Le Vigneron- Beautiful old 2/3 bed cottage

This charming, deceptively spacious old French building is set-out over three floors. It was stripped right back before being completely rebuilt. This allows the luxury of under-floor heating.

The top floor currently offers a large double bedroom with en-suite bathroom. On the middle floor is an airy and light living room and an adjacent office/second bedroom with a very large treble bunk (can actually sleep four). This is reached up a short ladder, so it may not be suitable for the very young or very elderly, or someone with a disability. This room also contains a baby's cot if required. The ground floor has a well equipped modern kitchen with separate dining room/third small double bedroom, a second bathroom, and outdoor patio area for al fresco dining. In the evening the beautiful old 13th century Church is lit up and provides a wonderful backdrop for aperitifs or dining beside the pool.

About the property

Le Manoir

Situated in the heart of the lively 13thc village of Capestang (on the Canal du Midi) the restaurants, shops, cafes and twice weekly market are all a few steps away. It is a large, spacious old style French house with a 13thc tower (& resident owl). The main house is on 3 floors. The top floor has 1 double en suite and 3 twins rooms (2 en suite, 2 twins share the 4th bathroom). The first floor has 2 large en suite doubles, 1 has a dressing room with cot. In the spacious sitting room with comfy sofas are DVD, video, a music centre & wood burning stove for cosy nights. Also a new kitchen & large dining room. In front of the house is a large gated courtyard, whilst to the side is a secluded patio garden with pool (9x 4.5 and 1.2 deep). There is also a BBQ, summer kitchen with fridge, shower, cloakroom, table tennis table & lots of teak garden furniture for relaxing on. The church behind is lit at night and proves a wonderful backdrop to dinner!

At the other end of the dining-room, there is a step up to the curtained-off cube, which contains the double bed.

Happy Times

  • 5 of 5

R.T IRL. April 2008

I spent a week in the Vigneron House, with a friend and 4 children.

We loved the house, which is bright, cheerful, and tastefully decorated. The children (all under 8 yrs) particularly enjoyed the bed in the Cuve. The sitting room is perfect to have quiet moments, reading and relaxing. The Courtyard was ideal for the children to play, as it is secured from the road and the beautiful pool.

We enjoyed, our walks around the Village, along the Canal and our time spent on the Beach. The local people were very friendly and helpful. It was peaceful and relaxing to have our meals in the courtyard or by the pool. We found the food produce very fresh and, we were very satisfied, with our meals in the various restaurants,

We had everything we needed, for comfort, fun and relaxation.

We have recommended the Vigneron House and the Manior to our friends.

Lovely location in a wonderful village

  • 5 of 5

Loved the courtyard and pool area so peaceful and relaxing yet house is just down from lovely main square which is a gathering spot in evenings for a beer or glass of vino. I was on my own for a day or two and felt so safe and secure. Radhia the housekeeper is a gem and lives close by and was so kind and helpful. The house has everything you could need and I was there for three weeks. Capestang is a great location for touring or strolling or cycling the region. Have to return to visit a few local vineyards and there is a great choice of restaurants in village and surrounding areas. As a regular commuter by car in Ireland did not want a car and enjoyed using local buses and great train service that gets you to Perpignan and Narbonne in no time. I have already recommended Le Vigneron to friends and was chatting to friends from london and Switzerland last night who stayed a few days with me they really enjoyed their stay.

Unhappy experience

  • 2 of 5

We stayed at ‘Le Vigneron’ for six weeks over September-October 2011. We were very disappointed on arrival to find the house generally dirty and fitted throughout with very grubby Ikea furniture. Towels and bedding were threadbare and stained. Crockery and glassware were cracked and sparse. We also found the electric lighting levels in the house to be totally inadequate on dark evenings, making comfortable reading impossible anywhere in the house. Our complaints on all of these matters yielded only one small desk lamp and a final response from the owners that the house was let as it was. If we had not paid up fully in advance, we would certainly have left within the first week. In the event, we wound up having to scrub the house ourselves, and purchase some basic crockery, glassware, sheets and towels. On the positive side, we found Capestang to be an excellent base, with plenty of very good restaurants about and lots to see and do, and we thoroughly enjoyed our six week stay there. Although the basic structure of the ‘Le Vigneron’ house was potentially good, we would strongly recommend against renting this property unless the owners undertake a complete revamp of the contents and change the apparent attitude to cleanliness.

Owner's Response: It's always a pity when someone is disappointed, and we try to ensure this never happens. In this case however, during the first three days after arrival, we had no fewer than eleven emails with 'complaints'. These ranged from wanting another reading light (immediately provided) to wanting another larger table to play cards (again, immediately provided) but eventually we had to suggest the property was let as a holiday home, not an office. The allegations of dirt are completely unfounded, which will be borne out by the various happy customers who gave reviews on this site. As I said, I'm sorry when somebody is obviously disappointed, but quite frankly, I don't think these people would have been happy anywhere!

Le Vigneron Capestang

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks at Le Vigneron in the very pretty and lively town of Capestang in the Herault region of the Languedoc. We received a very warm welcome from the owner (Eilis). We were also looked after during our stay by Rhadia (Housekeeper) whose warm personality brightened up the enviroment. The house was spotless, very well stocked and had internet, sat tv and telephone. The swimming pool was a haven and the garden beautifully planted. It is ideally placed for strolling along the Canal Du Midi, exploring the regions many vineyards and is only a short drive to the beaches of Valras Plage and Narbonne Plage. I would say it was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable holidays I've had and I look forward to returning soon.

2 weeks in renovated barn

  • 5 of 5

We had a very very enjoyable holiday at the revovated barn next to Le Manoir at Capestang. The accommodation was stunning and absolutely fitted our needs as a three-generational family. Tastefully renovated and furnished, we just said 'wow' when we saw the interior Owner has obviously gone to a lot of trouble to furnish and equip it and it was also very clean. Housekeeper lives a few doors away - a very warm and friendly lady who made us feel immediately at home. It was good to know that she was nearby in case of any queries or emergencies - there weren't any as it happens! Capestang itself is a welcoming town and, historically, most interesting. Cathedral, castle, houses all fascinating and picturesque.

Would definitely return to this property. Although it is private, it is only 2 minutes walk to the market square - a great meeting place in the evenings and a market is held there twice a week. Canal du Midi is lovely and about 7 minutes walk from the property. Surrounding area also well worth exploring - we did not have a car, but managed fine with local buses to Beziers Gare Routiere and thence to places like Valres Plage. On request, the bus can also drop you at the SNCF station where there are regular services to places such as Montpellier and Nimes (both well worth seeing), also Agde and Sete. Next time, we would also go to Carcassone and Avignon for day trips. There are regular trains in the opposite direction to Perpignan and Spain just beyond. We felt we had just skimmed the surface of Languedoc - there is so much to see and do and would probably need another month or two to do it justice.

A very successful holiday and I would certainly recommend this property to friends - in fact, I have done so already!

Owner extremely prompt in responding to e mails during the booking process and also with any queries which have arisen - we have been impressed and pleased with everything to do with this holiday from start to finish.

location de charme

  • 4 of 5

Capestang is a beautiful 13c village on the Canal du Midi, and is surrounded by lovely vineyards and woods for walking and cycling and riding. There are lots of very good markets in this area, both for wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables and general goods. The coast is 20 mins away with sandy beaches, some excellent fish restaurants and the fish market of Sete. For history there is the ancient walled city of Carcasonne, the Roman town of Narbonne, and the city of Perpignan. Montpellier, the buzzing university town, is only an hour away. Spain is only an 1 1/2 drive away and has a very different style to France. Or just sit by the pool with a book.

Other Activities: Cruising on the cana du midi
