About this property

Chateau Madame De Miremont

Chateau Madame stands high on a hillside with views looking down and across a valley once lorded over by this 12th century Baronnie. Witness and party to the Hundred Years War, she is now a sleeping giant - one of peace and tranquility.

Chateau Madame has been meticulously restored with an eye towards preserving her original details and personality. Modern comforts and amenities, including a swimming pool, have been subtly woven into her fabric, allowing the original chateau to remain at center stage. Chateau Madame is the perfect place for couples, families, and friends to come, relax, adventure and just be. We love Chateau Madame, and it is our pleasure to share her with like-minded travelers.

Though set in the quiet countryside, Chateau Madame is central to and minutes away from all the remarkable places and adventures that we come to the Dordogne and the Perigord Noir for. Exploring the magnificent landscape and medieval surroundings will transport you to a another century. Chateau Madame is minutes away from such places as Castelnaud: Beynac, the one-time stronghold of Richard the Lionheart: the medieval town of Sarlat: the bastide town Domme; and a seemingly unending list of places and remarkable experiences.

The Dordogne is one of the world centers of prehistory and it records Europe’s earliest art treasures. At Les Eyzies, 10 minutes away, you will find the magnificent newly constructed National Museum of Prehistory, the cave paintings at Font de Gaume and the site of the Cro-Magnon man.

Directly below the chateau is a wonderful vegetable farm. You can walk down and get your vegetables freshly picked from these lovely people. Their colorful fields are visible from the chateau, but not their greenhouses.

When you arrive you will turn up the long grassy drive and traverse the hillside until you are facing the chateau, its terrace, and French doors leading into the kitchen. A massive wisteria clings to the chateau.

FLOOR PLAN

Kitchen
Entered through the French doors. Overhead are huge hewn beams as in all the rooms. The kitchen is fully equipped, including dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, electric kettle, gas four-burner stove.

Dining Room
From the kitchen, pass to the dining room. A huge fireplace, high beamed ceiling and stone walls the color of champagne greet you. Light pours in from the facing view of the valley onto the warm chestnut floors.

Stair Hall
From the dining room, pass to the stone stair hall. One of our favorite parts of Chateau Madame, it ascends to the 2nd and 3rd floor.

Living Room
Pass now to the living room, whose chestnut floors, huge fireplace and dimensions nearly duplicate that of the dining room. The furniture is decidedly comfortable as is the atmosphere. It is a place to relax with friends and family after a day of adventure or to just read a good book.

First Floor Bedroom
Pass out of the living room and up five steps to the 1st floor bedroom. A carved double bed faces a window view of the valley. The stone fireplace stands against the high peaked ceiling. An interesting feature is the lower portion of one of the towers, which now functions as this sleeping chamber.

First Floor Crimson Bathroom
Pass through the 1st floor bedroom into the bathroom. Without any question, this ensuite bathroom is the most incongruous part of Chateau Madame. Created during the 1960s - with a sunken tub! Walls, floor, and yes, the ceiling, are all beautiful crimson-red tiles. Dazzling! The washer and dryer are also located here.

Tower Room
Pass again through the 1st floor bedroom and you will find a small room with spiral stairway leading up to the tower and tower bedroom. A great place to be banished to, it has a single bed and the best views at Chateau Madame and the swimming pool. Through its own door, the tower room shares the crimson bathroom with the 1st floor bedroom.

Master Bedroom 1 - Second Floor
Opposite the bed is a massive fireplace. The room is large and duplicates the size of the dining room below. The master bathroom, also very large, has a tub, free standing shower, toilet and sink. A casement window looks out over the distant hills and valley.

Master Bedroom 2 - Second Floor
A beautifully carved stone fireplace stands adjacent to the bed with its warm red bed hangings. From there you will look out the tall windows across to the hills on the other side of the valley. The bathroom is located in the Watch Tower. The windows, once used by lookouts, were designed for these commanding views. Included are a tub/shower, toilet, and sink.

Third Floor
The 3rd floor is not part of the rental space.

We are two families 4 adults and 4 children (age 6-10) and have recently stayed for 1 week at Chateau Madame. Our first view of the chateau was from its imposing position on the hillside which could be seen from several kilometres away basking in the evening sun as we approached. There is a 400m meandering drive up the hillside toward Chateau Madame that provides a secluded and safe setting. The external grounds were ideal for spending the hot weather with ample shaded areas especially as we experienced temperatures in the high 30’s most of the week. The thick stone walls of the chateau meant the inside stayed relatively cool, supported by electric fans which were provide in each bedroom. Chateau Madame, has been sympathetically refurbished to a very high standard with high quality fixtures, fittings, appliances and artwork. The hosts were very conscientious and we appreciated the complimentary provisions on our arrival. We did encounter a problem at the start of our stay due to a communication error which meant we could not enter the property on arrival but this was rectified promptly, it is clear that guest satisfaction is the hosts highest priority. There is lots to explore within a short drive, from spectacular caves, lazy rivers and pretty towns. Chateau Madame has provided a perfect base to explore this beautiful part of France in the most opulent of settings.

Wonderful!
What a charming chateau in a tranquil setting. We loved our week here and wish we could have stayed longer. Floris and Marije were nearby if we needed anything and we appreciated the warm welcome. The chateau is beautifully appointed and we enjoyed spending time by the pool. We hope to return next year!

About the host

With a love of this part of France, my parents, artists, bought Chateau Madame in 1989. Having begun on the same path, my work had evolved to architecture and the design, oversight and restoration of historic buildings, which continues today. So needless to say, Chateau Madame was perfect. Chateau Madame came to me some years ago. I find her just as warm and fascinating as I did at the start. It's such a different environment from the norm; for me, it's the perfect place to keep a busy mind at rest.
I live on an 18th Century farm in coastal Rhode Island in the United States. Old for New England, there is a dichotomy yet a peaceful link between the two that I love.

Why they chose this property

Chateau Madame sits aside a quiet and untraveled hilltop village nestled under the ruins of the once massive Miremont Castle. You can take a pleasant walk up and around the village, coffee cup in hand, and frequently not see a soul. Yet literally minutes away are some of the most remarkable and famous locations in Southwestern France.

What makes this property unique

In addition to the other attributes of Chateau Madame: have you ever thought to yourself: "How wonderful would it be to live or stay in a real chateau, a castle, with all the romance and mystery, and have it all to myself!?" Then reality creeps in: have you looked at the size of an average castle lately? Whoa!
Chateau Madame is every bit a real castle, yet unlike most, it is of very reasonable proportion: 6500 Sq. ft. ~ 603.87 sq. meters.
For us and those who come to stay, that dream has been satisfied. That combined with its peaceful location and easy access to all things good in the Perigord Noir makes it hard to beat.
