About this property

RURAL HOUSE , WITH SPECTACULAR VIEWS FROM LARGE TERRACE

Watch the dolphins on the ferry to La Gomera, then drive for 1 hr 10 mins through amazing woods and mountains, before arriving in Taguluche.
This picturesque village of 40 houses hidden away between the volcanic mountains, offers a quiet, beautiful escape for anyone wanting to relax.
At the end of the road, park the car and walk down a stone and grass footpath( uneven and not suitable for anyone who is not fit) that winds through the palm trees for 200 m before you reach SUNSET RETREAT. Our house is at 100 metres above sea level. Enjoy the completely private terrace, with sunbeds and outdoor shower, a lovely garden with mango trees and banana trees and rose bushes. The evening are long and the sunsets into the sea are amazing. The night sky offers stunning views (no light pollution here) and the Milky Way is easily spotted.
This old tomato packing house, completely renovated, offers a kitchen, large bathroom and a bright living room. From the footpath you continue down to the coast with a great headland with views along the entire coast. The village has a church, BBQ area, bar/restaurant, another rocky beach and many walks.
If you want to get away from it all, this is for you!!!!

A traditional house in a stunning setting
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sunset Retreat. The house had everything we needed for our 13 night stay. It was just as described on the website. The house was clean and well looked after. A minor problem encountered on arrival was quickly resolved by Barbara. The sunsets from the deck were amazing. Taguluche is a pretty, quite remote palm filled village and the views on the drive to reach it are wonderful. There are walks within the valley and plenty more on all parts of the island. La Gomera is a gem, whether relaxing is your aim or whether more physical pursuits are your thing.

Nice open plan bungalow in a quiet remote location
The name Sunset retreat says it all really. The building was originally a tomato packing workshop located on the terraces leading down to the sea below the village. At that time it was owned by the current owner's (Jose) grandfather. Barbara and Jose have lovingly updated the building to modern standards whilst maintaining a degree of the original building's features in the sensitive way that a family heritage would. The sun terrace has a footprint as large as the house itself. 50% shaded and 50% open, it catches the sun from mid morning through to incredible sunsets out to sea. Barbara is an excellent host and communicator and our whole booking process was very smooth. Take note of her advice for a trouble free stay especially with regard to travelling logistics (cars, ferries etc.) and travelling light with backpacks rather than heavy cases. The footpath down to the house is 400m long and classically Gomeran in it's steep rocky nature. You won't be able to wheel anything down. The house has a good washing machine, freezer, microwave, gas hob and refrigerator so you are really self contained. It is very comfortably furnished with a large double bed and two roll away single bed/sofas in an open plan bedsit area. Jose is an artist and art tutor and his work adorns the walls and sun terrace. There is a restaurant in the village approximately 1km from the house. It carries very basic shop items as well. Jolimar is the lady in charge and is very helpful. I would highly recommend a hire car as a necessity as the village is very remote from the main larger villages which have supermarkets (45 minute drive). The roads are winding and narrow but are excellently maintained. Parking is very easy at the top of the footpath. You need to be organised with shopping - but that process adds to the quiet solitude environment. We had no phone signal nor phone internet connection until driving 10 km out of the village although the village restaurant does have WiFi if you need it. 10 days without proved how intrusive those modern items are if you are looking to really get away from it. In summary, the November weather was kind to us and we enjoyed our stay immensely. La Gomera is a beautiful island with wonderfully welcoming locals. Thoroughly recommended!

Peaceful Christmas
A perfect stay at Sunset Retreat! The information about Sunset Retreat we received before we left, was complete. It's a very well equiped home: nothing has been missed. Every day breakfast at the terrace with a beautiful view at the ocean: every day another view. We loved the silence of the environment and did some lovely hikings in the Taguluche barranco. The walk to Valle Gran Rey via Arure is recommended (long but, beautiful). The lady of the bar/restaurant in the village Tagaluche is very nice and helpful. Normally we don't visit a holiday place twice, but this home could be an exeption, as we loved it toooooo much! :-)

Everything we were looking for
Sunset Retreat was perfect for what my wife and I wanted--a quiet place, relatively private (only 2-14 hikers going by a day), a complete kitchen and a view of the ocean. Sunset Retreat had all these--and more including beautiful art on the walls, very clean when we arrived, and well maintained. It also had replacement light bulbs, toilet tissue, etc. Barbara answered all our questions quickly and gave us recommendations for restaurants in the area. It turned out we didn't go out for meals much, preferring to stay home, cook for ourselves and watch the sunsets. Be aware it is a long drive from the harbor--1.5 hours minimum and an hour from Valle Gran Rey--a great place to shop, visit and eat. Because of the narrow roads we wanted to be back to the Retreat before sunset. It is also a bit of a hike from the parking place to the house--something the owners let us know--so you will get your exercise! If you want to get away from "it all"--including not having internet service--I fully recommend Sunset Retreat. We have already booked two weeks for next year! There is lots of hiking available all over the island. The area around Sunset Retreat is particularly rough, but not far away in the park there are much easier trails. By the way, we fully enjoyed the sunsets--each day was different. We even had the pleasure of the full moon. Weather was cool in the mornings and lovely in the afternoons--plan to dress in layers during the "winter". The view of the ocean at the end of the path was magnificent. On the last day we had the pleasure of a big storm--heavy winds and rain. The house stood solid and safe. We used the patio a lot. It had an open area for sunning ourselves and a covered area for reading and staying cool. (Sorry for the late review!)

Both of Jose's parents are from La Gomera. The old tomato packing house belonged to Jose's Grandparents. and he dedicated many summers reforming the house . I am from England, and came to teach English in Tenerife about 20 years ago. The first time I visited Taguluche, I fell in love with the house and the village. The magic of Sunset Retreat has stayed with me ever since.
