About this property

Tranquility Bay, Dildo, NL - A complete escape close to home

You won't find Tranquility Bay on a map of Newfoundland, so its best you not dedicate too much time to that effort at the moment. We'll get to that in a moment....

Described by a local business man as "the nicest piece of property in Trinity Bay", our "cottage" at Tranquility Bay, is just one hour from St. John's. Nestled on a quiet corner overlooking Trinity Bay, this property features complete privacy, a private beach, a Hydropool Self-Cleaning Hot Tub and a newly renovated property all throughout.

Understanding that the location of this property simply can not be beat, the actual home consisted of an orginal cottage built circa 1974, and an extension built circa 2000. The orginal cottage has been extensively renovated in 2016 with a nautical theme and a Cape Cod beach house in mind. New everything except for some old hardwood flooring to maintain a hint of the old. "New" meaning we took the entire roof structure out and went back to the beginning - wiring, heating, air conditioning, kitchen, bathroom, fireplace and furniture. All is new as of 2016. The original cottage is what we had envisioned it to be and it is beautiful.

The extension has been partially renovated and now features a sitting room with a view to behold. This part of the home offers up the 3 extra bedrooms on the 2nd floor - two with bay windows that provide the best panoramic view you can imagine. There is also a gain of 2 1/2 bathrooms in this area.

Outside, the property is situated on 2 acres with plenty of grass and green space to play bocce ball, throw a football or baseball or to simply walk around. In places the rocky cliffs are quite steep and care should be taken when sitting for your morning coffee. To the left while facing the ocean there is a short scramble to "Treasure beach" (as named by our 7-year old son) which is nestled beneath much higher cliffs. Directly in front is a private beach where we spend most of our time with our children.

Getting back to the location, "Tranquilty Bay is found on the edge of the little hamlet of Dildo, NL. That is about as gentle as we can say it with a name that garners reactions from a blush and giggle to down right offending people. This town is a great place to take a stroll, meet the local artisans, fisherman and gift store folk. In season, the Dildo Dory is a great little restaurant to enjoy fresh chowder and a sandwich. Visitors to the cottage from May to October find themselves watching seals, whales, tuna, eagles and at one point hundreds and hundreds of butterflies! Overall, the scenery is exceptional, the pace is perfect and the convenience of being just one hour from the airport makes it truly a complete escape close to home.

Lovely spot
The views from this house are amazing, with spectacular sunsets and we saw whales in the bay from the house. The kids loved the private beach and we all enjoyed the hot tub. There is loads of space - enough to entertain our Newfoundland family. We were concerned about the lack of curtains when we arrived, but actually we all slept fine.

Jack and Jill Party
We had a wonderful time. It was a great place to have our wedding party for our Jack and Jill. It would have been nice to have some fans in the rooms since it got really hot upstairs due to the lack of blinds. But overall, we had an amazing time. Thanks so much for everything! Katrina and Curtis

Ten days of glorious weather, serenity, and a welcoming town
We recently spent 10 days at this cottage for a 60th birthday for my partner. To start, the location was idyllic and the beauty of the water from our deck was always enough for us to pause and admire it for hours on end. The town and its people were always warm and welcoming and some of us spent our mornings at the pier or the dock watching fishermen catch and prepare their fish. Indeed many of them gave us some of their catch for free! The food at the Barn Cafe and the Brewery was delicious, and the weather never failed to be beautiful and warm. My group of 8 adults spent many days or evenings enjoying each others company, eating loster dinners, playing games, reading books on the deck, or enjoying the warm soaks in the incredibly clean hot tub. We even had the pleasure of meeting the housecleaner and her family. She had come by to mow the grass, and as we sat on the deck watching her work so hard, we decided to welcome her and her family afterwards to join us for a short while afterwards. They were delightful! Unfortunately, I am giving this place a 2-3 star rating however. And these are the reasons: 1. The grounds are very unkempt. I would venture to say that there has been no attempt to renovate outside. 2. The welcome book with instructions is very outdated. They refer to chickens on the property. I would venture to say they havent been around for years. 3. The instructions acknowledge some of the things that need fixing, but again, no attempt to fix over the years.

About the host

We own and operate a small business in Mount Pearl, NL, and the nature of our business keeps us busy 6-7 days a week in the summer months. To that end, we are not able to use the cottage much in the summer months and felt it would be a shame to let it just sit there. We get out there at almost every opportunity, and it seems that every time we go, we return feeling like we've been on vacation for a week.

Why they chose this property

This property is unique. We named it after Ensenada Honda in Culebra, Puerto Rico. The lady who was with us at the time claimed it meant "Tranquility Bay". The truth we discovered is that it actually means "Deep Cove" which leaves us wondering what other inaccuracies she told us! Either way, we liked the feeling of Tranquility Bay, and stuck to it.
This property is UNIQUE! The location, with the private beach and proximity to St. John's can not be beat. The views, the privacy and the comfort can not be beat. It is truly a gem.

What makes this property unique

The convenience of this property being less than 1hr drive from St. John's is a great asset. Although not far away, it could be a thousand miles away. When you get there, you have all of the conveniences of home nestled on 2 acres with stunning panoramic views of Trinity bay, complete privacy and a private beach. Based on double occupancy, this home now sleeps 14 comfortably with 2 more single beds for children (one being a top bunk!). For travelling families, you won't find better. For small groups, you won't find better.
