The attractive village of Aperi is situated 8 km north of Pigadia and it used to be the capital of Karpathos. The village lies at an altitude of 320 meters, amidst lush green, on the slopes of Mount Hamali at the top of which one can see the remains of the Venetian castle. Aperi is one of the largest villages of the island with the finest examples of traditional architecture built by nobles and Greek immigrants.

Aperi is only a 7 minutes drive away from the famous Ahata beach famous for its crystal clear waters. Kyra Panagia beach is just a 10-minute drive and Apella beach is a 12-minute drive. There are also a number of picturesque villages such as Volada and Othos. Karpathos is famous for its music, dances, and fiestas and many of them take place during the summer months. It is definitely an experience to watch and take part in these festivities, so don’t miss out. Keep in mind that wedding and christenings have also a very traditional character and they are open to every visitor in the area!

Starting from Aperi there is a European hiking trail that leads you to the top of Lastos peak where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the island and the nearby island of Kasos.

Some of the most important sightseeings of Aperi are the ruins of a tower built in 3,000 BC and can be seen on the north side of the village 'Volada' as well as the ruins of an ancient temple close to Ahata beach. In close distance to the village, several paths lead to the famous pebbled beach of Achata and to the beautiful beaches of Kyra Panagia and Apella (or Ambella).

• Few words about Karpathos
Karpathos is situated in the most south part of the Dodecanese complex, between Crete and Rhodes, and is the second largest island of the complex. Basically, it is considered a mountainous island (Kali Limni is the highest peak-altitude 1.214m) full of water springs, pine-trees forests, vineyards, olives and fruit-bearing trees. The rock caves of the island are the home of the Mediterranean seal called Μonachus monachus, while, along with Kastelorizo, this is the only place where we can meet the amphibian species Mertensiella luscani. According to mythology, Iapetos, the son of Uranus and Gaea [Sky and Earth] was the first inhabitant of the island. It was firstly inhabited during Neolithic Age, while in the Homeric Sagas it is reported as Anemoessa.

Its history has a close affiliation with Rhodes and Dodecanese. The conquerors who defined the island’s character were Francs, Turks and Italians. The island extends over a surface of 301 km2, its coastline is 106 km long and it has 6,500 inhabitants.

Celebrated for its wild mountains and gas-blue coves, this long craggy island is among the least commercialized in Greece. Legend has it Prometheus and his Titans were born here, and with its cloud-wrapped villages and rugged beauty, there’s still something undeniably primal in the air. Homer, never a man to mince his words, called it 'Karpathos', but actually it’s a lovely island.
Popular with adrenaline junkies, southern Karpathos is in the spotlight each summer when it hosts an international kitesurfing competition. Meanwhile, the fierce wind that lifts the spray from the turquoise waves blows its way to the mountainous north, battering pine trees and howling past sugar-cube houses. Karpathian women at this end of the island still wear traditional garb, especially in the time-forgotten village eyrie of Olymbos, perched atop a perilous mountain ridge.
