Great Apartment in beautiful location overlooking Ionian Sea

  • 4 of 5

The apartment is very well appointed with everything you need. The lounge & front bedroom have doors on to the balcony overlooking the rocks & sea - great views across to Calabria - getting up early to watch the sunrise is well worth it ! There's a decent size kitchen, well equipped, and bathroom. The two bedrooms at the rear of the flat are a bit tired but ok. Our only complaint would be that we were not given enough info when we arrived. We were not shown how to access the two additional outdoor areas - the roof terrace which is huge & has a BBQ + great views of Etna - & the back balcony which gets the sun in the afternoon.

The managers were, however, most helpful, bringing us wood for the open fire when it got cold & a clothes dryer, they were very anxious to help when required - grazie ! It would be useful if info on the local area was provided - shops, restaurants etc. There's a train station 10 mins drive away where you can travel up & down the coast to Catania, Messina, Siracusa, Taormina etc, if you don't fancy driving - Sicilian drivers are crazy, make sure you're fully insured ! You're within striking distance of plenty of attractions, you'll need a car. Don't miss Etna (about 1hr drive)- it's expensive 63 euros pp, but well worth it !

The apartment is in a nice residential area but the rest of Pozzillo is a bit shabby.

We really enjoyed our stay & would definitely recommend it.

A pleasant base to explore nature and culture along the east coast of Sicily

  • 5 of 5

We stayed the second week of May 2016 in Alessandra's apartment in Pozillo and enjoyed it very much. The spacious flat is located in the upper floor of a two-story building, situated on the ragged lava coast just 20 m away from the sea (actually, this land resulted from an Etna eruption in the 11th century). It offers a large balcony to the East, where you can enjoy breakfast in the morning sun, and also a huge roof terrace for sun-bathing, reading, or having a barbeque. From there one has a fantastic panorama view of the surrounding towns, orange and lemon plantations, the sea, and the all dominating Etna massif. The apartment has just been renovated completely, still preserving the typical Sicilian style in colors, furnishings and beautiful ceramic decorations, thereby showing its own pleasant charisma. One can still feel that this was the residence of a large Sicilian family (Alessandra's parents) during the hot summer months. Accordingly the kitchen is equipped with a large number of dishes, silverware, pots and pans.

For us (a German couple) this was an ideal base to explore the natural and cultural high-lights of the region by car, especially the North and South routes into the Etna park. On the North route a very impressive and easy hiking path into the unreal crater landscape can be found about 1 km before the refuge (Refugio) Citelli. Highly recommendable on the South route - aside from the Refugio Sapienza region- is also the Vulcano House Museum in Nicolosi (call for opening hours).

The whole organization of our visit went very smoothly, Alessandra received us at the apartment, gave us the keys and some instructions for the flat, made a tour with us through the surrounding villages, and showed us all the places which are of general interest for tourists. For us, as non-Italien speakers, it was a great pleasure to communicate with her in fluent English.

We can recommend the apartment without any restrictions.

Beautiful scenery

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in the beautiful Casa Ionio in Acireale. The scenery was wonderful and on the terrace above the house you had a wonderful view of the Etna, and on the other side the blue sea. The weather was very warm. We have never been in a house this close to the sea. All you needed was in the house. The service was good. A very nice experience.

Wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful house with an amazing view and great location! The apartement is very spacious and clean. Just in front of the house the seashore made of thsi incredible lava rock, you can dive directly from them into blu and clean water. Etna is just back of the house, visible from the big terrace at the top of the building. The apartment is equipped with nice and comfortable furniture and accessories. The owner , Alessandra, is very nice. You feel to be in a sort of private paradise. We always looked forward to get back to this wonderful home and to enjoy it.

Pozzillo is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Sicily. The quaint fishing village lies halfway between Catania and Taormina and just five kilometres from Acireale (a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches). Giardini Naxos, a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches, is just 25 kilometres from Pozzillo. Beside it we find Taormina ‘the pearl of the Mediterranean’ and the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek theatre is world famous for its extraordinary panoramic views. Santa Maria la Scala and Aci Trezza are pleasant seaside villages near Pozzillo. Travelling south, one hour’s drive away lies Syracuse
