About this property

Secluded eco-friendly beach cabana

Constructed from Belizian hardwoods these two self-catering studio cabanas were designed to blend into the environment. Both units run off clean solar energy, use a rain water collection system for their water supply and are equipped with butane stoves, refrigerators and on-demand water heaters.

While we do have two cabanas available for guests part of the appeal of Sabal Beach is the privacy and quiet offered here. To ensure that our guests are able to appreciate the setting we only rent the first floor cabana in conjunction with the second floor. Bottom line: you will never have a neighbor unless you are traveling with others and choose to be together.

The studios are fully furnished and kitchens are equipped with everything needed. Each studio has a queen size bed, full bathroom with hot & cold running water, table & chairs and outdoor seating/hammock area on the deck. Large windows on all sides, multi-speed ceiling fans and insulated roofs maximize the natural ocean breezes to keep the units cool.

The village of Punta Negra (which consists of about 20 villagers) lies approximately 2 miles south. You can walk for 5 miles north along the beach and encounter nothing manmade or 7 miles south and pass only a handful of houses. If walking is not your style we also have 2 sea kayaks available for guest use.

If you enjoy being part of nature this is a unique opportunity but it is not for everyone. If you need TV, a hairdryer, dishwasher, and a local bar this may not be the place for you.

If, however, the idea of a cocktail on the dock or from your hammock under the palms without other tourists around appeals to your sense of travel then you will love Sabal Beach.

Secluded, pristine, private beach!
Sabal Beach is a slice of Heaven on Earth! The cabana had everything we needed, the beach was beautiful & well maintained! We enjoyed fishing off the dock or just sitting there having cocktails! Beautiful sunrises and sunsets! We walked the beach to Punta Negra where Suzette took us hand line fishing one day, made us lunch one day and gave us lessons on making coconut oil and johnny cakes! David arranged everything perfectly from our flights from Belize City to Placencia to our taxi driver Walter who picked us up at the Placencia Airport and took us shopping for supplies before bringing us to our boat for the trip to Sabal Beach. Jason Williams is an awesome boat captain and tour guide, he has lived in the area his entire life and is very knowledgeable about the area. Jason is also the best fishing guide we have ever had as well! We will definitely return to Sabal Beach, our goal is to vacation there again next year! Thank you David for the great, one of a kind Belize experience!

Terrific secluded getaway in Toledo District
We believe Sabal Beach to be the finest secluded spot in the Toledo District, perfect for swimming from the beach, kayaking to a shallow coral reef, relaxing on a private sandy beach, far from the bustle of Placencia. An engineered private dock has deck heights for boats large and small, and offers a perfect spot to sit and contemplate the sunrise or sunset, or full moon rise as we did. The 2-story cabana is rented to only 1 party at a time, so we had the site to ourselves. Miles of sand beaches stretched north and south, offering interesting looks at mangrove swamp, shoreline forests, many kinds of animal tracks. Surf was mild in our visit, and water is pleasantly warm and free of sargassum. Solar panels provide plenty of power for lights, ceiling fan, and a great WiFi connection on the porch of the main house. Propane fridge made ice and kept food cool, and powered an on-demand water heater which worked fine. The grounds of the 9-acre getaway are cleared for easy walking and yet maintain plenty of big trees for shade, and birds. Mixed flocks of warblers, flocks of parrots and jays, and others we didn't recognize were easily seen from the 2nd story deck and from the ground. The owners have no dogs or cats. They also do not feed the birds, so the birds appear to behave naturally. I especially enjoyed photographing abundant animal tracks in the sand by the cabana and on walks along the seashore. Tracks of several foxes, a small cat, raccoons, and even a weasel-type animal were observed near the cabana. On a stroll along the shore,a small crocodile (2 - 3') left a tail drag mark into the ocean. We also saw a circular depression we thought might be a sea turtle "practice" nest just at the crest of the main beach. Another highlight for me was walking a mile or so to Punta Negra and enjoying a traditional Creole meal prepared by Ms. Suzette. This quiet little town of some 2-dozen people fronts directly on the beach while at its back is a national park. Ms. Suzette knew I was coming because the owners of Sabal Beach called her the day before. That morning she'd launched her little boat and caught a snapper on a handline just beyond the surf, and it was grilled to perfection, served with a tomato stuffed with home-made potato salad, rice & bans, fried plantains, curry stewed chicken, and chicken fingers. A jar of her special fresh-made hot sauce really spiced up the meal, which I enjoyed. Fresh-squeezed orange juice was excellent too. Jack

Hopefully more than once in a lifetime...
My partner and I spent an AMAZING week here at the end of 2014. It is everything that you've already read it is, and more. David and Wayne are great hosts - one of the things I miss most is the evening cocktail hour on the dock. Much of what I could say here, has already been said. None of the reviews you'll read here has been exaggerated or overstated. Seriously. This is the type of trip that most folks would call a once-in-a-lifetime thing - except, once you get back, you wonder why you'd limit yourself to once in a lifetime. My greatest praise is this: My partner and I can't wait to visit again.

Exactly what we were looking for!
Sabal Beach is truly a unique spot. It is not that easy these days to find a place that is uncrowded, restorative and gorgeous. We came for a week with the idea of 'roughing it' a bit but the cabana exceeded our expectations. Bedding was comfy, the cabana was clean, the breeze was fantastic, the view unbeatable and everything we needed was there and waiting for our arrival. David & Wayne were great hosts and gave us plenty of privacy but were very easy to deal with if we needed something, wanted to schedule a tour or had any questions. We took a tour of Monkey River that was really great since we were able to beat the normal tourist crowds up the river from Sabal Beach and the snorkel trip to the reef was superb. Saw tons of aquatic life and had the boat to ourselves for the day which made for a very relaxed day. I have been on other trips with 20+ divers or snorkelers / divers and felt rushed. Definitely was not the case on the tours we took from Sabal Beach. I would highly recommend Sabal Beach to anyone looking for a relaxing beach get away!

We are typically on-site at Sabal Beach and either we or our caretaker will always here to get you settled in, help you plan any trips if desired and answer questions. Originally we are both from the mid-Atlantic region in the US and have lived full-time in Belize since 2006.

Our initial intent was to open a jungle lodge here in Belize but the more mud we trekked through and the more mosquito bites we endured looking for jungle property the more we started to shift our focus to the coast. Fortunately we found a beautiful and unspoiled place just north of Punta Negra in the Toledo District of Belize in 2007.

After obtaining our residency we completed construction of the cabanas and beach house in April of 2010 and have enjoyed renting the units to travelers looking for a spot off the typical tourist route.

Why they chose this property

The natural beauty of this spot is very hard to beat.

What makes this property unique

We chose Sabal Beach because it is nestled between a marine reserve to the front and a national park to the rear. No traffic, no noise (other then waves and birds), no hassles. What is not to like?
