Our Stay in Sesta Godano
We chose this property mainly because of its location, which is handy for the motorway, while being situated in a small town with shops, bars and restaurants. It is an apartment on the first floor, rather than a house, the property is accessed by an external stone staircase - the stairs are a bit uneven and would not be ideal for anyone with mobility problems. The property is clean and basically but sufficiently equipped for 4 people. The bath is a very small 'sitting' bath but there is a separate shower. The kitchen is very basic with gas rings, a fridge and dishwasher. There is no oven, freezer or washing machine. The living/dining area is open plan with the kitchen. The best part of the property is the outside terrace, which is well equipped with chairs, tables and a shaded area. There is a garden area below, currently a bit overgrown and not really practical to use as you would have to bring chairs down the stairs. You will hear the bells from the nearby church every 15 minutes, which sounds pleasantly traditional while sitting on the terrace, not so great in the middle of the night! There is no private parking space for the apartment, but it is possible to park just across the road. There are supermarkets, cash machine and the usual small shops in the town. The only restaurant open while we were there was Pizzeria Selvatica, a few minutes' walk, on the far side of the market place and carry on as if going out of town (via Zeri). It's very good value for food and drink, limited other than pizza though, but much used by the locals. Albergo Cantarana was closed for holiday while we were there but the one evening we were able to go there it was very good and reasonably priced. Sesta Godano is not really a holiday town, but the location is convenient if you want to visit the area by car - it is some miles from Levanto, which is at one end of Cinque Terre, the immediate area Val di Vara is very pretty, and the nearby town of Varese Ligure is interesting. From the station at La Spezia you can get all around Cinque Terre, as well as further afield to Genoa, Milan and Turin, train travel is not expensive. Although the Cinque Terre is a big tourist attraction, the area around Sesta Godano is very quiet. Other good places to visit are Portovenere, Rapallo and Portofino, although the coast road round Portofino can be very busy. Levanto itself is worth a visit in its own right, plenty of small shops and restaurants.
