About the property

Very comfortable, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms. Sleeps 2- 8 plus 2 cots

Sorry - our website is being updated and therefore currently unavailable but here's the information you need to know about our house.

Le Bourg is a characterful and charming stone-built family house (circa 1850), situated in the centre of Castanet with magnificent oak beams, exposed stonework, alarmed swimming pool and solar powered pool shower. Secured area for bikes.

Castanet is an ancient and friendly hamlet, with many beautiful old stone houses and virtually no through traffic. Situated close to medieval towns such as Villefranche, Cordes sur Ciel and Najac, the house provides peace and tranquillity, and an excellent base for exploring the region. Inside, the house divides neatly into 2, giving families their own space, and is decorated in a comfortable mix of antique and modern. The attractive farmhouse-style kitchen is well equipped and includes a dishwasher and microwave. The basement has a new modern shower-room and a utility room with 'drinks fridge' and washing machine. Free Wi-Fi . Own laptop required.

Baby equipment: stairgates, 2 cots, 2 h/chairs, baths, monitor, steriliser, changing mats.

Getting here and away : Castanet is about a day's drive (10-11 hrs) from Calais or just 1.5 hours from Toulouse International airport where there are several flights per day from Gatwick, Luton and Heathrow. In addition, there are flights to Rodez and Carcassonne with Ryanair. On a wider perspective, the location is central to the Pyrénées, the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, all of which make for an interesting day away.

History and wine : This area is renowned for its “bastide'' towns and villages. Of these, Najac and Cordes sur Ciel are perhaps the best known as they are wonderful examples of living medieval, hill-top fortifications and date from the 13th century. Cordes, for example, was founded by Raymond, Count of Toulouse during the violent years of the Cathar Wars and Albigensian Crusades. Today, the walls and houses of both Cordes sur Ciel and Najac stand in their entirety, having been painstakingly restored by the artisans and artists who now live and work there. Wine connoisseurs can investigate the local vineyards of Gaillac (starting 25 minutes to the south) and Cahors (1 hour to the north), Languedoc (2.5 hours to the south) or the relatively unknown Marcillac to the northeast near Rodez. The area is also home to many restaurateurs who can guide you on your choice of good wine.

Albi, a UNESCO site is 50kms to the south.

Eating, drinking and entertainment : Monteils, (3kms) has a boulangerie, grocers and 3 good restaurants. The pretty bastide town of Villefranche de Rouergue (20 minutes) will meet all your shopping needs (hypermarkets, tabacs, newsagents, banks, post office, boulangerie/patisseries, boucherie, sports shops and several bars/restaurants). Villefranche is also host to a comprehensive programme of entertainment as well as a large, lively market on Thursdays.

The lovely towns of Najac and St Antonin Noble Val are only 20 minutes away and have very colourful markets on Sunday. There are several fêtes, spectacles, music festivals and general entertainments taking place in Cordes sur Ciel and the surrounding villages. Family entertainment is also available 40 minutes away at the Cap Découverte theme park including swimming pool, karting, dry-slope skiing and tobogganing, skating, rollerblading, cycling and a museum of the old mines and local history. Open-air swimming pools are available in Najac and Villefranche.

de très belles vacances ensoleillées, au calme

  • 5 of 5

Anna and her family from Belgium

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful stay in this house with my family ( children , baby and dog ) . The house , in the center of Castanet is beautifully renovated and decorated. With 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms , a large kitchen and living room, everyone has enough privacy .

Baby loved the rocking chair ! Beautiful nature and villages as Najac and Cordes-sur-Ciel . I would recommend the house to everyone who's looking for beauty and tranquility !

Le Bourg , Castanet

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful relaxing holiday in this well located property. A real getaway in an idyllic and picturesque part of France. There are many beautiful bastide towns within an hour's drive and a variety of markets to explore.Pauline and Ian were very helpful hosts. I had a "tooth episode" which required a dentist and Pauline kindly organised an appointment for me and accompanied me on the day. Prompt replies to emails allowed for ease of communication. A quaint, spacious property with outside dining and a much needed pool, an opportunity to experience French life. We would definitely recommend this property for a family vacation.

A lovely spot in a friendly little village.

  • 4 of 5

The house is a perfect mix of new and old features and is very welcoming. We felt very relaxed and at home in the house as soon as we arrived.

Pauline and Ian were on hand when we arrived to show us around and give us some good tips on local places. They were also kind enough to recommend a local restaurant for Sunday lunch in Najac - it was excellent.

We were 4 people and a dog so we had plenty of space in the house. As mentioned, the house is ideal for 2 families or groups as they layout splits very easily into 2. The recently built walk in shower down stairs is an excellent addition.

The garden and pool and were both lovely although we only braved the water a few times. A few degrees warmer and it would have been perfect. The house is also nicely positioned to watch the locals playing boules in the evening!!

We spent the majority of our time visiting the lovely bastide towns around. Najac, Cordes and Villefranche on Market day are all excellent. A couple of us even ventured as far as Roquefort for the cheese.

All in all an excellent house in a good location with plenty to see and do.

Superb holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a wonderful couple of weeks in Castanet. We were met by the owners, Pauline and Ian, on arrival who were very helpful and pleasant.

The property is in a very quiet village and therefore there is a reasonable drive to acquire supplies. However there is a baker and a small shop in the next village which was very handy! It was a great escape from the hustle and bustle.

The rooms were spacious, the beds comfortable and fans were provided which were very much appreciated with the high temperatures. The kitchen had everything we needed. The property was very clean throughout.

We spent loads of time outside in the pool. This was a fantastic addition to the house. Many hours of fun were had by everyone!

Pauline was extremely efficient at replying to any emails sent and both she and Ian were very happy to chat over the phone. Through the two weeks if we had any requests or needed any advice about the area they were both very happy to help which we really appreciated.

I cannot recommend this property highly enough. The drive from Rodez was easy and took around about an hour. A brilliant holiday....thank you so much Pauline and Ian!

French rural idlyll

  • 5 of 5

My wife and family enjoyed a very relaxing and comfortable stay at LeBourg for 2 weeks in August 2011. It is situated in Castanet which is everyone's idea of a quiet and pretty French rural village complete with many beautiful and rather ancient stone houses, a square for boules, regular ringing of the church bell to mark the time and frequent sounds of farm animals including cock crowing. The village is set in lush Bastide country and walks above the village are rewarded with stunning views of expansive countryside. LeBourg is a beautifully restored and refurbished combination of 2 adjacent buildings. It works very well and can easily accomodate up to 9 people. Being remote we were glad that there is a good internet connection to keep in touch with the outside world if you must. A car is essential to get provisions from the nearest village with shops at Monteills (3 Kms) or Villefranche et Rougeret (12 kms), which has a spectacular market on Thursdays and several super markets, as well as lots of other excellent shops and restaurants. We were grateful to Ian and Pauline for their clear instructions on how to get to LeBourg from Toulouse and their helpful book on various aspects of amenities at the house and tourist material about places of interest to visit. We enjoyed Cahors, Najac and Cord sur Ciel as well as Villefranche et Rougeret. It was a pleasure to stay in the very comfortable house which is immaculately maintained. We loved the pool and barbeque area in a beautifully shaded garden, where we spent most evenings.

For us it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and one of our best holidays. We have travelled in France on various occasions before and had hoped to experience the delights of rural France, but never quite managed it. This year thanks to our stay at LeBourg we found it. I can thoroughly recommend time out at LeBourg

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were delighted that the house was so well-equipped, especially with all the baby equipment. Sarah loved it and was so relaxed she even fell asleep once in the pool, head-down on her swimming ring!!!

We loved the area and enjoyed day-trips to Najac, Cordes (3 times!), Villefranche and Toulouse. The local restaurant in Monteils 'O berge de l'assou' was actually very convenient for us because the food was pretty good, it was reasonable and they were very good with the little one.

We have every intention of returning to Castanet

Castanet is an easy 1.5 hour drive from Toulouse (BA from Heathrow, Air France from Heathrow and Birmingham, Jet2 from Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle, and EasyJet from Gatwick) or 1 hour from Rodez with its Ryan Air service from Stansted and Dublin. Alternatively, it is a very easy drive from Calais via the A20 with autoroute practically all the way.

The village is well located for exploring and enjoying this very pretty part of South West France, particularly the Aveyron and Tarn Gorges and the many Bastide towns. Cordes sur Ciel, voted the French's favourite village in 2014, with its summer festivals, concerts and Saturday market is 25 minutes away. Albi the with its Toulouse Lautrec museum, shops and massive cathedral is 45 minutes drive, and Gaillac and Cahors, the regional wine centres, 45 minutes. The fabulous Millau Bridge is about 1.5-2 hours drive along the beautiful Tarn valley.

Other Activities: Canoeing (organised or individual) - great fun!!!

Golf: There is a 9 hole golf course at Villefranche de Rouergue but golfing enthusiasts would be better to go to Albi where there is a superb top quality course. The non golfers among the party could happily spend several hours in Albi (a recent Unesco Heritage site) visiting the cathedral, Toulouse Lautrec museum, taking a river trip or simply shopping and lunching.
