About this property

Quiet & Relaxing Cabin, Monthly, with Birds & Valley Views, Jungle, Waterfalls

This is a monthly rental of a cabin located on the side of a mountain with sweeping views of Tuis and the valley below. The cabin is located on a farm with lots of different birds, coffee, fruit trees, hummingbirds, waterfalls, jungle and fish ponds. The area is known for white water rafting on the Pacuare and Reventazon. The active Turrialba Volcano is nearby. There are canopy tours, Pre-Colombian ruins, a snake farm, coffee tours, nature reserves, and many more things to do nearby.

Attn: Bird Lovers... I have been told by serious birders that my farm has a lot of different types of birds and some are not common. My farm is located at the same elevation and about a mile away from Rancho Naturalista, where over 400 species of birds have been seen. Rancho also offers day passes to explore their place for birds.

The cabin has a living room with a TV, DVD and movies are available, includes a furnished kitchen for cooking, a porch with rocking chairs and hummingbird feeders, there are two double beds and bunk beds. There is wireless internet. A washer and dryer are available. The garage has space for one car.

Directions taking the bus: From San Jose go to the Turrialba bus station and take the express bus that leaves every hour, in 1 1/2 hours you are in Turrialba. Take the Tuis bus that leaves every hour and in 40 minutes you are in Tuis. There is a San Joaquin bus from Turrialba that brings you up to my driveway. At the start of my driveway is a large rock with a yellow cross painted on it. If you are on the San Joaquin bus tell the bus driver to let you off at Camino La Paulina.

Directions driving: From San Jose follow the signs to Cartago on Hwy 2 and continue thru town to Paraiso, from there follow the signs to Turrialba on Hwy 10. The road is paved and well maintained. Continue thru Turrialba on Hwy 10. You will cross the Reventazon River and start up the hill, turn right on the road to La Suiza, Hwy 232. Continue thru La Suiza to Tuis on Hwy 232. One half block past the bus garage turn left and start up the hill. Go three kilometers to where the road turns sharply to the right. There is a big boulder on the left with a yellow cross painted on it, turn left into my driveway. There are two driveways, take the level one. Go 2 blocks and you are here.

Great stay
We really enjoyed our stay in the hut. Steve was a great host. Excellent birding around the property and only a short distance from Rancho Naturalista, birdwatching heaven ($40 a day to walk the trails inc lunch). Would highly recommend for birders especially. Mike

Amazing!
We had a fantastic stay in Tuis in this cute cabina. The cabina itself has amazing views and everything you need to be comfortable. Steve is exceedingly generous and gave us free rein of the fruits and herbs he grows there alongside an interesting tour of his land and his projects. The cabina has gorgeous views from the balcony and is great for bird watching and relaxing. Alongside this Steve has a great knowledge of the local area and was able to provide us with hand drawn maps to the waterfall in Turrialba and local restaurants to eat. I have lived in Costa Rica for six years and was blown away by the beauty of this area. Make sure you visit the waterfall and the park of Guayabo and enjoy all the plants and flowers that the local people take such pride in. Gorgeous location, inspirational owner and accurately described in the information. Enjoy!

Beautiful cabin, fantastic views
I stayed recently at Steve’s cabin and have nothing but good things to say about it. From the moment I opened the door I could tell I would enjoy my stay there: all the interior is a lovely golden brown wood I later found out is called Laurel. Unlike many houses in Central America, even the ceiling is wood. There is a porch at the back with a view up the valley, and I spent mornings with a cup of tea and a pair of binoculars watching the oro pendolas, parrots, vultures, and dozens of other birds. The hummingbirds often fly in the front door and out the back. I was there during the rainy season, and I think one of the things I miss most is the afternoon rains pounding on the steel roof.

Southern Hospitality
Steve served as an excellent concierge-property manager. The cabin was clean upon arrival and Steve was eager to show me the foot paths on property and recommend area points of interest. I appreciated the bag of coffee and sugar waiting for me in my cabin; and found fresh eggs, bananas, and sweet peppers on my doorstep the next day. I LOVED the crisp nights and mornings, the frolicking birds and super vista. I travelled alone so had plenty of space. If 4 used the cabin, there might be a shortage of towel hanging space in bathroom and space to store clothes- minor issues. Not that Steve always will do this, by my visit caught him with loads of bananas. He decided to make Banana Bread one night and brought me hot slices over in the rain with his umbrella! Soon after, Steve was craving rice pudding and decided he'd try making it. Again that evening t happened to rain, but I got a knock on the door. There was Steve, under an umbrella, with a big, hot mug and spoon to drop off. He truly has the gift of hospitality and accommodated all questions I had. Rafting available nearby, along with bird watching tours, coffee farm tours, and waterfall with swimming hole, among others I'm sure.

About the host

Host profile image
I live on a 4 acre farm in the mountains of Costa Rica with fruit trees, coffee, hummingbirds, waterfalls, and jungle. My friends say I live in Paradise, and it's probably true. It is beautiful here, green, with flowers blooming year round. I teach English here. People rave about Steve's Cabin, it is quiet and peaceful here. If you like birds we have them, too. Come check out beautiful Costa Rica and let me show you some Southern Hospitality on my farm.

Why they chose this property

I bought my farm because of the beauty here in this area and the climate. The climate here is springtime year round with a temperature range that averages 65 degrees F at nights to 83 degrees F during the day. There is a multitude of different type of birds here. I am working on solar, wind, hydroelectic and aquaponic projects.

What makes this property unique

This farm has good soil for growing things, large springs with delicious water, plentiful water for growing tilapia and my aquaponics project. I use a pump that pumps the water up to tanks above my house using only the pressure of the water, no electricity. I have a jungle with waterfalls, and I have planted many different types of fruit trees and herbs which we can use to cook with.
