken a table top heater and gazebo – we really couldn’t waste those views.

The Ship Inn is only a ten minute walk away, the new owners have only been there 12 weeks but have already established the restaurant with fabulous food – best to book in advance. Be warned the pub is closed Sunday evening and all day Monday.

Local attractions that we enjoyed, The Lizard, Coverack, Helford Village, Gunwalloe beach and Cadgwith Cove, a beautiful fishing village where we bought fish for our supper.

We have had a fantastic holiday and thanks to Linda and Robin for being so friendly and making our stay memorable.

Fabulous Cottage with Amazing Views

  • 5 of 5

This is the 7th time we have stayed at Rock Cottage so you can tell we are fans!!! We never tire of the fabulous views from the garden. The cottage is always clean and bright on arrival and the Welcome Pack is great. If you want night life then this is not for you but if you love sitting in local pubs overlooking the estuary, walking your dogs on the cliff paths and enjoying the peace, quiet and bird song then Rock Cottage is the place for you. Although peaceful it is not isolated and the local village has a great pub and an excellent shop.

Beautiful character cottage in a truly lovely location with a fabulous river view.

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed a recent short break in Cornwall to celebrate my 50th birthday. I chose Rock Cottage because I loved the sound of being right on the river with its ever-changing views. I really enjoyed sitting in the garden watching all the bird life - it's an amazing place! We would love to return one day to make use of the rowing boat at the property - we couldn't take it out this time because it's only available from Easter, due to the tides.

Linda, the owner, welcomed us to the cottage, and there were really lovely touches such as fresh flowers, cake/biscuits, and a pint of milk in the fridge. The cottage was beautifully clean too. All-in-all, a lovely base from which to explore The Lizard (or even stay put to enjoy the view.

Owner's Response: I am delighted to receive this splendid review, and thank you Sarah very much! It was a pleasure to meet you and your family, and I was so pleased to hear that everyone loved their stay at Rock Cottage. Good to know the boys enjoyed body boarding at nearby Poldhu Cove, even though the water temperature is a bit on the chilly side. It would be lovely to see you all again as you were really appreciative guests. Linda

Beautiful cottage in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is located in an idyllic position on the river bank of the stunning Mawgan Creek. The quality of the accommodation is of the highest order and it was spotlessly clean. There was also a complimentary welcome pack that was very much appreciated. The owner Linda, couldn't have been more helpful and gave us useful information about the local amenities. The area itself is beautiful and we would most definitely recommend that you explore the Lizard Peninsula as there are some fantastic walks on offer. If you are looking to visit an unspoilt, friendly and relaxing location, you won't go wrong in choosing Rock Cottage. We will definitely return!

Cosy, comfortable cottage with beautiful views.

  • 5 of 5

Description and photographs gave a good idea of what to expect but level of cleanliness and neat/efficient organisation of equipment exceeded expectations. Made to feel welcome and all questions dealt with. Views wonderful and tide timetable provided to work out when to go out rowing. Played it safe allowing 2 hours either side of high tide. Beds comfortable but note children's room beds are narrow. Garden is on slope but picnic bench and extra chairs and BBQ on flat patio. Games, jigsaws, books, videos and CDs nice touch. Good base for exploring Lizard Peninsular and Lands End. Lovely beach nearby at Church Cove.

Owner's Response: We are delighted to receive this review from a lovely family who, despite the long hours of travelling, arrived with happy smiling faces. It is good to know you found everything to your satisfaction. Rather than bunk beds in the children's room, as mentioned in the details, the two beds in this room, are 2'6" wide but the standard length of course. Glad to learn you enjoyed the beach and of course your outings in Peggy. Thank you for taking a holiday at Rock Cottage and also for leaving everything clean and tidy on your departure. You will always be welcome here.
