About James Collis

We are a small family concern specializing in providing a holiday base for families with young children to explore the beautiful Silver Coast.

The villa is split into 2 apartments, we live in one the other we rent out as described.

James Collis purchased this apartment in 2007

Why James Collis chose Caldas da Rainha

The location is very private, set up with safety and security for young families. It offers great access to a wide variety of both essential and fun facilities, as well as being 15-30 mins from 4 very different blue flag beaches.

What makes this apartment unique

Large saltwater heated pool that is fenced, gated and secure. Private sheltered south facing mature garden with BBQ and naturally shaded areas. Lots of local activities and places of interest for all ages, some walkable others between 5 and 30 mins away. Many families comment it's a great base to explore the Silver Coast as well as good to stay in and enjoy for whole days, and a week is just not enough. The layout of the apartment lends itself well to young families with grandparents along.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Really enjoyed our stay here, pool great, people friendly. Nazare, Alcobaca, Obidos, Leiria, Peniche, Bathalha all well worth a visit, fantastic days out. The best beach we found was Foz do Arelho. Best restaurant is Paraiso, food is great, good value, plus the locals eat there too. If during your stay the medieval festival is on at Obidos - GO - its a must, a brilliant night, all for 7 Euros. Our overall rating for this holiday 8/10.

Loved every minute!

  • 5 of 5

We have loved every minute of our holiday! From the moment we arrived we have been looked after, provided for and well fed! Everything you could possibly want or need is available here and we were able to cook a full lasagne meal from scratch in the apartment. This is truly the most welcoming home from home both cosy and spacious with plenty of books, toys, dvds and no expense spared for useful and practical shelving, storage and lighting. The beds are comfortable and the duvets are luxurious. The shower is very powerful too. Our highlights have been (in no particular order) the pool, BBQ, Easter egg hunt, lunches on the patio, sun loungers, treasure hunt, magic egg pot, pancakes for breakfast, park at Caldas, Obidos Castle and souvenir shops, haircuts at Tiptop, Dunes at Salir do Porto, trying out Portuguese language, family games, Torturers' muesli, beach at San Martinho, Pirates' tunnel, rock pools, power showers, Pao de Lo, peanut crisps, Chinese hypermarket, PingPong and the Oceanarium at Lisbon. It's been a fantastic week but our only complaint is that it has gone too fast! Thank you for a wonderful stay! Can't wait to come back!

Perfect first holiday with toddlers

  • 5 of 5

The photos don't do it justice! Fab apartment, very private, and an excellent choice for us as we brought mother in law along too. So many toys and books, we didn't need a single thing. When we first arrived, we thought, "where the hell are we?" - it feels like the middle of nowhere, but within a day we'd got our bearings, found the supermarket and been to the local restaurant where they practically fawned over the kids. We used the comments book to work out what to do - which came up trumps, but was also my only piece of feedback: I would have loved a little guide to the area, alongside the maps - best lagoon, best place to eat in the eves, watch out for bank holidays when everything closes. We did get all this info, but it's handy to have reference!

Thanks again for a brilliant stay - the kids LOVED the pool!

Owner's Response: Thanks E....., good feedback too. Our plan is to have a simple guide that covers the most popular and common requests. Your approach to doing what others found worked well from the visitors book was particularly helpful. Given the number of paper reviews we can now make this easier and and richer. cheers James & Alison

A well-equipped apartment ideal for toddlers

  • 5 of 5

Casa de Castelo is situated off a quiet village road. It includes a secure patio area where children can play in the sand pit or paddling pool. As our children (1 and 2 years) are on the adventurous side we were pleased that the apartment was completely secure for them. A shop and cafes are only a short walk away in the village and a supermarket only 10 minutes drive away. We could drive to the beach in 20 minutes which was very child-friendly. Lisbon too is an easy hours drive on the motorway and this offers attractions like the impressive Oceanarium.

The owners were very helpful yet discrete and their advice and assistance really helped our holiday. We would definitely come back!

Wonderful family holiday in a lovely apartment

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Portugal and we had our toddler with us, so we were really pleased to have stayed in this lovely apartment. Alison and James, the owners, were so friendly and helpful and greeted us quite late in the evening with a warm welcome and milk and tea bags for a cuppa, after what had been quite a long journey.

The apartment was tidy, clean and very homely. There was a large dining table and well-resourced kitchen. Our daughter loved the toys, books and DVDs that were provided. There was also a cot, baby bath, high chair and crockery for young children which was just so helpful.

The patio was excellent and served as a lovely little play area for our wee girl. She loved the sand pit. We used the swimming pool just once as it was just a little bit nippy at this time of year, but it was a great pool.

The apartment itself is in a great location as there are lots of places fairly close by that make good day trips, ranging from 15 minutes to an hour and a quarter in the car. We particularly enjoyed the beach and lagoon at Foz do Arelho.

James was really helpful in giving us ideas for rainy weather, and Alison told us about good places to eat nearby. One other thing to mention is that they provide a babysitting service which we took them up on. It was really nice as it meant that we were able to go out to a nearby restaurant and have a lovely meal, safe in the knowledge that Alison was looking after our little girl.

We'd recommend this fabulous apartment and would consider coming back again at some stage.

Spacious, cool and well equipped apartment.

  • 5 of 5

This is a modern, clean and well equipped apartment for anyone travelling with children. The salt water pool is a good size and there are plenty of toys and DVDs to entertain children. Our two year old especially enjoyed the sandpit. There are some really nice touches, such as a proper cot (as opposed to a travel cot) and all the beach equipment you can think of available to take on a day out. The apartment is ideally located for access to some stunning beaches (particularly Foz do Arelho) and the nearest town, Caldas da Rainha, has fabulous daily markets and a huge park with a cafe, boating lake and play park. James and Alison are very unobtrusive but always available to offer practical advice and offer suggestions about the local area (which they know very well). Overall, we had a great family holiday and will definitely return.

  • 4 of 5

The apartment is ideal for sleeping 6 + 1 or 2 babies in cots. During high season we normally rent the whole apartment for a minimum of a week at a time. Flexible changeover dates if they fit our calendar means cheaper flights and less busy car hire, historically we've had lots of 10 - 11 day bookings. N.B. Generally we do not accept bookings from all adult groups.
