3 bed/3 bath villa in village near yoga retreats and surfing beaches at Canggu
VILLA TUKAD was built in 2004 as a unique private villa in a very special location on the edge of a village, next to a river and rice fields. The location is perfect for those seeking a taste of local Balinese culture without having to brave the traffic and noise of the main tourist sites. The villa is a mix of traditional Balinese, other Asian and Moorish elements, together with some western comforts. The rapidly expanding but still relaxed tourist area of Canggu and Batu Bolong Beach are close by, providing informal eating and drinking, and beaches for surfing. Unlike many purpose built holiday villas in Bali, Villa Tukad is very spacious and lovingly furnished by the owners, a retired English professor and his wife who use this as their home for part of the year. The spacious accommodation comprises three stylish bedroom suites (one in a self-contained guest house), large reception, office and an attic/TV room. The villa contains a wealth of artefacts and antiques. The veranda with dining table and day bed, overlooks secluded pool and spectacular tropical gardens. The garden extends down to the river and contains 2 pavilions. There are water features, stone carvings and shrines, and an infinity pool (10 X 4 metres) surrounded by palms, giant ferns, orchids and bougainvillea. In an unspoilt village location with local temples, the villa is only 10 mins from Batu Bolong (Canggu beach), with local restaurants catering for all possible needs from burgers to raw food, from French to Japanese, as well as Indonesian and Thai. It is 40 mins from the more up-market restaurants and shops of Seminyak.

Satisfied customers: Villa Tukad has been wowing guests from all over the world since 2004. The guest book and 5 star reviews show that guests are especially happy with the location, amazing atmosphere, the pool and gardens and especially the staff. Our full-time cook has a reportoire of Western and Asian dishes and is used to cooking for special diets.
See reviews for guest comments.
Our guests come from the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Italy and the US - the staff speak English, and manage to communicate with guests from most countries.
TWO-CENTRED HOLIDAY: Visitors to Bali who would like to see more of the island might like to consider combining a stay at this villa with our WOODEN LAKESIDE VILLA in Bedugul - www.homeaway.co.uk/85226. As well as golf, there are other outdoor pursuits in Bedugul to take advantage of the cool, fresh air, such as trekking in the rain forest, and visiting remote temples and volcanoes. You can also use this property as a base for exploring North Bali.
The two properties are very different and although they are only one hour's drive apart, the climate in Bedugul is much cooler.
If you are interested in GOLF, then the two villas combine to give you close access to two of the most picturesque golf courses in Asia. The Nirwana (managed by Le Meridien) is at Tanah Lot. The Pancasari Country Club is a spectacular course in the crater of a volcano adjacent to property no 85226.
If you want to split your holiday between several villas, we can offer advice on where to go, and provide transport to and from our properties.
Please note that Villa Tukad and the Bedugul property are NON-PROFIT MAKING ventures. All rental proceeds go to the staff, the village, the government and local suppliers.

Why Paul Smethurst chose Tabanan Regency
Villa Tukad is far enough from the bustle of Bali's tourist resorts to provide a real experience of life in a Balinese village. Although the property is in a village, it is very secluded with high walls containing the fabulous gardens. It has all the luxuries and much more space than most holiday villas, and these are the reasons we chose it as our retirement home. The property comes with the best staff you could hope for, and they have been with us for 12 years now. There are now dozens of restaurants, shops and sites within a short drive, so for us it is in the perfect position, secluded, connected with 'real' Bali, but not too far from tourist Bali when we want to a night out or some retail therapy.
What makes this villa unique
Guests and friends who have stayed at Villa Tukad remind us how special the place is. Unlike the sometimes soulless and ubiquitous 'luxury tropical villas' all over Asia, this was built with love and care, not to a price. Villa Tukad affects people and many keep coming back. One guest from Australia has been 5 times now, and says he is addicted to the charm and the atmosphere of the place. Another unique benefit is our star cook Desak, who is able to conjure western and Asian dishes with consummate ease. The other staff are also loyal, charming and utterly trustworthy.
As well as sharing our home, you are also close to one of the best new tourist areas at Canggu, which doesn't (yet) suffer from the taint of overly touristy and over-developed Kuta. Canggu is still small-scale, has organic markets, yoga and wellness centres and surfing.

My wife and I, our son, his wife and their two children ages 6 and 9 spent a remarkable week in March of 2016 in this stunning villa!!! The pool, gardens and villa are 5 star!!! The staff were very helpful, welcoming, friendly, amazing cooks, and smiling all of the time!!! We had a hired driver the full time so many adventures were explored from going to beaches, zoo, shopping, dining out, sight seeing, temple touring, water park and so much more!!! The pictures on VRBO dont tell the beauty of the villa.....it's spectacular...the art work and beautiful gardens are lovely! We enjoyed massages in the privacy of our villa!!! We would definitely give this place a gold medal and recommend it to everyone!! We hope to return!!!!!
We just spend a week at Villa Tukad and what a wonderful time we had. The villa itself is big and spacious, beautifully maintained inside and out. The gardens are speculator and a lovely pool. The staff were amazing and nothing was to hard or too much trouble. We had great customer service from the owner with communication and ease of booking. The food was brilliant, just order off the selection of in-house menu the day before and the staff will do the shopping and prepare the meal for a very small fee. It is about 15 mins from a great beach (Echo Beach) and we decided to rent motor scooters to get there and back each day. The staff can also organise a driver to do this. We had numerous massages which was an additional small fee ($10 each) at the villa as well. There were 6 adults and two children (8 &14) in our group. Thank you again for a wonderful place to call home for the week and I would highly recommend the villa.
A lovely first Bali experience
We arrived in April and my immediate thoughts when I saw the villa, were that I had not booked enough time there, we had only booked 5 nights and as the villa is so spectacular I would have liked more time. The gardens are fabulous and the rural location is very peaceful. The villa itself is very well suited to our needs, lots of areas to just relax and laze about. The pool is great and deeper than it looks, very refreshing. All the rooms were large and well maintained. The staff at the villa were all fabulous, korman cooked nice breakfast in the morning, Katut keeps the gardens clean, and Nopi keeps an eye out at night. Desak the cook, cooks the most wonderful meals using local produce. We just let Desak surprise us with our meals, and they were all scrumptious, but there is a menu to choose from too. Eating in the villa was very cost effective, and is restaurant quality, if not better!
The trip to Seminyak was not too long being 35 mins , and Ubud in about an hour. Our driver Roy was fantastic, very cheerful and chatty and always punctual. My bali experience at Villa Tukad has been very memorable and we will definitely be visiting again, for longer next time :)
We had a fantastic stay at the Villa Tukad, the house and the garden were excellent.
What makes this villa really special are the staff, from Budi picking you up from the airport, Koman making breakfast and the wonderful Desak making lunch and dinner.
This is all done at cost, you agree what you'd like to eat, give Desak some funds she keeps an account book with all the receipts, she then buys and cooks the food as little or as much as you want.
My partner is Indonesian and thought the food was so good we took some home (specially prepared by Desak)
This is the best kept secret of the villa!
The villa is in a rural location and we did debated if we should stay in a similar location to where we have in the past or to try somewhere new. We were so pleased that we did, it was so peaceful and a taxi only costs £5 (60000 IRP) to Seminyak and the night life but you can leave it all behind and come back to the peace and quiet of the villa.
We very much liked that the villa is in a village and is in keeping with the other houses. It fits in and doesn't stand out like some of the other villas you'll see being built elsewhere in Bali.
We were also able to hold a birthday party for my 45th with some of our friend who live here and some who visiting. My partner along with Kiki the villa manager arranged food and drinks and extra staff and Kiki also bought a wonderful flower arrangement as a gift from the villa staff
The owner Paul was very helpful throughout our email communications and replies very quickly.
If you stay at the Villa Tukad you will have a great time, highly recommended.

Thanks to the owner of the Villa Tukad
Dear Mr. Paul,
how time is flying by! It was on August 11th that we left Villa Tukad in
the early morning and now already 2 1/2 weeks have passed since. But we
don't wish to have left without having thanked you for the great
opportunity to rent your house. This really is a "treasure" you have
installed: the good taste for style concerning architecture and
furniture, the generous space, the refreshing garden, the vicinity of
traditional villages and ricefields.
Another very enriching aspect of our stay in Villa Tukad has been the
chance to meet the people of Bali, especially ones of such exquisit
character as the ones employed at the Villa.
Having met them every day, we felt deep communication and understanding.
It has been a pleasure to speak to them, as they gave us insights into
the Balinese mentality, life and thinking. This has been utterly moving
and interesting. With this experience we really got the feeling of being
in Bali. We are certain that after this stay we will never settle for a
hotel anymore in Bali, and coming back to Bali, Villa Tukad will
definitively be our first choice.
We had a great time, thank you very much for everything. Please give
our best wishes to Kiki, Desak and the other associates

As said in many of the previous reviews, the photos of this villa don't do it and it's beautiful gardens justice. It truly is a little piece of paradise.
We recently spent ten days here - myself and my husband (50s), son, daughter and boyfriend (all 20s) and all fell in love with the place.
It is not the place to come if you wish to spend a lot of time in the hustle and bustle of Kuta (yuck) but apart from that, it is perfect. We had a few day trips into Kuta (Waterbom Park etc). The journey is not abysmal but slightly tedious - wouldn't want to be doing it every day. However, the younger members of our party hired scooters at a very cheap price and had a ball coming and going on them. Taxis to take us to nearby Echo Beach were very cheap and even hiring Budi for the whole day is exceptional value compared to western standards. We found Budi very pleasant - a quiet fellow but knowlegdable when necessary - friendly but not 'in your face'.
The property itself was looked after magnificently by Koman, Desak and the unobtrusive gentlemen who were occasionally to be seen around the garden. Koman was always there early to cook breakfast for us and clean the villa (heaven), Desak did our shopping daily, getting anything that was required for lunch, dinner or the next day's breakfast. She then went on to cook us magnificent meals, with nothing being too much trouble - her spring rolls are to die for, by the way. Kiki checked in regularly to see that everything was going well. When little things popped up, she attended to them immediately and very efficiently and again nothing was too much trouble. She even offered to buy me some jewellery and post it to Australia when I admired some of hers on the last day. She wouldn't take any money upfront as she didn't know exactly how much the postage would be. I found this quite amazing but quite lovely - it just wouldn't happen in our neck of the woods where no-one trusts anyone else anymore.
I found the owner, Paul, very easy and pleasant to deal with. We exchanged several emails prior to our trip and he was exceptionally helpful in answering my little questions and offerring advice.
My husband and I spent a fair bit of time relaxing around the villa and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience. The gardens are spectacular and so tranquil - you hear a bit of the day-to-day village life going on around you but it's still very peaceful.
Would definitely recommend this property.

Activity and Interests
VILLA TUKAD is close to local beaches (Batu Bolong and Echo Beach) and a short drive from dozens of bars and restaurants including those at Canggu/Batu Bolong. Local restaurants have also opened recently offering Indonesian, Asian and Western food. Many other options for dining and designer shopping in Seminyak about 30 mins drive.
The villa is secluded with complete privacy and security. The veranda looks out over exclusive terraced tropical gardens dropping down to a river in a deep valley skirted by tall, exotic trees. There are many nearby bakeries, local shops and markets (10 mins) and western supermarkets (20 mins).
The staff can shop for all your food and drink requirements if you like. Echo Beach has cafe/restaurant and bar open all day, and seafood barbecue. Temples in the village have traditional music and ceremonies.
You can easily cycle to the local beaches (20-30 mins) or out into the the traditional villages and rice terraces. (Walking to the beach is not recommended). There is a golf, spa resort and sports club at Tanah Lot (15 min), and Ubud, the major cultural centre of Bali is 45 min by car across countryside.
Unlike many Bali villas, Villa Tukad is away from the main traffic bottlenecks of Seminyak, Legian and Kuta. It is easy to cycle, drive or walk from the villa through picturesque lanes.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: our full time villa manager and staff can help you to find local cultural activities, and can arrange MASSAGE and SPA TREATMENTS in the villa.
SURFING for beginners and experts can be arranged at Batu Bolong Beach and Echo Beach at Canggu (15 mins).
DIVING trips can be arranged at North and South Bali sites, and we can arrange DAY TOURS to any of the cultural sites in Bali, Safari Park etc., or onward travel to Lombok, Gilli Islands etc. The nearby Nirwana resort offers sports activities and a comprehensive spa - day or weekly membership can easily be obtained.
HORSE RIDING on the beach at Canggu is only ten minutes away.
If you are interested in learning to play the GAMALAN or in BALINESE cooking, we can arrange for someone to come to the villa.
For YOGA and PILATES, just ask the villa manager to arrange.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, note that Villa Tukad is a very special place. We have had WEDDINGS here, and many other occasions have been celebrated. Because it is so private and the gardens are so special, many guests have found this a very SPIRITUAL place and a place of HEALING.
Whatever your plans, make sure you spend at least one full day doing nothing but relaxing by the pool, gardens, verandah, and let the staff look after you, or send them away and have it all to yourself!
CRAFTS: you can see many local crafts in the villages - stone and wood carving, pottery, painting etc.
NIGHTLIFE, LIVE MUSIC, BARS and DISCO: you might be surprised how sophisticated the night life is in Bali. Its not Ibiza, but it has its share of vibrant contemporary places to check out. The beach roads of Seminyak, Legian and Kuta have a selection of nightspots, and there are less sophisticated live music venues on the beach at Canggu (10 mins).
GOLF: The Pan Pacific Nirwana golf club offers one of the best golf courses in Asia. Overlooking Tanah Lot temple and the Indian Ocean, this Greg Norman designed course is incredibly picturesque.
TEMPLES: Two of the most important temples in Bali are with an easy 20 minute drive: TANAH LOT is on a rocky promontory and often viewed at sunset. MENGWI temple is visited more by local people than by tourists, but it is the most important temple in the region and you will not be hassled by people trying to sell you things. There are some artists with studios near the temple, but this is not a major tourist site.
One of recommended drivers can take you on FULL DAY sightseeing tours, rates are inclusive of petrol, driver's food etc. You can visit anywhere in Bali from the villa in a ONE DAY tour, and be back in time for a lovely dinner cooked by our highly commended cook.
FOR A TWO CENTRE HOLIDAY, consider combining a week at Villa Tukad with one at our 3 bed/ 2 bath lakeside cabin in the mountains overlooking Lake Bratan (Bedugul). You will appreciate the fresh mountain air and the cooler temperatures for a change, and can use this as a base for exploring the many attractions of North Bali.

- The gardens deserve special mention as they contain two pavilions each large enough to contain three or four adults. They are positioned by a large koi fish pond, and by a stream that runs through the garden. These are perfect places to relax, read, snooze or have a Balinese massage. There are four recliners around the swimming pool, and a day bed on the veranda. Note that there are four staff who work at the villa. They are responsible for gardening, pool maintenance, cleaning, shopping, washing, ironing and cooking.
