About the host
Hosted by Oscar Gutierrez
From Guatemala, I spent my childhood in Central America before moving to the United States at the age of 18 to study engineering. Having worked as an engineer for some years, my passion for photography took me to the University of Rochester, New York, where I studied photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Since then I have worked as a professional photographer which has taken me all over the world.
Since my first job as a photographer, at NASA in the US, I have travelled and lived for short periods in Latin America, the Caribbean, Israel, Canada, Mozambique – but since 1994 I have called South Africa home.
I have been lucky – since arriving in southern Africa I have documented a range of events and issues in politics, arts and culture, religion and other fields. I have been privileged to cover some significant political and cultural events in southern Africa, from the first general elections in South Africa in 1994, to Mozambique’s first general elections after the country’s independence from Portugal, to living conditions of Mozambican refugees in Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and South Africa.
When I am not working, my partner Michelle and I enjoy South African music, road trips around the country, spending time uncovering the vibrancy of this region.
Michelle and I moved to our Parkview home 4 years back and find that living in a peaceful and beautiful area mean we can relax and enjoy the birds, outdoor living – as well as the restaurant and café culture of the area and surrounds. Melville, a popular night spot, is a 20 minute walk from our home.
While renovating our home we spent 3 months living in one of our cottages and through that, we worked out what was needed to make it comfortable and convenient to live in. The renovation process was what prompted us to start offering the cottages to guests – as well as the fact that we thought the peace and quiet of the place would suit others. We have two independent cottages, both of which are renovated
