Overview

About the property

Two bedroom, two bathroom, with mountain and sea views in outskirts of Chania.

Writer's restored stone house in idyllic village of Tsikalaria.

Tsikalaria is at the base of the Malaxa mountain and our house is set at the highest point of the village with only a tiny church, a farm and the mountains behind us.

The house is fully restored and has extensive terraces and views over Chania and Suda Bay.

The second bathroom and study are in their own walled garden. There is a washing machine in the second bathroom. And a fold-up bed in the study.

In the main house we have a double bedroom, one lounge with double convertible couch, dining room, kitchen and small bathroom.

We also have high speed wifi and international TV channels. And a DVD player.

The very extensive front terrace, has tables and chairs and sunbeds in a lovely garden.

There are additional tables and chairs in the walled garden

There are spectacular views of Chania and Souda bay from the roof terrace and a table and chairs to watch the sunset.

A short walk from the house down a winding lane through the grounds of a famous Byzantine church brings you to a Taverna, two Kafeneons, 2 small supermarkets, a butcher and a pharmacy. Larger supernarkets are five minutes drive away.

Another five minute drive or 15 minute walk through olive groves takes you to a friend's swimming pool, which you are welcome to use.

Our house is an excellent place to enjoy the tranquillity of a Cretan village, and the warmth and hospitality of the Cretan people. But it is also a convenient base to explore the rest of western Crete.

Our friend, Stella, lives close by and takes care of the house and the gardens. She will greet you and take you on a short tour of the village.

The house is best suited to a couple, or a couple with up to 3 children who are mobile.

About Vivien Lincoln-Gryff

Christopher is a writer and magazine editor. I am a retired qualitative researcher who writes about cats. There are some interesting ones around the house.

Vivien Lincoln-Gryff purchased this house in 2002

Why Vivien Lincoln-Gryff chose Tsikalaria

I have always had a great love of Greece, especially Crete, which I have known well since the 1970s. And when I found the house as a ruin, it struck me immediately as a perfect location, and a chance to restore it to being a traditional Cretan property, with its large terraces and good sunny and shady aspects.

What makes this house unique

This is in a very old village, close to many amazing historical sites, especially the Roman ruins of Aptera, and the three monasteries of the Akrotiri, with its superb beaches. There is a serenity about the village, which we found was peopled by warm and hospitable neighbours. There are no other tourists, but many of our friends here speak English. A local girl, Stella, looks after the house and is always available to avise or assist you.

A lovely relaxing simple cottage in a peacefull village close to Chania

  • 5 of 5

The cottage has everything you need for a relaxing stay. Lovely areas to relax outside, air-conditioning washing facilities good WiFi and sattalite TV if you wish. The villiage is quiet and peaceful and we'll placed to use as a base to explore the Chaina region. We were kept really well informed by the owners Vivien and Chris and had really useful things to do suggestions from them.

There is a lovely woman called Stella that lives in the villiage and looks after the property and anything you may need.

Vivien and Chris are also just at the end of the phone with help and advice and local info if you need it. There are some cats that come with the cottage they are no bother and we fell a bit in love with them. If you hate cats then this isn't the property for you.

NB Fly into Chaina airport if at all possible, Heriklion airport is terrible.

Un lieu magique

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful village home

  • 5 of 5

We only had just under a week to enjoy this wonderful house at the top of the village. A great location with easy access to the highway, Chania and Sousa Bay. The house is not luxurious but it is very clean and it has everything you need for a base to explore western Crete. The highlight for us was the incredible terrace with its views and, at least when we were there, kittens! A great place to curl up and read a book. Viv and Chris are wonderful hosts - thank you so much for taking time to introduce us to Crete - and Stella, who lives in the village, was a great resource.

A good base for exploring the west of Crete

  • 4 of 5

This is a modest house in a pleasant location on the edge of a village, with no tourists nearby, a good base for exploring the west of Crete. It is not luxurious, but clean and well-maintained. The owners, who live some distance away in Chania, were hospitable and helpful without being intrusive. The house is maintained by an exceptionally nice maid, Stella, who speaks good English and lives only a few minutes;' walk away.

Ein nettes Haus für Ruhe und Entspannung

  • 5 of 5

2 weeks with wonderful weather in october in Tsikalaria, a little Creta village in the near of the romantic Chania. The charming and quiet house with the beautiful terrace and the view of sea and mountains is good for relaxing.

Vivien and her husband are very hospitable, cordial und helpful. In our prepariation of the holidays Vivien has already helped us. Then they spent their time to show us Chania and the surrounding, to show us some romantic places. Also Stella, who cares the beautiful plants and the house, has given us important informations. The botanical garden, about 15 km away from Chania in the mountains, ist very impressing. It was built from young people after a terrible fire. We want friendly thank Vivien, her husband and Stella and recommend the nice house to all guests very much.

Wonderful village house

  • 5 of 5

This is the most wonderful setting for a fantastic Cretan holiday. The house is set at the top of the village and you really feel a part of things. The village is quiet and people were incredibly friendly. The house had wonderful views over Souda bay and was spotlessly clean and very well appointed (with wifi). Air conditioning made sleeping easy in temperatures that were 30C+. Viv ensured we had a welcome awaiting for us - despite our flight being delayed, meaning we arrived in the small hours of Sunday morning. There was a Greek salad, carafe of wine and a beautiful dessert. Stella, a wonderful person in the village was there to make sure we were settling in okay and answered all our questions about where to go for this and that. When you go, do make sure to visit "Mr Rabbit" as we called him, the taverna in the village. He is so charming and the food is great. His speciality (unsurprisingly) is rabbit cooked in wine and it has got to be tasted.

The long and short of this, is that we will be going back. And that's unusual for us - we have very rarely gone back to the same place twice, preferring new adventures; but I make the exception here. We felt this was home from home and there is just so much to see and do in this wonderful part of Crete.
