Overview

About the property

Spacious open plan barn sleeps 6. Big fully fenced, private garden.

Privately situated in its own grounds, this stylishly converted barn provides the perfect opportunity for your French countryside holiday. It has a cool open plan interior with good light and space. One double bedroom is en-suite whilst the two other double bedrooms share a bathroom. Watch the sun go down from the balcony or dine al fresco on the patio or in the newly built garden abri. The large, fully fenced garden and oak wood are perfect for relaxing in the sun or shade. Close to St Aulaye, the tiny hamlet of La Ganetie is on a hill above the Dronne valley with countryside views across the valley. The river Dronne and local lakes are great for fishing. In summer both Aubeterre and St Aulaye create riverside beaches with restaurants and river swimming. You may hire canoes and paddle down the rivers having great fun when you hit the unexpected shutes! There are sign posted walks along the river and through the forests all around. After a busy day exploring the vin yards, historical sites, Art galleries and beautiful countryside of the Perigord vert, you will love to come home to relax in the elegant ambiance of 'Katy's Barn'.

The Terrace and Garden: Enjoy eating outside on the terrace, in the abri or in the shade of the oak wood. The house and garden overlooks the rich countryside of the Perigord Vert while the evergreen bamboos in the top hedge and the fruit trees in the hedge running along the tiny country lane ensure your privacy. The garden is very pretty in Spring with cherry, apple and plum blossom and the song of the nightingales, In summer and autumn the cherries, Mirabels and figs are ripe to eat.

Local Area: Close by, the historic Market town of St Aulaye has amenities such as banks, restaurants, Art galleries and shops including a good sized Carrefour supermarket which stays open till late. In the summer enjoy the beach and the swimming in the River Dronne where there is a playground and café/restaurant which frequently hosts live music and entertainment. You may stroll from the barn to Cheneau where you can see the Chateau and Mill beside the river and there are plenty of woodland and riverside walks close by. Riberac, Chalais and Aubeterre are all within twenty minutes drive and provide further opportunities for exploration, marketing and shopping. The Chateau de Talleyrand in Chalais now houses an excellent restaurant and Art Gallery.

Activities:

Walking and cycling - there are many way-marked trails in the area. The little winding lanes and white roads provide good routes along the river and through the forests and hills.

Horse riding. (It is probably best to book this before you arrive as the stables get very busy in the summer)

Cycling: There are a number of bike hire companies which will deliver the bikes to your door step.

Bird watching. Wild animals such as deer are common in the forests.

There are lakes and rivers for fishing, canoeing or swimming.

Visit historical sites including Roman villas, Romanesque churches, pre-historic cave paintings and carvings, the Museum of Pre-history.

About Katherine Hick

The photo above is the first winter party held at the barn in 2010. The conversion wasn't completely finished but the beams were great places to hang the decorations!

Originally from Yorkshire, I have worked in England, Spain, Africa and South East Asia as an artist and art teacher for about thirty years.

Katherine Hick purchased this barn in 2007

Why Katherine Hick chose Perigord Vert

During my first visit to the barn, walking around what was then an overgrown field, gusts of white butterflies rose from the long grass and the wild flowers and shafts of afternoon sun shone through the oaks and across the field. It made me feel joyful. I decided straight away that that was the place for me.

What makes this barn unique

The countryside in this part of France is lovely and the barn is only a short trip to river where there is a beach, swimming and a restaurant in the summer. The area is full of places to visit and the barn is centrally placed for day trips to the coast or to the prehistoric caves to the east. The garden is big and quiet and peaceful. It is big enough for children and dogs to race around and play and there is plenty of space inside and outside the barn to relax or to get on with some drawing.

Fantastic barn conversion, great facilities, huge garden

  • 5 of 5

We (6 adults in total) stayed here for 2 weeks in August 2017, the barn in an amazing conversion retaining all of the original beams and character - there so much space you'll never feel crowded and the garden must be almost an acre in size - just brilliant

A great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The property was spacious and well equipped. The photos didn't do it justice.

The Barn was in a quiet location but with plenty to do and explore within a short drive away.

The barn was gorgeous better than the photos had suggested.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for three weeks with our dog Olive who loved the big garden which is fully fenced. The local beach by the river was brilliant and going in the last three weeks of September meant we had this to ourselves. The surrounding area was so peaceful and pretty. We visited a lot of the local larger villages and markets and eat out at lunchtime at chalais and aubereterre sur dronne which was a gorgeous local village with a lovely square of restaurants. We would like to thank Mark and Jenny who looked in on us once a week to make sure everything was ok and to bring fresh bedding and towels. We have to say that this is the best area of France and will be coming back again next year.

Very peaceful barn location

  • 4 of 5

The property is a converted barn with the social accommodation all on the second floor. Divided into two halves it would work extremely well for a social group. Lots of space. The garden was large and was adored by our dog!

The property is a short 20 min walk to the centre of St Aulaye (or a 5minute drive), where there is a supermarket for all your basic needs. The river nearby has a beach and is a wonderful place to relax.

Overall the place was very peaceful and ideal for a relaxing holiday.
