1 Double bedroom with queen size bed, a twin bedroom and 2 bunk beds in an alcove on the landing.

Kitchen equipped with washing machine, dishwasher, oven, micro-wave and family size fridge.

The cottage is within 30 metres of a shared heated pool 12m x 8m, a restaurant and bar.

Domaine Les Granges

Domaine Les Granges, arguably the premier gite and leisure destination in France, situated in gentle Cognac country in the heart of the Charente Maritime, overlooking the medieval town of St Jean d’Angély across the banks of the River Boutonne.

On-site facilities include a fitness centre, swimming pools, paddling pool area for children, 2 squash courts and mini tennis court, games room and a children’s play area nearby.

Those seeking a more relaxing holiday can take advantage of our other facilities, followed by a drink at our bar and on Saturday a dinner at our own on-site restaurant (restaurant open July and August).

The cottages have been refurbished. Fully equipped kitchens including washing machine, dishwasher, micro-wave and full oven. All the facilities on site are included in the rental price, except bicycle hire. Domaine Les Granges is ideally situated, within easy walking distance of a lake for fishing, pedaloes, the river and the town of St Jean D'Angely. A traditional french market every Wednesday and Saturday and many bars and restaurants. We recommend a visit to a cognac estate and the museum at Cognac.

The countryside is dotted with picturesque villages and along the banks of the river Charente, Port d' Envaux, St Savinien offer boat hire, water skiing and lovely walks and bike rides.

We stayed in Domaine les Granges for 2 weeks in July 2015- 2 adults and 3 kids (8, 6 and 5}. Overall we enjoyed the stay but feel that our experience at the end needs to be recorded so that other potential visitors are aware of some potential pitfalls.

The accommodation is fine albeit very sparsely furnished e.g. We had to ask for basic bbq tools, there were minimal amounts of crockery, cutlery and glassware - we bought some of our own (chopping boards, sharp knives etc).

Our main issue arose after we left when received a brief email from the owners accusing us of leaving the house in poor condition including a stain on the couch which they said was bike grease. We had never let our bikes near the house much less near the sofa. They also said that we had stained "all the mattresses", a claim which the owners withdrew after we had pointed out that we had brought and put on our own mattress protectors in addition to the ones they had on the beds as a matter of total precaution.

There were other vague claims (microwave and fridge needed cleaning) which they withdrew when challenged but still kept our deposit.

Their argument essentially was that in the fine print of the contract (which you are asked to sign on arrival when you are probably totally frazzled after a long car journey in the heat) gives them total discretion in terms of what to do with your deposit. They also said that when visited over the course of our stay that they noticed the floor was sandy but this was never mentioned to us when they had a chance to do so

It's not that we had a bad relaionship with the owners. In fact over the course of our stay we would have spoken to them regularly e.g. when we saw a mouse in the cottage (it's a rural area so they advised it happens a bit). We didn't make an issue of it but we got some traps from the owners.

We also had an incident where my bike and my wife's bike were damaged when 4 teenagers who had been drinking in the adjoining car park broke in and damaged the pool and our bikes.

They threw our kids bike onto the road and it was then stolen. We paid for the repair to our own bikes ourselves and split the cost with the owners of the bike that was stolen and replaced it ourselves on our own time.

All the time we were entirely reasonable in our dealings with them.

Before we left to travel back, we interacted with the cleaning staff who made no complaint at all. We have never experienced any issue previously in any other location

Owner's Response: Our first complaint in 4 years. More than 6000 people have stayed with us since we arrived at DLG and all the comments have been so great - there has to be a first. I could write pages about the 3 children, the state of the house, but I see nothing to be gained. In 4 years we have with-held deposits 4 times and always after careful consideration and discussion with our staff. We take photos of the problems which we send to the guest. Our T&C's state that clients must leave their cottages as they find them - clean, spotlessly clean. We allow 3 hours per cottage to clean and make the beds - if the staff take 6 hours and we have to replace a sofa cover, re-paint walls, we must cover our expenses and make the point. As all our regular guests will know, we are quite humane!
