About the property

Bru Na Mara

Bru na Mara is a beautiful complex just outside Carna on the Wild Atlantic Way, that combines traditional design with modern comfort. The site overlooks a small harbour, and has spectacular views of the sea, the historic Mason and St MacDara's islands, and the beautiful surrounding countryside. Situated in the south west corner of Connemara, the complex is an ideal location for touring and exploring Connemara and South Mayo. Carna, which is situated in the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking region) is an important centre for Traditional singing, music, and dancing, with weekly sessions in neighbouring Kilkieran. There are a host of activities within easy reach, including a number of spectacular, unspoiled white sand beaches at Moyrus, (1.5 km) Mynish (7 km) and Callowfinish (8 km). The area is also ideal for walking or cycling, with little traffic, stunning views, and the cleanest air in Europe.

About Riona Connolly Green

My Name is Riona-Connolly Green, and I am a retired second-level teacher. I live here in Bru na Mara with my husband and my dog "Spot." We have a son and daughter who work elsewhere. My family started running Bru Na Mara as a guest house in 1933, and we re-opened as a high quality totally renovated Self Catering Accommodation centre in 2003.

While teaching offered its own rewards, in helping young people reach their potential over the course of the school year, operating holiday accommodation is very different in that every week new people arrive, usually desperately in need of a rest and relaxation, and at the end of their stay they leave transformed for the better.

Riona Connolly Green purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Riona Connolly Green chose Connemara

I grew up in this house, and running this business has given me the opportunity to meet and welcome people from all over the world, of all nationalities, and allowed me to share with them the incredible beauty of my native area which I so cherish.

I have travelled all over the world in the course of my life, and it's very rare to be able to find a place like Connemara with six entirely different types of landscape within minutes of each other. (Coastal, Mountain, Bogland, Lakeland, Fjord, Meadow)

So it is a matter of immense pride that people from all over the world come to the area I grew up in to enjoy it's unique culture and extraordinary natural beauty.

What makes this cottage unique

The air in Mace Head is so pure that it is the site of one of the most important atmospheric research stations on the European continent. The air comes directly across the Atlantic, and supports a wide variety of fragile and rare plant and lichen species. The proliferation of wild flowers and plants is extraordinary.

The Views from the premises include Mountains, Islands and Coast, and at night time, you can see stars. In fact you are so far from sources of light pollution that you can see all the stars. You are right on the very edge of the entire European landmass where it is possible to get away from the world if only for a short time, and get back in touch with the beauty of nature.

I can guarantee you, that wherever you are reading this, that the Carna area is about as different from where you are right now as it's possible to get. And Bru Na Mara is the ideal place to stay to enjoy this unique part of the world.

What a wonderful place! Cottage was lovely, clean, well equiped and charming. Owner was helpful and very kind. Safe for children. Property is walled so children can't get down to the shore very easy. Lovely place for walking. Beautiful sandy beach nearby. Highly recommended restaurant/bar/craft place within 5mins drive (Glynsk House). Bridget's Garden's (near Oughterard) is also a great place to visit if you have children. Rural, need a car.

This is a lovely part of Ireland. The house was just as described. Clean comfortable with excellent facilities.

Exceptional customer service from the property owners. Helped us enormously when my husband was hospitalised.

The local hotel and restaurants provide lovely meals with great service.

A must for a re-visit.

Amazing Location - Wonderful Host

  • 5 of 5

My fiancée and I stayed at Anna-Bru na Mara for one week in April 2016. Overall the experience was fantastic.

Location: Anna-Bru na Mara overlooks a beautiful bay and the Atlantic Ocean. We enjoyed waking up every morning to sunlight dancing over the rocks and sea. On land, Anna-Bru na Mara is surrounded by rolling rocky hills and miles of stone walls. Apart from being picturesque, these provided unforgettable hiking and walking experiences. Anna-Bru na Mara is a 10 minute drive from the town of Carna and about 45 minutes from Clifden. We found it a very nice balance between seclusion and convenience.

Accommodation: Anna-Bru na Mara is modern with all the amenities of home and more (including a dishwasher and washer/dryer!). We personally loved the electric fireplace that provided some extra warmth in the colder nights and mornings. The cottage has been redone recently and is far better than the average hotel experience.

Host: Riona is a friendly, warm, and hospitable host. She greeted us with a lovely welcome basket and gave us a detailed overview Connemara, including its best restaurants, activities, drives, and history. She also has a dog named Spot who accompanied us on our nearby walks and loved to greet us every time we came and left the property.

Summary: This was easily the best overall holiday we have been on. We hope to return again in the near future to re-experience everything Riona and Connemara have to offer.

Great views and warm welcome

  • 5 of 5

Very warm welcome in an cost little house with astonishing view over the ocean. Close to the impressive connamorra national parc, but best was just to sit and look over the bay. We stayed with our family of 4 (kids aged 11 and 9) for a week in the cottage.

We waited very long to write this review because we rather keep this terrific place our secret. We certainly plan to return, we love to see the ocean in all seasons, and our kids too.

Wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this extremely well-maintained cottage. The view is awesome, the location is great to tour around Connemara.

The beds are very comfortable and we had everything we needed to spend a great time!

Rhionna is very kind, eager to share some good spots or addresses, and she is always there if we need something (but not intrusive at all).

It took us a while to write this review...but 1 year after our stay, we still have fond memories of our wonderful holidays at Anna-Bru na Mara.

Cosy cottage with spectacular view

  • 5 of 5

The cottage ANNA is situated in a beautiful place offering spectacular ocean views. We appreciated Riona’s warm welcome and the fact that the cottage was impeccably clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. All the suggestions made by Riona were of interest. We had a wonderful time at the beach in Roundstone, and enjoyed our trip to the Aran Islands. It is ideal place for touring Connemara and we would love to go back.
