A former farm building, renovated and equipped to a very high standard.

Three bedroom cottage (sleeps 6) in the heart of the Normandy countryside

This superb holiday cottage consists of a kitchen, toilet and living room downstairs.Upstairs are three double bedrooms (the main bedroom has an en-suite consisting of shower, toilet, hand basin and heated towel rail), and a bathroom (bath with overhead shower, toilet, hand basin and heated towel rail). The main and second bedrooms have king size double beds and the third, two singles. There is ample wardrobe and drawer space in all bedrooms. Satellite TV is provided via a “Freesat” box which receives all main UK TV and radio channels. There is also a DVD /CD player, a selection of games, books, DVDs and CDs. We provide a good selection of walking maps and information about places of interest. INCLUDED in the price of your holiday are - electricity, hot water, bed linen, hair dryer, towels (including beach towels), tea towels, logs for wood burner (initial supply), UK “Freesat” satellite TV and radio, high chair, stair-gates, travel cot and mattress if required, and FREE WIFI broadband

Local Cafés and Restaurants: There are a number of cafés and restaurants serving wonderful food and wine at very reasonable prices (four course lunches including wine and cider for €10-12). We can advise you on some of the best locally but you will no doubt enjoy finding some for yourself.

One local restaurant which is nationally famous and is a five minute drive away (with a two course menu at €27 and three courses at €33, it is a little more expensive, but the food is superb and highly recommended. They even do takeaways - probably the most up market takeaway you will ever experience!

Another is the Auberge du Moulin at Brouains, about 10 minutes drive away. Again the food is truly superb!

Your holiday includes one complimentary evening's babysitting and transport to a local restaurant if required.

Local Amenities : St Pois, which is 5 minutes by car, has a post office, boulangerie, butcher (who does a take-away dish on Thursdays), mini-market, doctor's surgery, pharmacy, hairdresser, a small restaurant and a bar-tabac.

The town of Brécey (10 minutes) has a supermarket and a good selection of other shops. It also has a leisure area which includes an open air swimming pool, a paddling pool and tennis court.

The gîte itself is is surrounded by farmland and woodland. Ideal for walking, cycling or just relaxing. There are a number of walks through woods , along bocage tracks and quiet side roads, directly from the gîte.

In the cottage you will find maps of the locality as well as booklets of marked walks, many of which we have done ourselves and can recommend.

For Children: For children, there is the zoo at Champrepus (30 minutes drive) and the Enchanted Village (for younger children – 15 minutes), as well as Alligator Bay (over 200 alligators and crocodiles!) near Mont St Michel, and the St Malo Aquarium (sharks!). About 30 minutes drive away is the Ange Michel Water Park with flumes, water chutes and slides, as well as many other rides and attractions.

Or you could just spend a day on one of the many wonderful sandy beaches of the region. Our favourite is Carolles-Plage (a 45 minute drive) which combines large expanses of sandy beach and rock pools, cliff top walks and fishing for crevettes (shrimps). The latter is practiced both by professional fishermen and just locals catching their supper. Why not give it a try yourself!

Incidentally, the sea here is surprisingly warm during the summer due to the shallows waters of the Baie de Mont St Michel.

The Grand Départ of the Tour de France cycle race takes place on Saturday 2nd July 2016 from Mont-Saint-Michel. The following two stages on Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th are also in our local area.

About the Owner

We are Nina and John Costello. We retired in 2005 and bought this property in April that year. We previously lived in Bracknell, Berkshire, where we ran our own small business.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The gîte has everything we wanted for a peaceful week in the Normandy countryside. It is very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The attention to detail is impressive and we have been very comfortable here. We come to France regularly and if we come to this area again we will definitely stay here again.

Relaxing Getaway

  • 4 of 5

This property was pretty well situated between Normandy and Brittany, allowing us to take daily trips which were no longer than two hours from the home. The countryside was beautiful.

The Costello's renovated this farm building into a lovely, bright accommodation. I stayed with my husband and my son and his wife. We all had plenty of room. We used the outdoor grill almost every night and enjoyed sitting around the spacious kitchen table for dinner. All being said, a great vacation spot.

A lovely stay at Les Bruyeres

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week at Les Bruyeres. The cottage is of a very high standard and John and Nina's hospitality was superb. It's in a beautiful setting and John and Nina's invitation to make use of their gorgeous garden was much appreciated. It was a great base to explore the delights of Normandy and Brittany and we visited so many lovely places while we were there. I would highly recommend this as a place to stay and have done so already to some of my friends. We hope to visit again some day. Thank you again John and Nina.

Exceptional property

  • 5 of 5

Our hosts warmly welcomed us with fruit, wine and flowers, which set the tone for the entire holiday. The listing description was accurate with very high standards of equipment provision and cleanliness. The house was very well-maintained.The surroundings and panoramic views of the countryside were superb and we would have no hesitation in highly recommending the property to family and friends. John and Nina went out of their way to ensure that our stay was memorable.

We completely agree with the previous reviewers!

  • 5 of 5

What can we say without simply repeating the previous comments? John and Nina were gracious and helpful hosts, the property suited our group of 6 (4 adults, 2 grandchildren) very well, and the location for our trips around Normandy was just fine. (In fact, with its somewhat westerly location, it also would have suited a good part of Brittany - which we have done before, and so did not add on this occasion.) We would return without hesitation, and recommend it wholeheartedly to others.

A very pleasant week!

  • 5 of 5

Can't do much more than echo the other reviews: facilities were excellent, and John & Nina were very congenial hosts. We did so much daily traveling that I'm sure we did not properly enjoy all aspects of the property, especially the grounds and garden, but that does not diminish them in any way. The cottage was roomy, and all features as advertised. We concentrated on Normandy attractions, but the location is good for exploring much of eastern Brittany as well. Would recommend without reservation.

First of all, we arrived late in the evening and John was kind enough to guide us to the cottage. So our first impression was not clear until the next morning. What a beautiful morning and view. The cottage was lovely, clean, well equipped and very comfortable. The gardens surrounding the cottage gorgeous! A big plus was the wifi and the ever kind John and Nina. John was lovely to offer and kindly accepted.....(thank you !) to drive us to the local top rated restaurant La Moulen Jean. Which is heaven on a plate! Afterwards John came and picked us up and took us back! Amazing! The location, perfect, about an hour drive from the landing beaches. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would love to come back again.

From the Owner

We bought this property because of its superb location in the tranquil Normandy countryside overlooking the River Sée valley. We are on the slopes of Mont Buon, a 209 meter high hill. The view takes in the whole of the Sée valley as far as Avranche on the coast, 26 kms away. It also had the type of garden that we were looking for. As keen (but very amateur) gardeners, it gave us two acres of garden, orchard and field, and also an old farm building to renovate - which is now this holiday cottage.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Dinard (Ryanair) at 95 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : St Pois at 2 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Ouistreham (Caen) at 118 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Lake Dathée at 17 Kilometres Nearest Train : Villedieu-les-Poêles at 24 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : Villedieu-les-Poêles at 24 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Le Moulin de Jean, La Lande at 3 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Carolles-Plage at 44 Kilometres Car: necessary

The cottage is set in two acres of gardens and orchards surrounded by open countryside, fields and woodland, with stunning views over the River Sée valley all the way to Avranches, 26 kms away on the coast.

It is an ideal centre for exploring Lower Normandy and North Eastern Brittany and for activities such as golf, horse riding, tennis, swimming, cycling and walking.

Sites of particular interest such as Le Mont St Michel, the D-Day landing beaches, as well as towns and villages with historical and architectural interest such as Avranches, Bayeaux, Fougéres, and many many others, are easily accessible from here.

The beautiful sandy beaches of Normandy are less than an hour away. Normandy is wonderful walking country, and there are literally hundreds of kilometres of memorable walks through the countryside, or along the coast.

Cafés and restaurants serving wonderful food and wine at very reasonable prices abound (four course lunches including wine and cider for €10-13)

Golf: There is a lovely, undulating 18 hole golf course on the shores of Lake Dathee about 20 minutes drive from here. It is set in beautiful countryside and also has a driving range.
