About this property

Villa Cocobolo - Private Ocean View Beach Villa

At Villa Cocobolo you will find the peace and tranquility that you are looking for in your trip to Costa Rica.

We are a 5 acre oasis 50 meters above sea level and just 175 meters from the beautiful beach of Playa Manzanillo and a nice walk or quick drive to the breathtaking beach of Playa Hermosa.

Villa Cocobolo is surrounded by the rare Costa Rican Cocobolo hardwood tree as well as the renowned Pochote. The house is built in the loft style with second floor windows offering ocean, sunset, and mountain views. The bathroom and the bedroom are both located upstairs, and the bedroom’s sliding glass doors open to a private balcony allowing ocean views, and monkey and bird watching from the comfort of your bed.

The kitchen and entertaining areas are downstairs and have three patios, two of which are accessed by sliding glass doors for more ocean viewing and garden access.

Villa Cocobolo can accommodate 2 adults with children or possibly 3 adults.

Built and designed by the owner in August of 2008 the home has vaulted ceilings of Pochote beams with Laurel wood paneling and the verandas, patios, stairs, door and window frames are all accented in Teak.

Villa Cocobolo has a fully equipped kitchen, comes completely furnished, and is surrounded by lush gardens, white gravel walkways, wrought iron gates for added privacy and private parking, pressurized hot/cold water, sky/cable tv, wifi, cleaning service, gardener and laundry services.

We are also excited to announce in December 2016, we will be adding our own ocean/sunset view craft beer pub on the premises along with a small restaurant to better serve our guests and the area's needs. We will offer a minimum of 6 craft beers brewed on-site, a variety of cocktails and a simple menu with something for everyone.

Take time to walk along the trails of our 5 acre property...Look for coatis, anteaters, jaguarundis, white face and howler monkeys, various bird species, and iguanas...Or find one of our sitting areas and just watch the wildlife and nature and listen to the ocean.

We are owner operated and have a small staff, but we can help with any questions or needs, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your stay with us...

The beaches....

Because of rock reefs surrounding the entrance to playa manzanillo, this beach has it all. Here you can surf, snorkel, swim, kayak, fish, beach comb, and at the end of the day enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets the nicoya peninsula has to offer. The best part about manzanillo beach is many days the only footprints you will find will be your own.

A few years ago playa hermosa was basically unknown, but recently discovered by surfers tired of the crowds and congestion of santa teresa, this beach is becoming increasingly more popular for tourists and surfers. Playa hermosa lives up to its name and is truly beautiful offering great waves for surfers, swimming and beachcombing on a long and wide un-crowded beach.

To truly capitalize on all the peninsula has to offer, a car or 4 wheeler is a must, but still many of our guests prefer to walk the old beach road to playa hermosa enjoying the quiet and slow pace - stopping at the tide pools, private beaches, the waterfall, and always returning with stories of seeing more monkeys and iguanas than people.

The surf....

Yes, there is surf. A short drive south are the more popular surf spots of playa carmen (mal pais) and santa teresa, but just a few minutes away in manzanillo and playa hermosa you can find waves for all levels of surfing (reef, point breaks, beach breaks, river mouths) – beginner to advanced – with crowd and attitude free, consistent surf.

For any surf questions feel free to contact the owner who has over 30 years surfing experience.

We can also set-up surf lessons with qualified instructors.

The fishing....

Manzanillo and north to the bongo river is an area famous for fishing. You can go local and try your hand at hand-line fishing or bring your own gear and head out to the reefs at low tide. You may get lucky and hook sea bass, snook, red snapper, or a rooster. A quick run north will get you to the bongo which is legendary for its fishing due to its river mouth - a great place to catch snook, just ask a local family who bought a car they call “robalo” meaning “snook” in spanish. All the money they earned to buy the car came from selling their snook/robalo catches from the bongo.

We can also book fishing tours for you – just ask.

Want to go back!
We loved it! Comfortable, clean, secure and had a beautiful view of ocean. The owner was so helpful lining up surf lessons. Would recommend having a rental car.

Excellent Stay
My wife and I are avid readers of reviews when choosing a place to stay, and after reading all the reviews for Villa Cocobolo, it was an easy decision for us. Trey was very communicative during the reservation process, and after we booked, he was always available to answer any of our questions. We knew from other guests we would be happier if we had a 4x4 vehicle or a 4-wheeler. We chose both! We loved the drive from Liberia to the property, and enjoyed a few days with a 4-wheeler. The roads can be fun, you can get lost, and things certainly can get interesting, but we knew that beforehand, so it just became part of our adventure. Villa Cocobolo is exactly how it is represented on the VRBO site, well to be honest, it is even better. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen has everything you need, and the home is beautiful. We saw some impressive sunsets right from our porch and at the pool. As for the pool, it is a nice treat at the end of a long day, and the days for us were long. We usually woke up at sunrise to the sounds of monkeys and birds. Trey is always working around the property planting, gardening and making improvements, so he is very accessible. He took my wife and I for our first surf lessons ever, and we both stood up and rode lots of waves to the shore. If you are looking for a surf instructor and Trey is available, look no further. Trey and Jaclyn invited us over to their new project, a craft brewery.  It is a work in progress at this point, but we am excited to see the final product next year! We love craft beer, and we tried Trey’s American Pale Ale, Porter and IPA, and it is obvious  the same love and dedication for the property is being put into the beer. We can’t wait to come back and stay when they have the brewpub open. Cheers!

Beautiful views, too isolated, far from stores & swimming beach, on noisy dusty road, needs repairs
Positive: Beautiful house with tropical wood, excellent A/C plus reliable wifi and functioning TV Great sunsets private pool shared with one other villa places to sit in sun or shade with a variety of chairs great views of parrots feeding in the cashew tree right next to our upper balcony, howler monkeys in nearby trees Prompt e-mail and helpful responses from Trey ( who was away during our stay ) before our arrival Good quality bed ( pillows, unfortunately were old and lumpy ) The Not as Positive Good to know: As advertised, not on the ocean – access 55 metres down a steep dusty busy road This property is not, as billed, in Santa Teresa but 6 miles away in Manzanillo Closest beach ( Manzanillo ) rocky and very swimmer unfriendly – good swimming beach ( Hermosa ) about a 30 – 40 minute walk ( 10 minute drive ) Villa is right on the road – noisy and dusty No nearby restaurants – a very limited one is about ¾ of a mile away, opens only at 2pm - No nearby stores – small grocery store about 45 minutes walk away, full grocery store 6 miles away Pool OK but in poor repair with many broken tiles, infinity feature not working and collected lots of leaves/flowers in it - often had swarms of bees/wasps around it Poolside railing incomplete – unsafe for smaller kids Neighbour played loud music intemittently (big sound system as it was a bar that closed) Kitchen gas stove has no ignitor - has to be lit by matches, 3 of 4 burners worked, overhead stove light burned out -we cooked with a flashlight to check food I suggest a few more plates, & wine glasses and that knives be sharpened Bedroom: Lumpy pillows; no drawers to store clothing in bedroom ( small cupboard had only one hanger ) Multiple locks on all doors plus an alarm system – reassuring I guess – our friends who stayed in the bungalows had shoes stolen that had been left out ( overnight ) to dry Info folder did not incude any info on closest stores, restaurants or adjacent beaches Cleaner cleans only on request, not every 3 days as info folder indicated Pleasant staff but not able to help with info re shuttles to San Jose Bottom Line: A car is essential at this location. ( I should have researched this ). The road to Santa Teresa ( 6 miles away ) is in worse shape than most of the surprisingly poor roads in most of Costa Rica. We travelled Costa Rica 4 weeks and met friends here who toured for 3 weeks. We both feel this is the only place we stayed that we would not return t

Beautiful place
We had a wonderful stay at Villa Cocobolo. The villa was very comfortable and a great location close to everything yet just far enough away. It feels like you are in your own world on top of the mountain. We loved spending time around the pool viewing all the nature that is around the property. The resident troop of Howler monkeys keep us busy most afternoons watching the interactions of the troop. The end of the day there are great sunsets viewed right from the villa porch or pool. There are several wonderful places to eat close by, Atardecer Dorado, Langosta Paraiso, and great Japanese at Koji’s. It is a place we would definitely return too.

Magnificent view
This property was a diamond in the rough. Well situated. Easy to find, thanks to the accurate directions given by the property owner. Near Santa Teresa which offers many restaurants, activities and beautiful beaches. A car is a must. The property was clean and well stocked. Everything you needed was at your finger tips. The owner was very hospitable, friendly and a plethora of knowledge and handsome too! The sunsets were unbelievable. So close you could almost touch them. Highly recommend Villa Cocobolo. Come on come all. Will return soon!

Why they chose this property

I chose Manzanillo because it was far enough away from the hustle and bustle and congestion of Santa Teresa, but close enough to hop in the car or on a 4-wheeler and have access to anything and everything one could want - and most importantly, the outstanding surfing and fishing!

What makes this property unique

Within half an acre of the villas, there are more than 25 different type of indigenous trees. The property itself is 5 acres and is connected by walking trails that my worker and I have built by hand and has ocean views from almost every corner of the property. All the trails have been planted and reforested, and because of the planting all the birds, butterflies, and animals have returned to the property. You can sit anywhere on the property and hear the waves crashing 50 meters below at Punta Pochote.
