Converted mill set in a 100 acres at the end of a secluded valley

Updated: 19-Sep-2016
A get away from it all 3 bedroom farmhouse set in its own beautiful valley

The house, part mill, part farmhouse, sits next to one of the many streams that keep this valley so lush. Behind the pool area, vast limestone cliffs pocketed with ancient caves await the energetic.

The surrounding 100 acres belong to the property ensuring you total privacy.

Accommodation comprises of three double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large flagstone dining area, fully equipped kitchen with open fireplace and a large sitting/TV room.

Outside there are two terraces. One covered at the front with a bread oven, the other next to the pool and shaded by a canopy of vine leaves. The pool itself is 13m long and good for swimming and games as it is of uniform depth. A full safety compliant cover can be drawn across when the pool is not in use.

Log fires in the winter and barbecues in the bread oven contrast with modern amenities like satellite internet connection, multi channel television, DVD and video, and a covered table tennis area in the barn.

Legend has it that this was the site of a Roman villa and certainly evidence of old roads, stone water sluices and well-made walls sleep undisturbed in the hundred acres of land that enfolds Maraval.

In springtime carpets of wild flowers surround the house, in summertime the wooded walks provide shade for guests and animals alike - deer, wild boar, pine martin, red squirrels, fox and badger make their home here in the valley.

The nearest shops and restaurants are in the medieval hilltop town of Cordes, ten kilometres drive away. Here you’ll find everything from a seven day a week privately owned supermarket to a two Michelin star restaurant. It’s a wonderful mixture of art and rural life. Antique furniture, sunny cafes, tapestry makers and glass blowers.

For the more energetic there’s horse riding from stables situated in the forest above the house, canoeing for the whole family on the Aveyron, golf beside the Tarn river in Albi, plus of course a hundred acres of surrounding forest to explore. The region itself has miles of unspoiled empty roads to cycle or drive and a whole host of historic hilltop villages and towns, bustling markets, vineyards and châteaus to visit.

Had a wonderful stay at Maraval. One of the most relaxing holidays we have ever experienced. Seclusion and tranquility in abundance yet not far from the interesting medieval town of Cordes. Excellent facilities in the house if you want to self cater. Breakfast was usually in the sun on the terrace, lunch under the vines around the pool, dinner at one of the excellent and affordable restaurants in the area and nightcaps in the garden under the most amazing starlit skies. The house is obviously someone's second home and not just a rental property. It is comfortably furnished, well equipped and has many family pictures on the walls. Apparently there are caves to be discovered but I have to say we never looked for them as the grounds seemed to go on forever. Instead we preferred to stick around the pool and enjoy the peace and quiet.... and the butterflies.

A stunning location in rural France

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderfully relaxing week at Maraval. The house, pool and grounds were even more stunning than anticipated from the photos on the website. The house was very well equipped and furnished comfortably. The house manager, Chris, made two visits to check that we had everything we needed, which was reassuring, given the slightly remote location. It was great to have such a big, well-maintained pool. We enjoyed the wide variety of friendly wildlife, especially the visit from the deer, and the bats in the evening. The local hilltop villages of Penne, Puycelsi, Bruniquel were well worth visiting, as well as the obvious visit to nearby Cordes. We would highly recommend this property, and hope to make a return visit.

Pure bliss!

  • 5 of 5

Out of the many properties we have rented in France, Maraval is out on its as the finest. From the moment you reach the end of the lane and catch your first glimpse of the property you are struck by the seclusion and setting. The pool is excellent and invigorating, the house full of character, and much more than this it has the feeling of being a home. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay at Maraval and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Maraval is truly a special place and we loved our stay there. Total privacy and with beautiful greenery all around, plus the lovely stream. The pool was wonderful for our hot weather and the home itself is charming. Wish I owned it!!
