The Perreal hill is an interesting walking area itself with its variety in forests and gypsum rock formations, great views on the surrounding valley and noteworthy geographical history. But you can also walk directly into the Luberon valley with its little villages and hamlets. Walking between vineyards, orchards, olive trees, and cypresses one can imagine why this region is often cited as the Toscane of the Provence.

The Parc Regional Naturel de Luberon is a nationally protected heritage site which features natural forests, cherry orchards, vineyards, old villages, castles and lavender fields. This blending of nature and man made history is unique, not only in France but also the rest of Europe.

Visitors adore the scenic and carefully preserved landscape under the warm southern sun of France, nestled between such impressive natural phenomena as Mont Ventoux and the deep naturally carved Gorges du Verdon.

The Luberon Mountain region offers visitors all forms of sights, serenity, activities and shopping, but as yet has not been overrun by the tourist industry.

Points of interest: The region is interspersed with cultural and historical attractions such as the thousand year old Church of Sainte Anne in nearby Apt, and the two thousand year old Pont Julien, an ancient Roman bridge which still spans the River Coulon.

Several hilltop villages are found throughout the area, and make interesting and memorable places to visit. Roussillon was a hiding spot for writer Samuel Beckett during the Second World War. Gordes features the Sénanque Abbey dating back to 1148.

The village of Ménerbes has been made famous through books and cinema, depicting a quiet rural French lifestyle. Lacoste, once home to the notorious Marquis de Sade, is a popular spot for history buffs. All of these towns offer shops, restaurants and other amenities, and can be reached in less then half an hours' drive.

The storied town of Avignon, which held the seat of the Papacy briefly in the Middle Ages, is within 45 minutes' drive offers an abundance of cultural and historical points of interest. There are 2 golf locations: one near the village of Saumane 45 minutes drive with 18 holes and the other golf club is in the village of Villar 10 minutes drive with 9 holes.

About Fam Franssen

Being ourselves lovers of nature, gardening, hiking, mountain biking, quietness, and relaxing, we take care that our guests enjoy a vacation without any stress in one of the most beautiful parts of France.

Why Fam Franssen chose Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt

Very beautiful landscaped gardens, shady and sunny areas. Astonishing views on Luberon valley, also known as Tuscany of the Provence. Large heated Pool. All in the middle of a beautiful varied natural surrounding with forests, small scale wineries, and orchards, dotted with pittoresque and lovely medieval villages

What makes this villa unique

Suitable for groups of couples and singles as well as families with children of all ages. Amazing views on valley. Extensive property, great for adventurous children, but also with lots of places to find quietness when wanted. Heated pool.

Trails for wandering, biking and hiking right form the entrance.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Eleven of us stayed here, including five children aged 2 to 9. We all had a fantastic time and would happily have stayed another week!

The owners were there when we arrived and couldn't have been more helpful.

The house and grounds are spacious and well cared for and the view is amazing!

The pool is a great size and there are plenty of loungers and seats for everyone. However the shallow end is not very shallow, even the nine year olds struggled to touch the bottom (it didn't seem to affect their enjoyment though) It's useful to have a fridge by the pool too. The trampoline and play area are right next to the pool which is handy for keeping an eye on the children.

All the bedrooms are light and spacious and have their own bathroom, although beware the mezzanine bed really isn't for little ones.

If you're with little ones then there isn't anything in walking distance, but it's only a few minutes in the car to Saint Saturnin (which is well worth a visit) or ten minutes into Apt with shops, cafes and the huge supermarket. There are loads of fantastic places to visit in this area of Provence (we've been three times now) and the house provides a really good base to explore.

The owners have provided two mountain bikes and I can totally recommend a sun-down bike ride along the quiet roads around the property - whatever your fitness level. Although you may have to walk the last bit up the very steep hill to the house.

If you're feeling more energetic my husband and his brother hired bikes and cycled to the top of Mont Ventoux....

There's also a small lake for fishing about five minutes away which my boys loved (take your own kit though).

All in all a great holiday, thanks Maria and Paul!

Helen, UK.

Beautiful comfortable villa in superb setting with stunning views.

  • 5 of 5

Because this villa is the owners home the level of equipment and furnishings exceeds normal holiday rentals. They have tried to provide everything to make for an easy and enjoyable stay. Their presence on site is reassuring but completely unobtrusive.

The house is cleverly designed with a covered terrace on the south side and bedrooms on the ground floor so that no sunlight enters the bedrooms and it is possible to keep the inside of the house really cool even on the hottest of days. The outdoor kitchen at the western end of the terrace provides an opportunity to take meals in complete shade while enjoying one of the best views in the Luberon. A very special venue to which you'll want to return.

Perfectly set up for a relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We could find no fault with this property which was so well equipped that there were two of most things. The house was spotlessly clean and had ample space for our family of 6. Paul and Maria were extremely helpful and couldn't have facilitated a better stay for us, their aim is for guests to enjoy themselves and we certainly did. My husband had to stay in touch with work and had no problems staying connected. The surrounding area is stunning and we made good use of the 2 bikes there to explore, particularly to Roussillon. There are many shops and restaurants in Apt, and 2 lovely bakeries and a couple of very good restaurants in St Saturnin. There is a peaceful walk up to the church and ancient settlement ruins on top of the Perreal hill straight from the house which we enjoyed. The listing is totally accurate and Paul and Maria are a pleasure to deal with.

Spacious villa with beautiful views

  • 4 of 5

A lovely villa with amazing views across the Luberon valley, it is well equipped and handy for the local village which has great restaurants, bakeries and a small grocery. This villa has something to offer for all ages, whether you want to relax on the terrace by the pool or burn up some energy on the trampoline. We particularly enjoyed the exploring the local walks straight from the gate out into woodland and past fields of vines to reach nearby villages for a coffee and croissant. The rooms are all very comfortable and clean, and the villa is very well equipped. The loft bedroom is fine for older children and teenagers (or in our case an adventurous adult) providing you don't mind a tall ladder to reach your bed! The owners are very friendly and helpful with lots of tips for local activities. Just one minor grumble was three are a few trip risks on the paving around the pool which means young children or older guests should be extra careful.

A lovely villa in the heart of Provence

  • 4 of 5

We spent two lovely weeks at the villa. We were a family group of 11 in total (7 adults, 4 children). The villa is really well laid out with four good sized bedrooms on the ground floor with ensuite bathrooms. There is a smaller bedroom upstairs which is best for older children (not adults), and it was really nice to have a big open plan living area also. We spent nearly all our time eating out on the ground floor terrace just looking out at the most amazing view across the valley. The garden is well kept and the pool is a really nice size , with the most awesome sunken trampoline just next to it. All the kids wanted to do was swim and jump. This made for a really relaxing holiday. The location of this villa is truly fantastic with so many beautiful villages and towns to visit nearby. We will have to come back as there is still so much more for us to see and do, and we need more of that view.

Wonderful house and pool

  • 4 of 5

For the perfect Provence holiday this house is hard to beat. Fabulous views, and one of the best pools I have ever swum in. The pool has several well covered areas for pale English skins. Garden is wonderful with scent of lavender everywhere, plenty of space, plenty of shade. Four wonderful bedrooms en suite, but fifth bedroom not really useable unless you have an older child who doesn't mind sleeping in a loft space. The owner's response to small niggles quick and effective. Would certainly recommend. Location is perfect -- more or less 45 minutes from just about anywhere you wish to go.
