Overview

About the property

3 bedroom villa with pool / sleeps 6, close to coast of Puglia

This 5 year old, stunningly designed villa is situated in peaceful olive groves in the coastal resort of Specchiolla on the outskirts of Carovigno, in easy reach of shops and restaurants. It is 20 minutes drive from Brindisi airport and 10 minutes from the beach and offers a fabulously different Italian holiday experience. The villa has an elevated outlook to the Adriatic sea with beautiful arched stone terraces and steps leading down to the pool which is surrounded by a ceramic tiled patio area. It has three double bedrooms, with king sized beds + en suites in two, and twin single beds in the other + separate bathroom. The air-conditioned & centrally heated villa has an open plan fully equipped modern fitted kitchen, dining room and lounge. The villa is set in 1.2 acres of olive groves, with figs and almond trees in a quiet rural area. A dry stone wall and fencing surround the property which also has an extensive roof terrace, where views overlooking the property are amazing. Our agents live very close and offer horse riding and training to guests who are interested so please ask them when you arrive if you would like to do this.

This area has such a lovely temperate climate that holidays at any time of the year are great. The temperature is mild compared with the cold British winters, and it is often possible to be sitting on the terrace enjoying breakfast in the winter, so makes an ideal early spring or late autumn break.

The early arrival of spring in March is also a wonderful time to visit. The olive groves are smothered in gorgeous yellow spring flowers, with grape hyacyths, and lilac cyclamens growing wild and profusely! Although the pool is not open until mid- May, there are wonderful beach and country walks to take and enjoy the sunny weather. It's a great place at any time of the year and can be a wonderful de-stressing break! There are so many interesting towns to visit and great places to eat,. The history of this region is extremely varied and intriguing due to the many invasions from other nations and their differing life styles. You could learn a lot by exploring the towns and villages in this lovely part of Italy, in temperatures that are very pleasant out of season and when you get to know the Italian people they make you feel very welcome indeed.

About Josephine Hale

My husband and I have loved Italy all our lives and when the opportunity came up we looked for a property that we would love to own in this country. Puglia was an untried area for us, so we took a trip with my husbands sister and her partner to explore this part of Italy. What we discovered was a lovely rural countyside, with a gentler pace of life and warm and generous people. After looking at several properties we were taken to this lovely site by a good agent, who we now happily call a friend! We fell in love with it and decided to have our villa built as close to our specification as the laws in Italy allow.. Since embarking on this adventure I have retired from my busy job as the Head of a Procurement Department in the NHS and am now catching up on millions of tasks at home that have waited too long! My most favourite past-time is painting. I studied art at the Cambridge School of Art for 4 years and have taught Calligraphy at the West Suffolk College since 1990. Now most of my paintings are of Italy! My husband still works but took a less stressful job which he enjoys, but we both look forward to our trips to the villa. We manage several trips each year but spend most our our time doing the garden or working in the villa to make it more attractive and comfortable for us and our guests. We manage the bookings ourselves but have employed a family resident in Puglia to organise the cleaning, gardening, pool and maintenance and the welcoming for our guests.

Why Josephine Hale chose Brindisi area

Because the plot has wonderful elevated views of the sea, it is quiet, and in a rural location and the prettiness of its position among the olive trees, captivated us. In the spring the ground under the trees is covered with wonderful wild flowers and the sound of bird song fills the air. It is truly a magical place.

We also designed the villa to our own specifications within the rules and regulations of Italian law, so it is ideal for a family to stay in. Many of our guests have said they prefer to stay in the villa instead of going to the beach as the pool is great, and the surroundings are extremely relaxing.

We began our cacti garden project this year. We sited it down the steep bank on the right hand side of the pool which is fenced off from gaining access by the pool patio. it was hard work digging and planting on the slope as we struggled to stop ourselves sliding down but with the aid of some large rocks placed strategically down the slope by our agent Andreas and Antonio we managed to plant a number of interesting and colourful specimens. Some of the rocks were flat so that they can be used as stepping stones making it easier to weed the plot.It seems to be flourishing and we will add to it every year until it is complete. We hope you will enjoy it.

What makes this villa unique

It is very close to Brindisi Airport, just 20 minutes drive away and also only about an hour away from Bari Airport. It is close to the beach and to many nice coastal restaurants; it has lots of historically interesting towns. The most captivating sight are the many little trulli's that pepper the countryside. These little dwellings are now incorporated into many homes owned by Italians and other nationalities who love this part of Italy.

We love the tranquility of the area, its unique beauty has enthralled us, along with the lovely weather and the friendly people.

You can't fail to love it once you have visited it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Sorry Jo, I completely forgot to mention that we had a really good time and in fact saw more of Puglia this time than previously when we have stayed further north up around Cisternino – even allowing for the turn in the weather.

The villa is situated approximately two kilometres from the sea where the land gradually falls from the upland plains of 'Le Murge' to meet the lower coastal plains of Brindisi. This coastline is among the most beautiful in the Brindisi area with the beach at Torre Guaceto designated a natural reserve protected by the WWF. The nearby town of Ostuni high on the Murge overlooking the sea is very popular and worth a visit, with it's tiny streets full of shops, bars and restaurants and the fifteenth century Cathedral sitting right at the top. Lecce is a beautiful baroque town, with many ancient Roman ruins and is a lively, bustling town buzzing with life at night. A visit to Alberobello is a must, to see the superb 'trulli' houses which are so unique to Puglia and for the children and young at heart the Zoo Safari Park at Fasano makes a lovely day out. Caravigno, our local town is a great place to eat and serves wonderful local produce such as fish, cheese, tomatoes and olives.

Notes:
The property is newly built and most of the garden has been landscaped. Because of the elevated position, access is by steps only making it unsuitable for wheelchairs, but it does benefit from having the most spectacular views from the roof terrace down to the sea, and is particularly wonderful at night. The pool is surrounded by a tiled terrace and has a spring board, a ladder at the deep end and steps at the shallow end. A cool outdoor shower is close for use before and after swimming, and a variety of outdoor furniture has been added for your comfort while enjoying the peace and quiet of the private pool. We have added railings around a large part of the pool to ensure safety for our guests, particularly the children. In the evening the pool area can be illuminated by internal and external lights. Renting a car is essential for access to shops, restaurants, site seeing and the beach. No diving allowed in the pool for your own safety. Please do not smoke in the villa or the garden.

Perfect Villa

  • 5 of 5

In nearly 30 years of staying in villas, this is the nearest to perfect that we've found. It is modern with a design sensitive to the area. It has a new kitchen, decent size bedrooms and best of all a good size pool. The view of olive groves and beyond them the sea is terrific and it is secluded. We couldn't have wanted for more. The service from both the owner and Antonio the local representative was excellent.

Excellent villa with wonderful owners who couldn't have been more helpful

  • 5 of 5

This villa did everything that it said it would - and more ! The owners very kindly agreed to purchase a table tennis table so that when it was really hot in the middle of the day the children could be active in the cool of the lower ground section of the villa. This was hugely popular and a great success.

We also really appreciated the food which was waiting for us on our arrival. We didn't know that there would be a 'welcome pack' for us but after a long and tiring journey it was just what we needed.

Antonio - the Italian caretaker - was delightful and did all that he could to help us settle in. We certainly would have never found the villa if he hadn't have met us and then guided us to it.

There were a number of power cuts when we were there but that was obviously nothing to do with the owner however, it did cause the wifi to stop working but a quick text to the owner ensured that the Italian company responsible for the maintenance of the line was brought in to rectify this.

Altogether a very happy holiday for us and our three children aged 14, 12 and 9.

Excellent villa, recommended

  • 5 of 5

Modern, well-equipped and comfortable. If anything the photos make it look smaller than it feels when you're there. The memory foam mattresses and air-con make for a great night sleep. The pool is above average size and well maintained. The villa is away from neighbours and peaceful. We found plenty to do in the locality for our 2 week stay.

A great two weeks in August 2013

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful two week holiday in this excellent villa in Puglia. The open plan living area worked really well for our family of five as did the whole accommodation being on a single floor. Our three children (13, 11 and 6) loved the villa including and perhaps most importantly the superb large pool. We all enjoyed the stunning sea views particularly from the roof terrace where you get a true sense of the location of this property. The villa was extremely well appointed/maintained, was spotlessly clean and we were very well looked after by the English speaking house manager and housekeepers during our stay.

Accepting that the sound of our own children enjoying themselves in the pool may not be ideal for the relaxation of others, we had no concerns on this holiday. Despite this rural location, the property is close to the beach, not far from a large supermarket and only a short drive to a number of restaurants. Although the nearby coastline is rocky, there are stretches of sand and the small sandy beach we found benefited from not many people and a parking spot virtually next to where we were sat!

Aside from the villa, we enjoyed trips to Lecce, Gallipoli, Alberobello and particularly Ostuni. Ostuni is approximately eight miles away and has numerous places to eat and watch the world go by.

We would thoroughly recommend this villa and the local area to anyone considering a holiday in Puglia.
