The large apartment is on the first floor of a large stone house which has it's history dating back to the 17th century. It comprises, one double bedroom and one twin bedroom allowing for a maximum of 4 people. There is a large private terrace leading off from the main bedroom which overlooks the village and the hills beyond. There is a table and seating for 6 on this terrace. The kitchen towels, bed linen and personal towels are provided, but not the swimming towels. It is one of two units on the same property which allows the possibility of hiring both for a maximum of 6 people. Ideal for families or friends holidaying together. The kitchen/living room is big enough to use as a communal room if renting both apartments. The swimming pool is situated on a lower terrasse in the garden and is 9m x 4.5m & 1m50 deep, with steps at the shallow end. Plenty of space for sun bathers and also for those who wish to be in the shade. The decking area has a fridge and space to sit.


About the property

Very old stone house in hamlet

We have two self-catering gites leading from an interior courtyard, each with its own private, raised terrace overlooking the village and hills beyond. Availability all year. The small gite with all amenities is available as an extra space to be included when there is a larger group of people, maximum 6. Ideal for your family or friends wishing to holiday together. Portable bar-b-que available and table and chairs on each balcony.

The swimming pool is situated on a lower terrace of the garden. and is 9 metres long 4.5 metres wide 1.5 metres deep with steps at one end. Plenty of space to lounge & with a shaded decking area with a fridge to keep your drinks cool. The village offers all amenities, a ten minutes walk to buy fresh bread and croissants. Other shops include, butchers, epicerie, tabac, bank, chemist, restaurants and pizzeria. A bank with cash point, tennis courts for hire. 2 roadside cafes plus a restaurant called "131".

The garden leads directly into miles of peaceful chestnut and pine forest, ideal for ramblers & off road cyclists. There are well marked walks around the village with lots of historical interest, eg The Lavoirs and The Dolmens.

Walkers & Ramblers: St Paul le Jeune is situated on a geological fault which shows significantly in the vegetation. One side of the valley is calcium where the Dolmens are sited & the vegetation is typically stunted oak trees, juniper and box bushes and there are cultivated olive trees. On the other side of the valley where the village has developed, it is sandstone & until 50 years ago the hillside was dominated by chestnut trees. These were cultivated for the sweet chestnuts but after they became diseased & there was a decline in the working population the land gradually became dominated by pines. The chestnut trees still exist but are no longer cultivated commercially here. The pine forest provides a home for wild boar, small deer, squirrels and tracks for ramblers! The village of Banne, has the ruins of a chateau, the top part of which was destroyed by fire the year after the French Revolution. At this site there is an orientation table. There is a restaurant called "The Auberge de Banne" in the village square, 5kms from St Paul.

Walking: There are at least 6 walks leading directly from the house varying in length from 1 to 4 hrs. You do not have to drive anywhere. There are many routes to follow of varying degrees of difficulty. Two walks through the village and into the forest are historic in that they show the lavoirs ,(old communal laundry basins) with sources of water which were used until the early 20th century, at which time the houses were supplied with piped water. Another route takes you further back in history to see the Dolmens which date back 4000 or 5000 years. In the printed guide it says the dolmens were built at the time of the pyramids but are,' "more modest". This route traverses the limestone on the opposite side of the valley to our property & there are several burial sites, plus a shepherds shelter. The limestone can also reveal fossils. Another walk leading directly from the house climbs to a small chapel, St Sebastien which was built by the commune of Courry as a thanksgiving for having escaped the plague in the 14th century.

Antique Market: During the weekend of Easter and around the bank holiday 15th of August every year there is a well known Antique's Market 'Marché de Brocante' held at Barjac which is just 20kms from St Paul le Jeune. People from all over Europe and beyond converge on this very attractive town to see the streets full of old furniture and antiques (bric-a-brac) of all descriptions.

Restaurants nearby well worth a visit. "La Table des Oliviers" on warm evenings sitting under the trees and if you don't want to drive you can walk to it along a track avoiding the roads. It takes 15 minutes avoiding the main road. Directions are available plus torches for the return journey. Another called the "Auberge des Enclos" on the road leading to St Ambroix takes a slightly longer walk 25 minutes to reach that one. Also "L'Olivier de Païolive" on the road to Les Vans. that also has tables under the trees. There is a roadside restaurant in the village called the "131" a 10 minute walk from the house. It is always best to book in advance at all the restaurants.

Colin and Jill

We both grew in up Huntingdonsire and later spent several years living in north London where Colin was studying at Hornsey Art College. We lived in Lancashire before moving to France in 1989. The property was a near ruin and needed a lot of work to make it habitable and we did it ourselves with more than a little help from family and friends. Having sold our house in England we intended to make our home in France. We have three children, the youngest of whom came with us to start a new life here. He was just under 11years of age. Our other two children remained in the UK to continue their education. They came to stay with us and helped with the manual work during holidays and evidence is here of their creativity. We have tried to keep the feel of the old stone building and the entrances to the two holiday gites open up into comfortable homes which we like to keep in good order and feeling cosy.

We did not know this region of France before coming on holiday in the summer of 1987. We were staying with friends and enjoying our summer holiday but we became curious about the area and started looking in estate agents windows and were surprised at how cheap some properties were. We eventually plucked up the courage to go in and ask. We were shown several which didn't seem right but this one, which the estate agent thought was too much of a ruin, had the right 'feel' about it and with no real idea of how we would plan our future we decided it was too good an opportunity to let it pass. We signed and sealed the deal within a few days and returned to England to think about what we had done!

What makes this apartment unique

The initial feelings we had for the building are also expressed by visitors when they arrive. The old wooden gate with it's worn iron ring handle. The huge stones in the walls. The pathway through to the garden beyond. The garden is terrassed and we have developed it over the years to create a grassed area, a fruit and vegetable plot and finally a swimming pool which is surrounded by bushes and walls which give much need shade in the hot summer months and privacy. There is a wooden decking area for added space to relax. The village is close enough to buy all that is needed and the pretty local walks start from just outside the house. A vehicle is needed to explore the surrounding countrysde and market towns. The view from each of the balconies can be enjoyed whilst sipping a glass of wine and anticipating a meal!

St Paul is situated at the southern most point of the Ardèche to the West of the Rhone valley and on the edge of the Cevennes and Languedoc Roussillon regions, enjoying a Mediterranean climate.

On the D104, 35km south of Aubenas, 28km north of Alès. The nearest airports are Nimes, Montpellier and Marseille. The nearest TGV station is Avignon, at 90km. The nearest train station is at Alès.and we are 13kms from both towns of St Ambroix & Les Vans where there are markets and supermarkets.The village is situated between two geological areas, on one side the terrain is calcium where you can hunt for fossils and follow the path showing ancient dolmens. On the other side it is sandstone with forests and paths for walking & cycling. There is canoeing on the Ardeche, the Ceze and the Chassezac, all local rivers. In the village you can discover the old Lavoirs (stone basins for washing laundry) or walk further to visit the Chapel of St Sebastien and the ancient Dolmens.

Other Activities: Swimming pool, tennis, historic walks, mountain biking, canoeing/kayaking on the Ardeche or other rivers, river swimming. Ideal for walking or biking holidays. 15 minutes away by car there is a bike hire shop, both road and off road bikes

Ryan Air offer low fare air tickets from Stansted airport (London) Luton & Liverpool to Nimes (our nearest airport) and Montpellier airport. Easyjet fly to Nice from Liverpool & Belfast. Air France fly to Marseille from London. The nearest access to an auto-route is at Montelimar Nord and the nearset TGV station is Avignon or Nimes. Car hire available from all. airports and TGV stations. Our changeover days are Saturday to Saturday but we can be flexible about this during the months October to May. A minimum of 7 day booking. Please contact us by email or phone. We live on the premises and are available at all times for help or advice. Arrival time after 4pm. Departure time before 10am. The swimming pool is available during the summer season and is shared. Please bring your own swimming towels. If you forget we can provide towels at a charge of 3 euros per towel. Glasses & glass bottles are not to be taken around the pool. There is a shaded decking area with a fridge at your disposal

Rustic and full of character

Les Monedes is a beautiful place to spend some time. We stayed in the larger gite with our two boys and would love to go back. The apartment has a large terrace for dining with a lovely view across the valley. Beds comfortable and kitchen very well equipped. A short walk through a lovely garden takes you to a secluded and good size pool. Jill and Colin are fantastic hosts, staying out of the way so you feel the place is yours but there to help you with anything you might need. The area is between the Cevennes and the Ardeche gorge with plenty of places to explore, river swimming, canoeing and great walks. Thoroughly recommended.

Perfect place for a relaxing holiday

This a beautifully restored gite, equipped with everything you need for a restoring holiday. Well equipped kitchen , comfortable beds, tastefully decorated, a terrace for outside dining with a view across the town and a secluded pool. Colin and Jill were the perfect hosts, welcoming and informative about the locality. If you like walking, climbing and swimming in rivers you'll find plenty to do in the locality. (Just watch out for the speed traps on the D104.)

A flavour of old France with modern amenities

This was our fourth visit in over twenty years. It has been some time since our last stay, but when we arrived, the quiet and peaceful ambience brought back many happy memories of our previous visits. As Jill and Colin are on site, their helpful advice and experience is readily available to smooth the transition from work to holiday.

Whether your interests are just lazing by the pool, exploring historic sites or more energetic pastimes on foot or cycle, there is plenty to see and do in the locale.

Many of our friends and relatives have stayed here over the years and the fact that we keep coming back is testament to the quality of the accommodation and the friendliness of the owners.

Sixteen years later

We first visited Colin and Jill when our son was just six months old and we both liked the area and the local sights... which led us to return, albeit 16 years later! The wait was worth it: the pool was enjoyed by both our children (now 16 and 13) and the continual days of sunshine made for a great couple of weeks. We found that there wasn't time enough to do everything: it's an ideal site for peace and quiet yet within a stone's through is plenty of activity; whilst a ride of half an hour opens up all sorts of options. Colin and Jill were as charming as ever and extremely helpful: nothing was too much bother for them and they have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the region, and are always able to advise. In short, comfortable, rural accommodation with all the modern trappings, such as Wi-Fi. We'll be back...

Cosy and comfortable apartment

cosy, comfortable and clean. peaceful setting but only a short walk away from the village. Colin and Gill were friendly and helpful and always there to help, but never invasive.

We had a lovely holiday and would definitely recommend it to friends and family. Great restaurants nearby, medieval villages, vineyards, good walks and great cycling for if and when you became bored with the pool and pretty gardens

Happy holidays

We have stayed in the large appartment twice (in 2007 and 2010) and the small appartment once (in 2009). This gite is probably the best one we have stayed in in France. The area is stunningly beautiful and there are not many tourists locally. We have invariably found the holiday relaxing and the gites are good for adults and children of all ages. It is my teenage daughters' favourite villa (the wifi helps here but they also love the pool) as well as the adults too! The main benefits are the facilities and stunning views but also Jill and Colin. I am always somewhat reticent about staying in a villa where the owners live on site as overattentiveness can prevent a relaxing holiday. It is a fine balance between that and not being available when there are questions. Jill and Colin strike that fine balance perfectly and they are one of the main reasons that this is the only gite we regularly return to in France.

My partner has added: The apartment is very comfortable, clean and well equipped with plenty of space for everyone. We enjoyed many meals (and drinks!) on the large terrace from which there is a fabulous view of the village and hills. We also enjoyed many hours in and beside the lovely pool and felt very ‘at home’. Jill and Colin are extremely welcoming and helpful and we have recommended the apartments to friends. The location is great with a number of restaurants, bars and shops nearby.
