About this property

It's official, the National Geographic Society has identified Sunset Beach, in Brunswick County, NC, one of the World's Best Beaches.

Note - the property rents for full weeks (7 nights) only, Saturday to Saturday, June thru August.

If you're looking for a quiet, family oriented beach, stop looking--you just found it! Sunset Beach is a quiet, barrier island with the widest beach strand in the state. Our focus is vacationing families and you must be at least 21 years of age to rent the home. The island is a bike and pedestrian friendly community with little commercial development.

The home is approximately 400 ft from the dunes; an elevated boardwalk then leads you over the protected dunes directly to the beach strand.

The Holy Mackerel has 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths. The home is designed with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath on each side of the home with the living/dining area and kitchen in the center. This area was remodeled in 2020 with a vaulted wooden ceiling, recessed can lights, wainscoting, and paint. Each side has a privacy door separating it from the center living area. This arrangement is ideal for two families.

Each bedroom is equipped with cable TV and DVD/Blue Ray player. Bedrooms 1 and 2 have a queen bed and bedrooms 3 and 4 have two twin beds in each bedroom.

The kitchen has been recently updated with all new stainless steel appliances. The new stove features a convection oven with glass cook-top. The dining table seats 8.

The home is elevated and offers covered parking for 2 cars. Additional parking for 2 more vehicles is available in the driveway. A laundry area with front load washer and dryer is located on the ground level.

An outside shower with hot and cold water is located under the home and a cold water, basin sink is adjacent to wash out sandy bathing suits.

A generous sized, heavy wooden picnic table is on the concrete slab under the home with an outside grill just steps away.

Bed and bath linens are not furnished. Rental linens are available thru a local independent business. Ask for their contact information.

Cancellation Policy
No refund will be given unless property can be re-rented. If property is re-rented, the renter will be refunded his monies paid minus 15% of the rental cost.

Great for Families!

Our stay was lovely. The house was very family friendly and thoughtfully equipped. We brought some of our own supplies but having things like laundry detergent, dish soap, dishwasher pods, sand toys etc. already on hand was really sweet. The furniture was simple but durable which was perfect for our children. Some hosts over-communicate and it can be stressful but Tom and Becky didn’t do that. Our experience was positive, we’re grateful!

Another nice stay at Sunset Beach

Our second summer in this beach house. Appreciate the cleaning supplies (laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent, trash bags etc).available. Short walk ( 3-5 min) to the beach and a nice outside shower with multiple types of shower heads.

Wonderful time at Sunset Beach

Wonderful stay! House was clean and perfect for our group. Short walk to the beach; and I can’t say enough good things about Mr. Freeman, the property owner! Communication with him was friendly and easy. The cable went out the second day we were there. I called him, and a technician was there within the hour to take care of the problem! If you’re looking for a clean, comfortable house that is close to the beach, this is it!!!!

Hi, we are the Freeman family; Becky and Tom, owners of The Holy Mackerel. We have two adult sons (Jacob and Luke) with families. Thank you for visiting our site and considering our home for your family vacation destination. Our goal is to provide you and your family a safe, comfortable home at a competitive price.

While growing up in NC my family frequently visited our state's coastline. As a young boy I grew to love the beach and the marine environment.

Upon marriage Becky and I set as our goal to one day own a home at the beach. In 1987 we found our home and have been working on it ever since to to make it the best we could.

Please note - the home rents for full weeks only, Saturday to Saturday during the Summer months.

Why they chose this property

As a native I had seen many changes to our beaches as a result of aggressive development. Sunset Beach was different. Among all the North Carolina beaches I had visited, none had the same 'feel' as Sunset Beach. We found it to be a quiet, family oriented beach with little commercial development.

Back in the day Sunset Beach was accessed by a single lane, floating bridge that spanned the Inter Coastal Waterway. The island is now accessible via a safe, two lane high rise bridge that is always in service. I've heard it said many times that as soon as you cross that bridge everything changes.
