Charming refurbished historic cottage ten minutes from Bath

One bedroom cottage in village location close to Bath City Centre.

Renovated in October 2013 this one bedroom character cottage is located just two miles from the centre of Bath. Spread over three floors there is a generous sized bedroom on the ground floor with a king size bed plus a double studio bed (can be converted to singles) in the bedroom or a double sofa-bed in the lounge for occasional use, a lounge on the first floor and a kitchen/diner on the top floor with rooftop views over the village to the hill beyond. The top floor bathroom has a full size bath with a shower over and has been fully tiled in natural stone. The fully fitted kitchen is equipped with a microwave, gas hob, electric oven, washer/dryer and dishwasher. There is full central heating, free broadband Wi-Fi and free local and national phone calls. Parking is free on-street parking. There are plenty of great places to eat within walking as are canal and riverside walks and the outstandingly beautiful St. Catherine Valley.

Batheaston: Batheaston is a small historic village on the edge of the Cotswold and St. Catherine Valley. Access by car or bus takes a few minutes and it takes about 40 minutes to walk to Bath along the canal tow path. During the season there is a boat service to Bath. Within a short walk from the cottage there are several good local pubs and restaurants, a small supermarket, chemist, fish and chip shop and hairdressers.

Bath City: Bath is a city in Somerset in the south west of England. It is situated 99 miles (159 km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. The population of the city is about 80,000. It was granted city status by Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1590, and was made a county borough in 1889 which gave it administrative independence from its' county, Somerset.

The city was founded, among surrounding hills, in the valley of the River Avon around naturally-occurring hot springs where the Romans built baths and a temple, giving it the name Aquae Sulis. Edgar was crowned the first king of England at Bath Abbey in 973. Much later it became popular as a spa resort during the Georgian era, which led to a major expansion that left a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone.The city became a World Heritage Site in 1987.

Very accessible and comfortable stay nr, Bath

Very pleasant accommodation for couples or families. Very comfortable double bed . Sofa beds for extra people. Very clean. Internet access which is very handy. Newsagents and bustops within walking distance into Bath. Very handy convenience shop, also two pubs, post office and fish and chip shop with cafe, hairdressers, small boots. Everything you need on one inconspicuous street. Also short distance to path along canal which takes you to Bath. Enjoyed our stay very much.

Something of a Tardis ... looks small from outside - very roomy within.

The Batch is conveniently situated in Batheaston, a very good base for exploring the area. For visits to Bath, the buses are very regular, every 10-15mins or so. No need to struggle with parking in Bath as there always seems to be parking in the village. For exploring the surrounding area, there's no need to contend with the Bath traffic.

The property itself proved to be very comfortable, cleverly designed across 3 floors, plenty of space for the three of us who stayed. Paul dealt with the booking, and a couple of queries that we had, very efficiently, and we would unhesitatingly stay here again when we revisit the area.

Beautiful property!

It's a beautiful property situated in a small town area of Batheaston! So surprised with the easy bus system (15 minutes on bus into Bath city centre) and the choice of pubs, shops and cafes a 5 minute walk away! We felt safe (all ladies alone on holiday) as the front door was off the main road onto a side road. It was clean and tidy when we arrived and fully stocked kitchen! (We loved the ceramics!) Though it got a little warm, we were lucky enough to have nice weather, they supplied air con devices and fans which worked perfectly! Loads of room in the bedroom/area to comfortably fit 4 of us! Cute and quirky, definitely a lovely place to stay if you want a little break away! Views were stunning, lovely canal walk near by and the locals are extremely helpful and very friendly! The only issue was the hill back up from the pub, not a good idea in heels, unfit and slightly merry from cider. I have saved this property in my inbox and will be using it again in the future! The price was reasonable for the style, size, functionality and beauty of the property! Also the communication with the owner was helpful and comforting. Thank you so so much! X

Comfortable, well maintained and in a good location.

We really enjoyed our stay in the upside down house over Easter: it was very clean and spacious, and beautifully fitted out with everything for a comfortable stay. The kitchen/dining room on the top floor was our favourite spot, with lots of light and views out on two sides, the bathroom was lovely, and we got used to the spacious bedroom being two floors down! Incidentally, this is the first place we have stayed in years where the bed and bedding were just like home – bliss!

The situation was very convenient: we were able to park the car down the road once we’d unloaded, and leave it there for 4 days! There is a convenience store down the road to the left (well hidden!) which never seems to close, you can walk into Bath along the towpath or get a bus every 15 minutes, there are pubs and restaurants within walking distance, and a Morrisons a few miles down the road to Bath. You can even take an open-topped boat back from Bath as far as Bathampton Mill, which is very pleasant! We also took a couple of very pleasant walks in the area: one to the hill fort, from which there are fabulous views, and one along St Catherine’s valley, with its babbling brook.

Just what we were looking for in almost every respect: the one surprise was the amount of traffic along the High Street in this tiny village, which bothered me more than my husband!

Good position as you could walk to Bath

You need to be fit to stay in this cottage! Not suitable for less able or people with babies or toddlers really as lots of stairs and very interesting layout - bedroom in basement, living room on middle floor and kitchen and bathroom on top floor.

Parking was a bit of an issue but we did find somewhere nearish. You need to block the little road its on whilst unloading and then go off to find somewhere to park. I could imagine summer-time would make parking an issue. That's the less good side of things and as long as you don't mind that, the cottage is reasonably priced and comfortable enough with everything you need.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the trouble to point out these issues. I have always tried to make people aware that the cottage is spread over three floors and it not suitable for people that have trouble with stairs. However, many people with toddlers have stayed here and loved it and reviewed that it is very suitable for toddlers. Whilst I agree that you may not always find a parking space right outside it is never a long walk to find one.

Lovely cottage

Fantastic little cottage just outside Bath. Well equipped, clean, comfortably furnished and very reasonably priced.

A lovely walk along the canal into Bath takes about 50 minutes or the bus just outside the cottage will have you there in 10.

I would happily recommend to friend.

This is an entire region of fascinating depth and historical context. The area has varied geography including river valleys and rolling hills. The history of human habitation is long but expanded massively during Roman times, and played significant roles in the Saxon era and English civil war. Industry developed from a largely agricultural basis to include coal mining with the coming of canals and railways. Bath itself developed as a spa resort in Georgian times and remains a major cultural tourism centre having gained World Heritage City status.

Batheaston was named Estone in the Domesday Book and is overlooked by Solsbury Hill which is within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and was an Iron Age hill fort occupied between 300 BC and 100 BC. It is also linked to Bathampton on the south bank of the river via a toll bridge. Near the river crossing is the site of a Roman villa. Elsewhere in secluded St Catherine’s valley is the Tudor manor house, St Catherine's Court.

There are many places to visit including tithe barns, ancient churches, pristine villages and the Cotswold Way. The West Country features not only the amazing city of Bath, but Stonehenge, Avebury, Salisbury and Glastonbury. Longleat Safari Park and many National Trust country houses are less than one hour by car.

There is free on-street parking, usually very close by. Pets are not allowed and there is no place for bikes. Originally a Georgian church furniture workshop the building was converted around 1920 and retains some character.
