Dordogne house in delightful valley with private pool

Updated: 11-Oct-2016
Living room, dining room/kitchen, bathroom,3 bedrooms, shower room.

La Gourdonnie is a farmhouse located on the outskirts of Campagnac-les-Quercy in a valley where the surrounding countryside is gently rolling hills and forest. The cottage is over 200 hundred years old and has been lovingly restored with exposed beams throughout. Living accommodation on the ground floor consists of a dining room and fully equipped kitchen, a living room with an enclosed wood burning fire and a bathroom. On the first floor there is a master bedroom, a double bedroom and a twin bedroom all with views over the surrounding valley. There is also a shower room /toilet on the first floor. The cottage is surrounded by a mature garden with lawns and apple and walnut trees. To the front of the house there is a covered patio and there is a further patio/barbecue area to the side of the house with garden furniture. The pool (8mX4M exclusive for the renter) has ample tiled and grassed areas with pool furniture and while being private retains views over the surrounding countryside.

The area has a wide variety of restaurants offering good value and excellent value for money. All will be busy over the summer and booking is essential. Good Food/Budget Prices. Cazals: restaurants on the square in Cazals Auberge du Bon Accueil and Restaureant de la Place. Salviac: opposite the Church in Salviac Auberge du Quercy-Damien-Le Patron)-v. good and similar to the Auberge in Cazals. Daglan (beyond St Pompom on the way to the river) has two restaurants Ferme Auberges: Le Maraval and Le Rocque: It's in the forest, about 2 km from St PomPom. In La Rocque Gagac -La Belle Etoile and in Les Arques-La Recreation - both excellent. The Cahors appellation extends to some of the land around Prayssac and a visit to the market can be combined with a visit to some of the vineyards on the way into the town. Both the Dordogne and the Vezere have excellent water sports and fishing facilities. “Soleil Plage” on the Dordogne at Cenac/Vitrac has a reputable canoe hire place and a good river beach. Sharp right turn in the middle of Vitrac village and drive out to the river passing a golf course. It is adjacent to a large camp site. The are many other canoe bases along both rivers and trips can be varied from a few hours to full day. Swimming Pool: The nearest public pool is in Salviac. Mountain Bikes: Can be hired in Sarlat –the Peugeot bike shop and in Gourdon. Riding There are riding schools in a number of nearby villages. Walks The whole area is good walking country- see walks guides on the book shelves. Domme Airport Micro-lighting and short light plane sight seeing trips at reasonable prices. Day Trips Cahors- a market trip can be combined with a visit to the Pont Valentre in the town with a picnic after on the river banks

La Gourdonie 2012

  • 4 of 5

On arrival at the house we were delighted by the tranquility of it's setting. The house itself felt homely at once and it was a relief to find what had been promised had been provided. Although initially a little daunted by the remoteness of the location, this quickly became a nonissue and we found ourselves very much enjoying the peace and quiet. The location is absolutely ideal for exploring the myriad of interesting places in the region. It is possible to have a really interesting and enjoyable days sightseeing without spending most of it behind the wheel! The house was clean and delightfully quirky especially the kitchen. The generous provision of wifi was also greatly appreciated. The pool was a great asset and again beautifully private. The owner was very attentive to it and to our needs, without ever being intrusive, this is a great skill and one we appreciated. We were given any help we needed quickly and generously and any minor difficulties which were very few were immediately sorted. This is a property for those who enjoy nature. I have never heard birdsong like it and the walks in the area are beautiful. Whilst our local village seemed a tad sleepy even for us! Daglan and Pompom were great and the lovely little restaurant in Pompom was a real treat. I would certainly recommend this property to some of my friends though not for July without careful thought as we will no doubt want to return ourselves! This is a great house for those who enjoy a long lazy dinner under the stars with good wine and no drive home. Plan ahead shop carefully get the barbecue going and you'll never want to leave this place it has a magic of its own Well be back

French Retreat

  • 4 of 5

Arriving after a long journey the keys were exactly where we expected, the house was a typical French farmhouse, everything was there that we needed to make our stay enjoyable. the outside living area was excellent. we explored the local area and went for several walks that we found from information in the farmhouse . the local village St Pompon had an excellent restaurant that we would recommend to anyone staying there.

Fantastic! Exceeded our expectations.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I along with our 2 boys (6y and 8y) and cocker spaniel made the journey from Cambridge down to the Dordogne. We were extremely impressed when we arrived because the location, house and pool far exceeded our expectations.

The house was a quintessential french farmhouse made of stone, with wooden beams, iron balcony and bright red shutters. It is set in beautiful surroundings on a hillside with fantastic views to watch the sun set each evening. The lounge contained a beautiful fireplace, bedrooms were a good size (gigantic master incl a cot), the kitchen contained everything that we needed to cook in the evenings and bathrooms were modern and spacious for the kids with bath and shower. There was an abundance of kitchen equipment, towels and sheets (beds were all made up for us when we arrived) and a welcoming bottle of wine. Outside there is a brand new pool (very clean) with small diving board and lights; of a good size more than enough to fulfil my little fish's needs for the week! (shallow area is approx 1m deep). It was delightful sitting out in the gravel courtyard under the trees in the evening with a glass of wine or two while the children played in the hammocks, thereafter by the pool watching the sunset with my husband while the children slept.

There are many things to do in the area and the house is perfectly located to access everything. We spent a delightful day on the Dordogne and can highly recommend the 3 hour kayaking trip. The current helped us along, we were able to take a picnic with us and a shuttle bus brought us back again. We then spent the afternoon teaching the boys how to fish and making dams. The house was only 15 mins drive from the Dordogne itself and so was perfectly located. We also visited a chateau and watched a Medieval Night by candle light. We bought fantastic foods at local markets (foie gras a speciality) and enjoyed a spot of shopping in some of the local towns with lunches in historic courtyard cafes. Vineyards were in abundance with guided tours.

Mike was very responsive and professional on emails and provided a thorough information pack. This is our first time using Owners Direct typically using Kuoni and Thomson Sensatori 5* AI holidays historically and we'd highly recommend this property and would stay here again without hesitation.

Peaceful and Rural - Great to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

This Gite has lots of character and charm and is situated in a very peaceful and private location. The pool has great views over farmland and into the forest. The property was clean and well presented on arrival and we enjoyed our stay greatly.

Rustic farmhouse in rural and peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a great family holiday here in August. The farmhouse is a rural retreat but only a short drive to local shops. It has a well equipped kitchen and a refreshingly large fridge! The pool was well used as were the eating out areas for all meals. It was quite hard to drag ourselves away from the pool to explore the area but we did and highlights included kayaking down the Dordogne (took nearly 3 hours!), the Friday market in Prayssac, the Chateaux of Beynac and Castelnord and topiary gardens at Marqueyssac. Rather than rushing around trying to see all the attractions we took full advantage of the beautiful location of the farmhouse and luxury of a private pool! Would definitely recommend and would love to go again.

A Charming & Discreet Property With Great Views

  • 5 of 5

We found La Gourdinie along a quiet lane leading out from Champagnac Le Quercy and it sits in lovely, quiet and peaceful Dordogne Countryside. Lots of space and a great terrace with dining table just outside the house where we could site and eat under the mature walnut trees. The pool has its own area just down a few steps and again this was nice to relax in and enjoy both privacy and lovely views of the pool and landscape. The kitchen is typical french farmhouse style and there is just about everything you need plus two bathrooms and as said plenty of space. We found this cottage was situated in a nice part of the Dordogne - but with easy access to Sarlat and the River villages all the same. Definitely visit Daglan and Gourdon and various of the other interesting villages nearby and if you are planning to enjoy proper outdoor (or indoor by the fire) fine french fodder then this is the place. The owner Mike was a lovely, professional and interesting chap to deal with and he has plenty of games, books and all the TV/DVD/Internet available if it rains (though it did that only once - brilliant blue sunshine the rest of the time!). Highly recommended, particularly given that my wife and I saw another gite advertised not many miles away which was certainly no better and 5 times the price (yes 5!). You can't go wrong with La Gourdinie - proper France, nice architecture, nice, friendly (but not nearby) neighbours and a beautiful spot. If you want quiet relaxation then this is the one. Good local resturants and the Supermarche in Cazals plus local boulangeries were excellent. Big enough for a family of four to five I guess as well but definitely great for couples. Highly recommended and we will definitely return !
