Capanna, Castellare

The Capanna is a small independent house, of about 55 square meters. It looks like a little fairy tale home, completely surrounded by nature, and a favourite spot for the deers.

This house has been restructured trying to maintain it's out-of-time essence, so the walls, outside and inside, have been kept original, in stone. The Capanna house has one bedroom for two, a bathroom, and a living room with a kitchen, a livingroom and a dining area. The sofa opens into a double bed if needed.

There is a fireplace that is nice to have on for extra loveliness on Autumn evenings.

About the property

Castellare is an ancient building complex on the high hills that surround Florence (just 20km away). It is set on top of a private hill, invisible from the public street, and completely surrounded by nature.

We offer four accommodations, warm and inspiring, and a swimming pool is in the main lawn.

The Stalla is our larger accommodation and is displayed on two floors. Upstairs two spacious bedrooms (a double and a triple) and a bathroom; downstairs a big open space with a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable livingroom area. The Stalla house is perfect for a family or a small group of friends. In restructuring it we tried to maintain its rustic and antique charme, so you will find an original stone floor and family pieces of furniture. Outside the livingroom door there is a private garden with table and chairs of wood.

The Loggia has an independent kitchen with a pretty view, a livingroom, a bathroom, and a bedroom on a loft under a roof of old beams. There's a private patio with table and chairs just outside the kitchen's door.

The Stalletta is a charming small accommodation with a bedroom, a spacious bathroom, and a room with a kitchen, a dining area, and a lovely relaxing area with a sofa (that can be used as a day bed) that has been custom made with parts of antique wood. Just outside there is a private little garden with table and chairs and a stone barbeque.

The Capanna is a small cottage of stone, with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a room with a kitchen a livingroom and a dining area. It's walls have been maintained in stone on the inside too, whitewashed to give more light and brightness. This retreat too has a small private patio with table and chairs.

All accommodations have sofabeds for one or two extra people to be welcomed. We also have cots and high chairs for babies, at guests disposal.

For a few years we had an etching workshop on the premises, and we have enjoyed the experience of welcoming artists for long stretches of time. Writers too embraced the inspiring nature of Castellare to come and work on their writing projects. This is why, although we have moved the etching workshop to another location, we still have special rates in the winter for those who wish to come and dedicate themself to art; may it be writing, painting, or even the exploration of oneself.

Many of the pieces of art you will see in the houses have been produced here.

About Ms. Catina Cecioni

My name is Catina, and my family and I (my partner and my son) also live on the spot. This property was bought by my grandparents, and it has always been a holiday home for family and friends while I was growing up. I have been the first permanent resident though, for now almost twenty years, and I adore living immersed in nature in close proximity with the wildlife. Expecially deers. The restructuration of the house took some time during which I started really enjoying all things "home", from furniture to textiles to ceramics. Offering guests a holiday retreat with the warmth and care of a home , in the peace of nature, has become a passion as well as my job.

Ms. Catina Cecioni purchased this farmhouse in 1959

Why Ms. Catina Cecioni chose Pontassieve

Castellare's unique feature is it's location, completly sorrounded by nature. A driveway of about 700 meters connects the buildings to the main road, a charming winding street called Via di Parga with some breathtaking views. Then the driveway in the woods, where one feels the strains of contemporary life stay behind as the transformative power of nature takes over. Every time I come back from the center and the driving in traffic , I feel restored.

The house appears after the last curve as the most cherished retreat, a place where I have always felt welcomed, from the day I moved in, and it was just the cat and I. Although Castellare really conveys the feeling of being out of time, the neaby village of Molino del Piano (about 5 km away , downhill), embraced me like family. The people have something magical about them, as they are open and friendly and kind, and we easily bonded. To try and participate to local life, like going sometimes for breakfast or a coffee at the local bar ("bar" in Italian is a caffetteria), play tennis in the village courts, or even try the weekly appointment at the free cinema, may give a glimpse to what it means to live in the area. It's a life of simple pleasures, lots of smiles, friendship and all the inspiration one can wish for in perfect reach, may it be the opera , art to last for a lifetime of awe, the discovery of surprising corners of nature, the wandering in one of the most beautiful regions of Italy.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The benefit I try to offer guests if the comfort of a cozy home, where it's a joy to return to after a day of adventures. I like that we are small, with just four accommodations. It's not luxury that I love, but the uniqueness of handmade things, silence, and the stories of people from the world. There are many mega resorts in Tuscany, but very few settings like this, unspoilt, and a bit magic.

Beautiful, unspoiled, remote

  • 5 of 5

Catena and her husband have an incredible property with the charm of a medieval setting and the convenience of being close to a train station to get into Florence without difficulty. Any question or concerns are dealt with quickly and efficiently. You do need access to a car to get to the property. Catena is warm and engaging, and she and her husband live on the property. For my husband and I, it was an ideal honeymoon situation.....

A wonderful relaxing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived at Castellare owner Catina couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. On arrival we were greeted with a welcome cake she had baked for us and a bottle of a local red wine.

We stayed in the beautiful little cottage Capanna which is just perfect for a couple. It has a lovely kitchen with everything you need, beautifully decorated lounge, bedroom and bathroom.

Castellare is so quiet and peaceful, the swimming pool is in its own secluded part of the grounds, easy to relax your day away. The closest supermarket is about a 10 minute drive, but for a much bigger supermarket drive a little further to Pontassieve. It is also perfect as a base to visit the many local cities of Florence, Siena, Pisa and Bologna.

We were lucky enough to meet three lovely families in the other properties that make up Castellare, they have all visited on previous occasions. We had such a fantastic time we will certainly return in the near future. All in all Castellare is just an amazing place to stay..

Peace & tranquility

  • 5 of 5

or at least it was until we arrived with our 1 year old. Apologies to the other guests staying if they could hear us, luckily we were staying in Capanna, which is set apart from the main farmhouse.

Dont let the photos of Capanna fool you. She is small, but perfectly formed & the high ceilings make it feel much bigger. It has everything you need, including a washing machine. I love the decoration detail, especially the ceiling branch light!

Catina had set up a travel cot for our daughter in the bedroom, which had plenty of space. Anyone staying with a toddler should note that there is a step down from living room to bedroom/bathroom which is fairly big but once we'd taught the little one to sit down to get down it she was fine but if your toddler has only just learnt to walk or still crawling then you might want to take a travel gate (we had one but didnt feel the need to use it in the end). I think the property description says the shower is over a bath but it is just a shower cubicle, this didnt matter to us as the sink in the bathroom is huge & we used that to bath our daughter.

We arrived pretty late at night but Catina had waited up to make sure we got there safely & had very kindly got a few essentials from the shop for us (milk & bread, etc.). Plus she had made a delicious lemon & ricotta cake which didnt last long haha (Catina, yes please can I have the recipe?)

You do absolutely need a car (I would recommend people read a little about driving in Italy before going). If you are hiring one then try to get one that is more than 1.2 engine, ours really struggled up the Tuscan hills. We got the train from Sieci into Florence a couple of times which was very quick & easy. We managed to park in the main station car park both times, which is free.

I can definitely recommend the wine shop in Molino del piano (Chianti on tap for €3.50 a bottle!), we took a few bottles home with us. We also visited Castello del Trebbio which was very nice.

Overall I would recommend Castellare for anyone wanting a quiet, secluded holiday that has easy access to all the beauty & culture of Florence plus yummy cheap wine!

Zentral in der Toskana gelegenes, ruhiges Feriendomizil mit freundlichen Gastgebern

  • 5 of 5

Bliss in Tuscan hills

  • 5 of 5

We spent the most wonderful week at Catina's lovely home.

The farmhouses are beautifully decorated, with little extras like cookbooks, and novels to make you feel at home. When we arrived, we were welcomed with a bunch of roses, bottle of wine and biscotti, which is typical of Catina's generosity.

Although the farmhouses were remote (you'll DEFINITELY need a car) Sieci train station is just 10 minute drive away, and the train into central Florence only takes 10 minutes. Though we only managed to tear ourselves away from the tranquility of Castellere to make 2 trips into Florence!

There was a GREAT deli called Bottega in the nearby town of Rosano. By far one of the highlights though was the vineyard tour at Castle Trebbio, and the five course (30 euro!) taster menu at the restaurant there. As you can tell - there's PLENTY to keep you busy.

I would recommend this to people looking for some peace and beauty in the Tuscan hills - it was a holiday I'll never forget. Thanks Catina! x

Echte Idylle für Naturliebhaber

  • 4 of 5

The Castellare farmhouse is set in private woods between the tiny villages of Doccia and Fornello, fractions of Molino del Piano, Pontassieve county, in the Florence province. Although it's in a very private spot, it takes minutes to arrive to the closes restaurant and grocery store, and less than a half an hour to get in the centre of Florence. There's also a very convenient train station, in Sieci, 6 km away from Castellare. In a short drive you can get there, park your car safely and for free, and take a commuter train to the centre of Florence. It only takes 15 minutes, and trains are very frequent. There are two horse riding places within a ten minute drive, two golf course within a 25 minute drive, and tennis camps in Molino del Piano. All major cities of Tuscany are within an hour drive, and you could even go to the beach, swim in the sea and come back in a morning.

Other Activities: Wine tasting! food! Florence! peace....
