Each house has a large living-dining room, 2 or 3 twin bed rooms, 1 master double bed room, a fully equipped kitchen and 2 or 3 bathrooms. Central heating and TV cable are included and the houses are cleaned twice a week. The 14x6m pool is available for guests. fantastic holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at Casa do Zimbro, myself, my husband, and my children ages 19, 14 and 12. thoroughly enjoyed it. The house was extremely spacious and clean, especially the two bathrooms. It was great to have the place cleaned halfway through our stay, too. The views from the house were wonderful and we could see the pool from our window. The pool itself and the area around it were amazing, beautifully kept and also very clean. We enjoyed cycling around the estate on the mountain bikes provided, but didn't manage to fit horse-riding in. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the fact that we did not speak Portuguese nor they English, was not a problem.

We visited Lisbon by car in about 30 minutes, and had trips out to local beaches which were lovely and varied.

The Best Kept Secret in Portugal !

  • 5 of 5

Friends in Switzerland where we live, first told us about Casa de Calhariz, this new tourist destination that has recently opened.

They told us about these restored houses in the center of a large country estate owned by the same family for many centuries and what a great find it had been.

We decided to follow their advice and go for a holiday.

The information on the site was totally accurate and we actually saw every single beautifull bit of scenery that the photos on the site display.

The house was very spacious, clean and well furnished.

The staff were very welcoming and the owners could not have been more charming.

The portuguese are famous for their hospitality and Calhariz must be one of the best examples.

We slept like babies and woke to the soft chirping of birds. Pure bliss.

We spent mornings on invigorating walks and visiting the sites in the area and once we went for a drive on a horse drawn carriage around the grounds. They actually have their own breed of horses here.

Siesta time with crickets gently singing in the background was divine and the afternoons were spent at the beach.

At sunset we headed back home for a last dip in the cristal clear swimming pool.

For cocktail hour we found that the cheese produced on the farm proved to be the best apero. A complete success together with freshly backed bread, olives and lovely local wines.

Quinta da Bacalhoa and Jose Maria da Fonseca were just perfect.

On occasion we tried the restaurants at a village called Foreira on the way to Espichel. The atmosphere of these places was simple and unpretentious. Fresh fish from the market and mouthwatering seafood are the thing to have. Simply Excellent!

This area has many architectural sites of interest, some are famous and others less known such as the church of St Simeon at Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, a little jewell of the xvii century we happen to come upon, with exquisite columns and arches and the walls entirelly covered in beautifully coloured tiles

After such delicious days the evenings were absolutely magical with a million stars dotting the sky, the gentle breeze of the wind on the trees , and the promise of the next day just as rewarding just as perfect.

A big Thank you to all at Casa de Calhariz who showed us such a warm welcome and to our friends who shared their discovery of this great place!

Anspruch und Wirklichkeit

  • 3 of 5
