Guestbook comments from the manager
We stayed at La Gratitude for 4 nights as a large extended family of 11 adults and 2 children. We planned a family trip to Hermanus to visit my Grandfather for his 100th birthday and we thought it might be fun to stay together. The real challenge was finding the right property to rent. La Gratitude was just what we had dreamed of and a whole lot more.
Firstly, I must thank Simon Pickstone-Taylor for indulging all our questions and requests for months beforehand! Secondly, without Iris the Incredible Housekeeper, our stay just wouldn't have been as fabulous. Iris went out of her way to assist us and make us feel totally at home. She also brought along her lovely sister Beryl to help us on 2 of the days with preparation/cooking for family meals.
It was a real privilege to enjoy this unique and historic property. The design is excellent and with almost every room en-suite, we were all able to enjoy our privacy when needed.
The biggest highlight for the children and 3 young adults was the heated jacuzzi. Although the days were bright and clear, there was snow on the high mountains in the Cape so the temperature was pretty fresh--perfect weather for a spell in the hot tub!
We all enjoyed whale watching--there were 2 pods of whales right in front of the house for almost the entire weekend.
At night we gathered around the wonderful fireplace and created some special family memories.
My grandfather's 100th birthday celebration was truly memorable as was our unique stay at La Gratitude--we can't wait to visit again...
Activity and Interests
La Gratitude is about 90 minutes drive from Cape Town, in an easterly direction along the garden route. It is 15 minutes drive from Hermanus village, perched above the famous beaches in the area. Hermanus, has many good restaurants, a ethnic craft market and a good range of shops. The southern most tip of Africa is a few hours drive further along the coast. Fine wines can be tasted at a number of Cape wineries within 30 minutes drive. A huge range of out-door activities are all within easy range. Fernkloof nature reserve with its rich vynbos (indigenous flora) provides excellent hikes into the mountain behind the house. There is a lagoon, on which a range of water sports are to be had, including windsurfing, water skiing and sailing. The cliff path starts meters in front of the house. The best land based whale watching in the world can be had from the cliff path or from the house itself. Hermanus has a popular 18 hole golf course and the Arabella golf estate is 30 mins drive away.
Other Activities: whale watching
