WHAT YOU GET: 500m2 spacious, stylish, comfortable and private 5-star accommodation for up to 12 guests + heated pool in secluded 3-acre park, in sunny, gastronomic Occitanie, SW France.

Large, luxury house in South-West France, Manoir Les Gaillardoux is an exceptional rental property for lovers of space, comfort and privacy who get together in large family groups to enjoy long summers by the private heated pool. It also appeals to those whose shorter holiday breaks consist of extended weekends outside the main season.

All six double bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and wcs, something you don’t often find in larger French rental properties accommodating up to 12 guests. The bedrooms can be configured with large double beds or two singles, according to individual requirements. These practical facilities helped the Manoir to win the coveted five-star rating from the French Tourist Ministry, one of only five properties in the region to achieve this distinction

Attention to comfort and privacy applies throughout the property with nearly 500m2 of internal space, where 4 reception rooms offer unusual opportunities to escape the throng and perhaps enjoy a quiet conversation over a drink with people you don’t meet very often, play pool with friends or read a good book from the extensive library of French and English titles.

The inside of the house remains agreeably cool in summer within its 70 cm thick stone walls, an environmentally-friendly alternative to air conditioning. Outside the main season, individually controllable central heating ensures comfort in every room whilst water heating is strategically placed so that everyone can have a shower at the same time without running out of hot water. A water softener is installed, so those who are sensitive to hard water need have no concerns.

Although this is an elegant, classical 18th century, stone-built manor house, full of character and quirks, we have allowed no compromise to modern living standards, style and convenience. Free Orange wi-fi, which normally runs at a download speed of 4.0Mbps, flat screen TV with a Sonos sound system, DVD player, and several Bose radio CD players, one linked to wi-fi global radio. Mobile phones work well here as the microwave tower is 500m away.

Available from Saturday 02 June 2018.

This is where extended family groups covering three generations can get together for special celebrations and enjoy the house and park throughout the long days and warm nights of June, July, August and September.

The south-facing terrace looks out over 3 acres of secluded parkland, across field to the low hills beyond. You will find many different types of mature trees, including figs, pomegranates, cherries, plums, apples and pears. Later in the season, walnuts and olives can be harvested along with sloes for homemade aperitif preparation. The herb garden, a step outside the kitchen, supplies quantities of rosemary and thyme if you like to cook, and the local lamb goes particularly well with them.

If you do choose to cook in the semi-professional kitchen, you have gas and induction hobs, two ovens, American fridge/freezer/icemaker/watercooler, a dishwasher, plenty of granite workspace and a high level of utensils and food processing equipment.

The laundry room has two Miele washing machines and a condenser dryer for rare days when you can’t dry clothes outside.

There is enough room for small groups to eat in the kitchen or you can pass the results of your cooking straight out of the window to the large teak dining table on the terrace, shaded by a pergola. Guests say they spend most of their time on the terrace in the morning, then indoors on the hottest days and in the pool later in the day. The heated pool is sterilised with salt rather than chlorine, so is kinder to the skin and eyes.

The younger generation may ask what they can do in the country. Here, they tend to swim or splash in the pool, even in the heat of the day, or cycle around the area on the quiet roads.

There are enough loungers around the pool for all 12 guests to soak up the sun, and plenty of garden tables, chairs and parasols. After a swim, some may venture out to explore a variety of physically demanding pursuits or educational opportunities which the nearby area offers, such as parachute jumping, private flying, karting, water sports, and rock climbing. There is a sports centre with tennis courts 10 km away. Dinosaur tracks, caves and fossils are very popular with budding archaeologists.

Parents, on the other hand, may be more interested to attend local street markets, gastronomic restaurants and folkloric village events, visit a vineyard or enjoy a beer whilst sitting on the shaded terrace of a café, watching the world go by. It is also possible to drive a short distance through lovely undulating countryside on almost empty roads, for a round of golf in a wonderful landscape at a club where the family can re-join you at the clubhouse for lunch.

When you return to the Manoir you can enjoy a glass of local aperitif or Pernod with ice, read a book or doze in the shade of the silver poplars. If you a nature lover, you may be lucky to catch a glimpse of shy golden orioles flitting between the trees. When it’s dinner time, you can stay outside and cook on the gas barbecue or, if you are feeling lazy, you can have a full meal prepared by a local chef. Then, after a convivial dinner, you can sit out and count the stars appearing in the magnificent southern sky. Outdoor dining is after all, one of life’s great luxuries.

About Josiane Wileman

We spent 4 years looking for our dream home in South West France., so we know the area well. Our intention was to find a small Chateau or Manoir combining an authentic regional look and with potential to become a secondary home matching our vision of comfort, style, space and privacy. The idea was that we would inhabit it part of the year and let it to like-minded guests during the summer. We opted for a manoir because of its more human scale and greater adaptability to modern life. The South West of France was a favourite for us, because of its relatively sparse population, the gastronomy we knew well and loved, the conviviality of the locals, dramatic landscapes and of course the sunny weather!

We had about given up finding our dream property when we found Manoir Les Gaillardoux in the autumn of 2005. The sale was completed at the end of November 2005 with Christmas looming close. So, there we were, with our future dream house in need of a major refurbishment.

Now, the task was to put the vision to the test! Time to plan and organise the restoration... An adventure which ended well when the vision became reality in April 2006!

It was an exciting time for us - and for every one of the 17 artisans who worked brilliantly as a team and Francoise, their gifted leader! We set 21 April as the Inauguration date, when everyone who had contributed to the restoration would be invited with their spouse or companion to show what they had accomplished. We also invited several prominent personalities from the region who had facilitated the project. There was an opportunity for everyone to shine ... or hide. The last chandelier was installed on 20 April. The furniture was in place. On D-Day, the caterers were ready with the buffet dinner and the champagne was cool. We welcomed 84 guests on that day and many artisans shed an emotional tear. We had met our goal - on time! Bravo to all our supporters!

Josiane Wileman purchased this chateau / country house in 2005

Why Josiane Wileman chose Montdoumerc

Over the past 10 years, we have had the immense pleasure of welcoming wonderful guests from the UK, The Netherlands, USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Belgium... They tell us that they have fond memories of their holidays at the Manoir and in our region.

For instance, from Debbie, an American architect who lives and works in Paris and London, and wrote:

"A landmark house in one of the most beautiful parts of France! Le Manoir des Gaillardoux was a spectacular point of departure for the birthday week in September. The house is an amazing piece of architecture as all the architects and designers in the group agreed. It was a

perfect setting for my friends from around the globe to gather and share a week of cooking; sampling; visiting; celebrating and thoroughly enjoying each other’s company in this wonderful region full of historical and natural sites to visit; fabulous restaurants, products and wine to sample and a gracious lifestyle to experience.

On arrival, we were met by the Manoir’s very gracious house manager, who introduced us to the house and all of its wonders, the handsome grounds; the meticulously designed accommodations and the extremely high standard of equipment at our disposal during our stay. No detail has been overlooked in the planning of this

holiday house and a stay here feels like coming home. The house offers many spacious areas for guests to gather or to seek a moment of solitude. The pool area and the terrace off the dining room and kitchen were favourites for most, the sumptuous stone stairwell was mine.

Many thanks to the owners who went out of their way to assist in making this a very special memory. Being very exacting, I was extremely pleased as were all of my guests. Le Manoir provided perfect accommodations, beautiful interiors, furnishings and outdoor spaces - a wonderful setting for this week of celebration and the formal dinner party. Merci infiniment pour le Manoir and all of our wonderful memories.”

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our Guests tell us what they highly valued:

“Space and style”

"Designed for gracious living”

“Private but not isolated”

“ The Manoir’s team offer a warm welcome and are always on hand to help”.

We personally value the wide view of the sky from the South facing terrace, which is ideal for star-gazing on a warm summer night, the convenience and comfort of the heated salt-water swimming pool, which is usually open from mid-May into November, the well-stocked library in the billiard room, the ambiance created by the log fires in the stone fireplace of the dining room - and the overall feeling of brightness, space and privacy in the house and the park .

18th century, classical Manoir Les Gaillardoux offers you Elegance, style, comfort, privacy and space in the heart of the Quercy region. A legendary land steeped in cultural heritage. Where ancient villages and medieval architecture harmoniously nestle in a spectacular landscape. A region renowned for its fine local gastronomy and Cahors AOC vineyards.

Plenty to see, plenty to do. Something for everyone:

The region around Manoir Les Gaillardoux is a lively centre of activities based around rivers, pre-historic caves, gastronomy, vineyards, villages and history. Whether you seek relaxation or adrenaline-filled activities, the Manoir and its surrounding area offer you both.

Once you have booked Manoir Les Gaillardoux we help you get a taste of the many things you could do or see when holidaying here, and some of the advantages of choosing this as your French home for the duration of your séjour in the Quercy.

We hope you will share your hosts’ fascination for our beloved Quercy and surrounding areas and take with you your own memories and photos.

If you need help organising trips, activities and restaurant bookings, or to celebrate a special birthday or a private event during your stay at the Manoir, we will be pleased to help.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house is exceptionally beautiful. The furnishings and maintenance are impeccable and it is both elegant and comfortable. The owner went out of her way to help us with every aspect of our stay, and was exceptionally generous with her time in providing information about the house and area prior to and throughout our stay. In this region of France I cannot imagine a more perfect place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

Exquisite 5* Manoir in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

My husband and our family, 12 of us, spent our holiday here at this elegant and luxury 5*Manor house.

The location is set not too far from several local villages, where you can buy everything you need from the local artisans. The nearest larger town, is approx. 18KM away.

The house is set in a beautiful quiet location surrounded by fields and not overlooked at all.

We were extremely impressed by the cleanliness and the facilities of the Manor itself. Each bedroom was large with an ensuite bathroom and plenty of space for us all. The kitchen is every cooks dream. Spacious and fully equipped to tailor for your every need. If you don’t fancy cooking, the owners can arrange for a chef to come and cook for you.

We loved the heated pool and the pool table and the occasional game of boules. The owners prepared a pack for us with information on the area so we didn’t have to look for good restaurants or things to do, it was all in the pack. Really helpful!

If you are after a little adrenaline, close by there is a Karting track worth going to or taking a micro-light aircraft from Lalbenque (6KM) away to view the area from the sky or even skydive.

In Cahor you can hire bikes and take boat trips. We went on a boat trip down the River Lot, worth every penny to see the beautiful views.

I would highly recommend Manoir Les Guillardoux for a family or a group of friends looking for a combination of relaxation, culture and adrenaline! Thank you to Bob and Josiane (the owners) for helping making this holiday great for us all.

Relaxed, atmospheric location shared with friends

  • 5 of 5

From arrival to departure the house, facilities, and the location never failed to impress. It is equipped and appointed to a very high specification. We have many happy memories of convivial evenings enjoying the ambience and tranquillity of the surrounding. A perfect place to relax and unwind. When we wanted to be more active there are plenty of fascinating places in the area to keep us entertained, too many and too varied to list here but the information provided by the owners is comprehensive and accurate. We will be back!

Exceeded all expectations

  • 4 of 5

We have visited the area before and wanted somewhere special to stay for a special celebration. We certainly feel like we found a hidden gem. The Manoir Les Gaillardoux is a beautiful property set in stunning grounds. The Interior is exquisitely furnished in classic French style with some wonderful features. Superb modern ensuite bathrooms and spacious rooms throughout. The pool is perfect and surrounded by traditional stone walls and a fabulous pigeonnier. Our host were very welcoming and informative with great suggestions for sight seeing, activities and the obligatory wine tasting. Our stay was too short so we will be planning another visit as soon as we can.

A Stylish property with character and charm.

  • 5 of 5

We attended several events here at the Manoir organised by the owners, Josiane and Bob, who couldn't be better hosts. We had a tour of the house which has been renovated and decorated beautifully. I have become very fussy over the years about where I stay and the standard of accommodation, but I would have no hesitation in booking this lovely property should we want to be looking to holiday in this region again or recommend it to friends and family. There is much to explore in the area and I understand it is a cyclists paradise.

Owner's Response: Thank you Tracey. As yours was an extended weekend break, we hope that you will find time to drift down here in your classic car and explore the almost empty roads before sitting down to a glass or two of Cahors wine and a fine dinner.

Looking for a relaxing or an active holiday in Occitanie? Or a bit of both?

Manoir Les Gaillardoux and the Quercy region combine to offer you the best of both. The scenic Causses du Quercy Blanc are on an elevated limestone plateau with extended views over a rolling, hilly and wooded landscape.

The Quercy region is one of the most sparsely populated in France and is well-known for its picturesque medieval villages, many of which have shops, cafés, restaurants and traditional street markets. If you have a sophisticated palate you will find much to delight you in the local delicacies, such as the rare black truffle and the goose and duck foie gras which can be enjoyed at several restaurants within easy reach of the Manoir. The Lot is also well known for the “black wines” of Cahors, Malbec AOC. Most of the local chateaux and vineyards welcome visitors for guided tours and wine tasting.

But if you decide to look around…

Outdoor pursuits and adventure sports abound for adrenaline junkies such as:

• Parachute jumping, 5km away

• Piloting, 5 km

• Karting, 5km

• Horse riding, various

• Rock climbing, several

Or for slightly more gentle activities:

• Golf, 15km

• Archaeology, 30 km

• Caving, various

• Canoeing, 16km

• Fishing 3km

Once you venture out, in search of local culture, start with Cahors!

A Brief History:

In 1316, the Cadurcien, Jacques Duèze, became pope under the name of John XXII. He founded the university and promoted religion and commerce to attract the elites of the Avignon court.

In the 13th century, the power of the count-bishops became increasingly challenged and the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) put an end to this period of prosperity.

The city has retained a rich medieval heritage: a domed cathedral and its cloisters, hundreds of medieval houses of all kinds, not to mention the iconic Valentré bridge.

Cahors is one of the 25 Great Sites in the Midi-Pyrenees/Occitanie which underpin the identity of this beautiful region and contribute to its influence far beyond our borders.

Set on a bend in the river in the majestic scenery of the Lot valley, Cahors is a town of art and history, a gift for the explorer.

From the cathedral square with its farmers’ markets and associated curiosities, you can make your way through narrow side streets, walk up the Boulevard Gambetta, look in on some interesting small shops or stop at the café terraces and take your time to select a restaurant for lunch or dinner. The capital of the Lot department combines a southern atmosphere with history and food to seduce lovers of heritage and the good life and is a great place to soak up the atmosphere of South-West France.

Surrounding villages

The Quercy boasts a rich architectural heritage and a wide range of cultural activities: spectacular cliff-top fortresses and historical remains; the 15th C Chateau de Cieurac near Lalbenque, and the medieval cliff-top village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (elected one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France) to name but two, are less than a half-hour drive from the Manoir. The mainly limestone geology throughout Périgord and Quercy has produced a plethora of caves, many of which are open to the public, and some of which contain pre-historic cave-paintings.

We can organise a personalised Gastronomic Discovery Programme to suit your taste, or simply make recommendations.

The area around Manoir Les Gaillardoux is a lively centre of cultural, musical and sports activities based on historic buildings, rivers, pre-historic caves, gastronomy, vineyards, villages and history.

Our Welcome Book contains information to help our guests make the most of their holiday by sharing the local folklore and activities - and of course taste the local gastronomy and Malbec wines. Our team members are happy to help and advise.
