About this property

Traditional stand-alone spacious stone house in a small village

A recently renovated old stone house that has all modern amenities, four bedrooms, two living rooms (the second one can also be used as an extra sleeping room), two bathrooms, one full-featured kitchen and a small kitchenette, it sleeps comfortably 8 and up to 12 people.

Located midway in the ancient north-south passage of Eastern Crete, about seven kilometers from each of the Libyan and the Aegean sea, it offers a perfect refuge for excursions to beautiful beaches and majestic mountains and plateaus.

My family home since the late 19th century, it was built over a couple of centuries and renovated in 2011-2012. The house is built in an uphill slope, with the entrance and a little garden in the front, and the bedrooms at the back, protected by the summer heat and the winter chills. The wise building choices of past generations, offer a fresh environment during day and night, with rooms and patios protected by double stone walls.

The house features three double-bed bedrooms and one children bedroom with an asymmetric double-decker bed (double below, single up) and can sleep comfortably eight (8) people at any time. In addition, three folding beds, a double air-mattress, or a baby-box bed can be deployed easily, in the bedrooms or the second living room, sleeping quite comfortably up to 12 people.

The house consists of several functional areas:

The large main living room, the "portego", features the original late-19th and early-20th furniture from the family, under a majestic hand-made wood ceiling. Century-old furniture incudes two chest drawers, a round dining table and a traditional wooden sofa. These are coupled to a modern sofa, coffee table and a dining table in a multi-functional room, that provides access to all other areas.

A large kitchen, featuring the original cooking fire place and clay pots stands, blends to a modern kitchen with both gas and ceramic cooking plates and an oven; a large refrigerator, a Nespresso coffee machine, an ice cream machine, a toaster, a water boiler, and others, complete a modern fully functionally kitchen. The kitchen is accessible both from the living room and the garden.

The two "old bedrooms" (the master bedroom and the children room) are accessible through the living room. They each have independent access to a bathroom organised in two independent areas (featuring a double wash basin, a shower, and a toilet). The children room offers a double-decker bed, in a unique design which provides access to the upper bed with a wooden staircase, that also leads to a third bedroom upstairs. That third bedroom has access to a large veranda with a view all the way to the south and north coasts, which also leads to the small vegetable garden in the back of the house. It features century-old clay pots (used now as flower pots) and an iron railing reproducing century old signature-design of the old house.

The "guest apartment" has access through the living room and independent access from the outside. It keeps many original features, both in the second living room (which features a small cooking plate and refrigerator) and in the spacious bedroom (including an old cupboard). The living room can comfortably host two (or even three) folding beds (which are available at any time), if you need them. The guest apartment has access to its own fully independent bathroom.

The "breakfast patio" is an area protected by three walls and a modern tent, making it perfect for any time of the day, but for us is the breakfast place. Accessible from all other areas without bothering anyone who wishes to sleep longer, it has direct access to the kitchen and offers the perfect morning chill and often breathtaking view of the sunset.

The "fabrique" was the old house workshop: it still features α giant milling stone and a wine press. Under two sycamore trees, you will find our large stone-and-wood table (which can sit comfortably 14 people ... nut has accommodated at times as many as 22 guests! ), a cahir hammock, a low table and bench for the kids, md a marble wash-basin.

The "little garden" is in the front of the house, and features many young trees (planted between 2012-2014) which - depending on the season - will offer oranges, lemons, mandarins, plums, pears, and an endless supply of ... fresh chillies.

The "back garden" is a little strip of land in the back, which produces cherry tomatoes, courgettes, aubergines, cucumbers (all summer), and both white and red grapes (in the late summer).

The “big garden” is a new acquisition in the back, a garden in development.

Next to the house entrance is the "Ontas" or the "new house" as my father used to call it. As this is the newest-built part of the complex (early 20th century) it has been in less danger of falling apart, and has not been renovated yet. It is used as a workshop and storage space., which we hope to be renovating soon as a second guest apartment ...

The house can be kept cool in the heat and warm in the cold, as the double stone walls combined with high quality modern roof isolation material, double-glass windows and the high-ceiling (close to 4m) offer high standards in heat isolation. Managing the airflow (closing doors during the day and opening after sunset in the summer), together with the smart orientation at the foot of the hill, allow keeping an excellent cool and fresh atmosphere inside the house, even in the warmest weather. However, we gave in and installed three "inverter" air-conditioning units in 2017; these can keep all bedrooms artificially cool, if you prefer. The main living room has no cooling (the bedroom air-condition can help cooling it though) but features a large modern wood stove, which together with three mobile radiators and two air-blow heaters, can be used to keep the house warm in winter. The kitchen features a ceiling fan. Warm water is available all over the house.

What a lovely place!
We had a wonderful stay in this traditional very spacious house and felt home right away. The house is beautifully renovated with a lot of charm and an eye for detail. The stone walls keep the house cool even when temperatures outside climb above 30°C. The beautiful kitchen has everything we needed, and even features a traditional fireplace for cooking. And the bathroom has a homely feel with a cobblestone floor. The best thing - there is plenty of space for the whole family to enjoy! We had breakfast underneath the mulberry tree in the patio, and dinner a large table in the traditional dining room. We also enjoyed the big garden with several seating areas and lots of trees and spaces for children to play. Surrounding the house is a quiet village with few tourists and mostly locals. The mountains in the backdrop start right behind the house and make for some great hikes. From the mountaintop church you can even see the sea to the north and south at the same time! The main square of the village is only a 2 min walk away as well, and there are three restaurants that serve local food (some of them speak English). We used the house as a base to explore places all the way to the east and center of Crete. The host had recommendations for restaurants scattered across the area, and day trips which were wonderful. It is a short drive to Ierapetra, where there are more options for dining, shopping and party. If we come back to Crete, we will definitely stay at this place again!

Awesome house, quiet village
The house is impressive. It is renovated traditional one, made of large stone blocks and large wooden beams. The architecture is smart, two courts with access from several parts of the house, several terraces bedrooms and living rooms, allowing to gather all guests in same places, and to anyone to find a quiet place to rest apart from the group when needed. The walls (and the architecture) keep the house fresh, you just need to keep south windows/doors closed during the afternoon and open everything in the evening, we never had to use the air conditioning system. Furnitures and decoration are tasteful, it is not a house dedicated to the rent, it actually belongs to people living there, which make a huge difference for us. We were positively surprised by Kato Chorio. You will never find this village in any book. No tourist, just locals. There is a lovely central place in the shade of large trees where you can eat, drink ouzo, and play tavli. Do not expect night clubs, loud music, or tourist restaurants. The village is in between south and north coasts, you can easily explore both, and drive east. We manage to visit most of eastern sites in a week without driving too long. There is a (very) small "supermarket" and a bakery, you can drive less than 10mn to go to Ierapetra and find meat, fish or anything else. Don't hesitate, it is the house and village you are looking for.

Perfect house and village experience
We are family of four who were interested in touring Eastern Crete and with a good house as our base. For this purpose this rental was absolutely perfect. The house is an old restored stone house. Spacious, coolish, well-equipped, and full of architectural details that makes you think that this is a 'Kodak moment'. Outside there are several shaded terraces, a roof terrace, and a garden with lemon, pomegranate, chili and plumbs. The village Kato Chorio is small but with a handfull of good tavernas - we warmly recommend the middle one owned by 'Tula'. The location half-way between the northern and southern coast makes it a perfect base for exploring beaches and sites at both coasts.

(ambiance détendue assurée, cuisine familiale, on recommande!). On recommande +++

Lovely house, patio & garden, great location!
We had a wonderful time in this beautiful, recently renovated house in Kato Chorio, a small lovely and quiet village. The house is very spacious, very clean and well equipped with modern amenities, and perfectly located. The house has beautiful classical features and a great patio and garden where you can hear the birds sing. We are a family of four but the house has plenty of space for more people. The small village square is just a few steps away and has very nice local restaurants. The landlord, who lives in the area, is very friendly and helpful and gave us lots of suggestions. A few kilometers to the south, Ierapatra offers more restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, shops, and ferries to the island of Chrisi, which has beautiful sandy beaches. The house is a good starting point for activities on Crete. We particularly enjoyed swimming/snorkeling at the beaches of Achlia, Achlia Fotia, Myrtos, Istro, a hike in Sarakinas Gorge, or drive via Thripti to Makry-Gialos. Highly recommended!

I was born and raised in Greece, but I work abroad since 1992 (Germany, England, France and the Netherlands). I am a Principal Investigator in a comprehensive cancer research centre and a Professor at the University of Utrecht. I grew up in Athens, but had almost all my childhood vacation at this house at Crete. I bought out all relatives in 2009 and since 2011 we have been renovated the place. We moved in for our first summer in 2012, and kept completing the renovation details. Now the house is fairly complete - albeit you will see missing details in decoration - and we have decided it's time to open it up. My goal is to create an income independent from my real job, that will allow us to maintain the house and expand the renovation to the two-floor "Ontas" ...

Why they chose this property

Its the family house, bought in 1879 by my step great-grandfather; when my grandmother died, my father with his father and his older sister and moved in to that house that belonged to the family of my father's new step-mother. After the death of my grandparents, the house belonged to the six brothers and sisters. My aunt Marina lives there for nearly all her life, most of the time alone along the cold winters, and fully surrounded by nephews and nieces of all ages in the summers. After all brothers and sisters died, I bought the shares from all of my cousins and renovated the place.

What makes this property unique

Being equidistant from both the north and south seas of Crete, it offers access to majestic beaches. Located near a hill at a slight elevation (200m) makes the place way cooler than properties near the sea. Plenty of restaurants in a walking distance allow you to have quite evenings in the house or by the local village square. Some of the areas best restaurants (Napoleon, Mermigas, Monastiraki, Mikri Vouli, and others) and a a few minutes away by car.
