About the property

2 Bedrroms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 5

Converted Shepherd's cottage with family shared swimming pool, available for weekends and short term lets. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, Living room, kitchen and private terrace. Situated in beautiful countryside of cork trees, olive groves and vineyards, on the foothills of the Serra D’ Ossa 20 km south of Estremoz. Ideal for sight seeing in a scenic and historic part of Portugal and within easy reach by motorway of Lisbon (2 hours) and Spain (1 hour), the farm itself offers good opportunities for country walks, bird watching and quiet country life. Historical tours of Evora can also be arranged through a private guide.

There are a myriad of activities to enjoy on the farm. For the walkers or mountain bikers there are kilometers of footpaths around the 540 hectare farm for you to explore and for those wishing to venture further afield, the nearby peaks offer unrivalled views of the surrounding countryside. Serra d’Ossa lies at 500 metres above sea level and boasting one of the driest climates in Europe. The absence of light pollution makes this an astronomers’ paradise.

Twitchers can enjoy seeking out over 70 species of birds in the unique habitat provided by the cork forest, several of our past guests are members of the RSPB and have made lists of the birds they have seen / heard. Here is a list of a few: White Stork, Booted Eagle, Red Kite, Kestrel, Cuckoo, Tawny Owl, Hoopoe, Red-Rumped Swallow, Great Bustard, Little Bustard and Bee Eater. Visitors to the local damn include black winged stilts and the occasional avocet. Very occasionally, bustards can be seen in the lower plains.

Within a one-hour drive from the farm, you can also explore nearby towns including Evora (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Estremoz famed for its Saturday morning market, Vila Viçosa with its two royal palaces, Reguengos and even neighbouring Spain.

Vineyards : While predominantly a hilly cork forest , a vineyard has recently been planted in an open valley producing Alicante Bouschet, Aragonêz, Touriga Nactional and Syrah quality grapes. Most of the grapes are sold; however a selection of the best quality grapes are retained for the production of a high quality red wine sold in Portugal under the Cem Reis label, and in the Netherlands under the Het Tientje name. This wine has been awarded silver medals in Wine Masters Challenge (Portugal), Mundus Vini (Germany), and Challenge Du Vin (France). Next year a white wine will also be produced from viognier grapes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“What wonderful days we have spent at Herdade da Maroteira. The cottage is very comfortable having everything you need to make you feel at home. Its location is absolutely perfect for exploring all parts of the Alentejo region. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. this peaceful place we give the highest marks.”

“To enjoy a fine glass of local wine on your terrace still warmed by the evening sun. To listen to the humming of the bees and to the song of the cuckoo…while staring down the slopes of the Alentejo hills. Add all this to a most friendly welcome by our hosts to complete a picture of the lovely Herdade da Maroteira. ...we felt so welcome not only by the generously filled fruit basket and a bottle of good wine we found in the house but also by the attention you arranged for our twins... !”

Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful 5 weeks at Herdade da Maroteira - exploring the vineyards, the cork and olive trees, "walking" the dogs, observing the birds, sheep, goats and chickens, and relishing the scenery.

The cottage is clean, well-maintained and very comfortable with everything provided - just like home! The location is perfect to explore the Alentejo region; along with visits to Lisbon, the Algarve and the Douro Valley.

Our hosts were very friendly, warm, sincere and extremely helpful. We felt very welcome and comfortable at Herdade da Maroteira with its peaceful and breathtaking scenery.

Our only regret was we had to return home after 5 weeks of peace, tranquility and warm bliss.

Thank you to Philip, Margarida, Mafalda, Bea and all for making our holiday wonderful and a dream come true!

Perfect stay on a picturesque farm

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Philip's house was amazing. The views from the house were beautiful, the house was really comfortable, and Philip was awesome. He was really willing to accomodate for any of our needs. We took a jeep tour of the cork farm and drank wine from in vineyard out in the vineyard. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

Fantastic Holiday.

  • 5 of 5

Herdade de Maroteira was a fantastic holiday place, the information regarding the farm was very helpful. We found the area as very idyllic and peacfull.overall we had a fantastic time. The crok trekking tour was very informative and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

unexpectedly my wife was taken ill and has to be hospitalized but the help and support we received from the Mollet family and staff was absolutely amazing they are some of the most genuinely well meaning and kind people we've ever met.

Finally we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to our family and friends and hope to see you all again

thank you so much.
