WE EXCEPT EUROS OR STIRLING
A delightful ten days. We were first time visitors but will be back to both the island to this magical place perched high on the vertiginous slopes above a limitless ocean.
Driving motor cars on the wrong side of the road has always made me anxious but doing it on some of the roads hereabouts was a sort of aversion therapy.
Brian looked after us well and the odd minor snag was rapidly and good humourdly sorted. Everyone we came across was friendly and smiling.
We came for the walking and discovering and we will be back for more as soon as we can.
We stayed here for the second time and it was perfect again. The apartment is very clean and comfortable, everything you need was available (coffee, tea, oil, spices etc.). Also, you get a welcome present consisting of a bottle wine and some fresh fruits. Worth mentioning was the breathtaking view! 😍
You can reach the next supermarket by your rental car in 5 minutes, where is a beautiful beach and lot of restaurants too.
Brian and his wife are very friendly and helpful and you can always have a smalltalk. 😊
We are looking forward to see you and Madeira again in 2 years!
Best regards
Kathrin and Andy
We rented an apartment at Casa Serena for two weeks, but decided to leave after nine days. The apartment was very clean and the view is fantastic, but we found it quite poorly planned with insufficient lights (no lamp above the kitchen sink and only one bedside lamp), poor heating, which we were advised not to use, and a tricky hot water boiler. The only comfortable furniture were the plastic chairs in the balcony.
More important the nearby restaurant, Engenho Velho, and shops mentioned in the description we read were closed and had been for quite a while. We had counted on going out for dinner at night, but driving to Calheta in the dark seemed perilous for someone not used to hairpin curves and steep and narrow roads, so we cooked supper ourselves almost every night.
This could have been OK, but the kitchen lacked basic equipment such as trivets, sharp knives and cutting boards. There was no dish drainer and the frying pan was useless.
Most of the information brochures in the apartment were more than 10 years old and the TV-set probably dates back to 2004.
The trouble is that the description of the apartment perhaps did too. We can see that you have now updated it.
Casa Serena really lives up to it's name and the photos can't convey just how lovely the accommodation and the setting are. On arrival we were given a truly warm welcome by Brian and Catherine. Although they live on site they are not intrusive and always ready with advice and information, nothing was too much trouble and one gets the impression that they sincerely enjoy what they do. The facilities were immaculate, I have often had to clean holiday accommodation before I felt comfortable, but not so here! The kitchen has enough equipment for the dedicated cook. The view from the balcony was stunning and so breakfast each morning was taken there. It was thrilling to watch buzzards wheeling and to hear an amazing dawn chorus accompanied by the cockerels! There is a well-stocked supermarket in Calheta, just a short drive away. Take a phrase book as the locals appreciate attempts with some Portuguese and a few of the shop assistants spoke no English. There is also a little local shop within walking distance. We were left wine and fruit as a welcome pack and Brian and Catherine had gone the "extra mile" by getting some basic items of shopping at our request. We hired a car which we felt was essential to seeing as much of the island as we wanted to in our limited time. The roads can be hair-raising but just take care and allow plenty of room on the bends! If you make the journey to Sao Vicente then the Restaurante Cavello does an amazing omelette, chips and salad for a very reasonable price. We went twice! If it's chilly, eat upstairs and enjoy the view. I can't recommend this accommodation and location highly enough and Brian and Catherine are to be commended for their attention to detail. I hope we can return one day.
We stayed for three weeks at Casa Serena, Jan 17th to February 6th.
The apartment was superb, very clean and well equipped. Brian and Catherine were extremely helpful with local knowledge. The weather was poor and around us several landslides cut off the main routes to Funchal resulting in having to use the mountain roads, a bit hair-raising at times. Absolutely essential to have a hire car but make certain you check it our before driving off, especially tyre pressures.
We love levada walking but this was also a bit tricky with slippery conditions and mud slides.
We enjoyed good local resaurants,( make a point of going to the "look-out point" just outside Arco Calheta, best coffee on the island, and stunning views.
If you are planning a trip to Madeira we would heartily recommend Casa Serena as a base for exploring the island.
All in all we enjoyed ourselves, but if we returned we would probably opt for March/April.
