About the property

Gites at Kermarhin

Our cottages (circa 1700) have recently been totally renovated. Everything is immaculate, comfortable, pretty and clean. They are furnished mainly in oak, in keeping with the original beams. They are centrally heated and have wood burners in traditional fireplaces.

The kitchens are equipped with everything that you would expect, and even have what is needed for eating the famous sea food of Brittany. Each has an electric oven, fridge and gas hob. As well as the normal kitchen equipment and crockery, there are mixers, electric coffee makers, liquidisers and more. Each cottage has a colour TV with video and DVD players. There are radio/CD players, barbecues, washing machines and access to a tumble dryer.

Sunny private terraces overlook the gardens and forest beyond. The orchard, on the far side of the garden has a swing for the younger children who will enjoy seeing the goats and chickens. We provide everything except household linen and your food! No charge is made for water or gas.

Each cottage has two bedrooms: one double bed and two single beds. Each bedroom has a chest of drawers, chairs, lockers and wardrobe.

Traditional open plan ground floor with well equipped kitchen. Large traditional fire place with wood-burner, comfortable arm chairs and sofa. Attractive dining area with french doors leading out to south facing terrace.

About Graham and Roz Jefferies

Roz and Graham both grew up in Dorset (the south west of England). Roz trained as a teacher and has taught in many countries and at many different levels and age groups. In the main this was bought about because Graham was in the army when they married. Graham retired from the army after 30 years service and they decided to move to France. Brittany was very dear to Roz as she had spent many childhood holidays there. So France and Brittany seemed an ideal place to set up their new home. We were lucky to be immediately accepted by the local residents and to be invited to take part in all local activities. In 2001 Roz was invited to become one of the first non French municipal councilors in France where she served for thirteen years. In fact between the two mandates she was the mayor for a week! Graham was a committee member of the local velo club and helped to organise a number departmental cycle races. Roz was for a number of years the president of the Languidic Choral Society. Their director of music at the time is now the Director of the Rennes Opera. Roz and Graham are strong and active members of the Languidic Catholic Church.

Graham and Roz Jefferies purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Graham and Roz Jefferies chose Languidic

Roz came in June 1989 to search for the perfect property and she found it! It was in a small hamlet with, at the time, only one other resident, a retired Breton farmer. It was a traditional Breton stone house which needed little renovation. The garden possibilities were ideal and the views were wonderful. There were two other vacant buildings: one in need of much renovation and an old stable block. We had arrived! We had found a wonderful house so what would we do now? We bought up other buildings and ground and with a grant from Gites de France we turned them into holiday cottages. We moved here permanently in 1991 and work started. Photographs on the walls of the gites show the extent of the work. In less than 12 months we were up and running.

What makes this cottage unique

We had moved into a wonderful Breton community and were treated us as if we were one of them. It is hard to exaggerate their welcome and kindness. They have continued to be very happy to extend the same welcome to everyone who stays with us. We live at the end of lane and there are no houses beyond us. The traffic is only the farmer on his tractor maybe twice a day, and very occasionally a lost car or farm supply vehicle. Apart from the renovation of the buildings and the cultivation of the gardens nothing else has changed in the hamlet. The peace and quiet is the same, the views are equally as wonderful as they were on the day the house was found. We are happy to share our beautiful hamlet with all those who share these values. We are sorry that we do not accept animals but we are sure you will understand when you see and meet the lovely animals we have here.

We live in the village, and are on hand to give assistance and advice when it is needed. We keep a number of small animals which give enjoyment to both children and adults alike. There are two donkeys, six goats four of which are miniature. The latter would love you to watch them climb and dance on their mountains and generally run around enjoying themselves. There are four dogs and a number of cats. All animals are kept under control (except the cats) and do not run around the village.

Relaxation in Brittany

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in Alouette three times now and are looking forward to returning this year. As you approach the cottage through the local farmland, you can feel the pressures of urban living slip away. The cottage is set in rolling countryside but within easy reach of local markets, shops, woods and beaches as long as you have a car. It is as welcoming, clean and comfortable as it appears in the pictures and particularly suited to families with young to early teenage children. Each cottage has a private area to sit outside, perhaps sipping a glass of wine, watching the local wildlife or the children playing in the safe garden and orchard. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a comprehensive folder of information about local amenities and places to see as well as a DVD /video for childrens' emergency distraction if it rains!

The owners live close by and are a fount of knowledge about local culture and amenities, ideas for day trips, local festivals and events. We have particularly enjoyed walking along the River Blavet, searching the rock pools at beaches 30 minutes drive away and the local woodland adventure park. Auray, Hennebont and Port Louis are steeped in history and culture or there is the beautiful and wild coastline - something for everyone.

Tranquility Base

  • 4 of 5

This is a delightful and beautifully renovated cottage buried in the heart of the South Brittany countryside - as advertised. Farming and animals abound. Although the garden is shared, the 2 patios are secluded so we were hardly aware of our neighbours. The coast is easily accessible by car so we visited Vannes, Auray, Carnac and Guidel. Graham and Roz are splendid hosts, living opposite, very friendly and helpful without imposing.

My wife and I have stayed at these gites on numerous occasions. They are just as described in the brochure - immaculate, fully equipped and very comfortable in all weathers. Privacy is assured by the thick walls between the gites and Kermarhin's rural location, perfect for country walks or bicycling on the safe and rarely used roads around the hamlet. The owners, Roz and Graham Jefferies, are delightful people and can advise on where to shop and where to enjoy the nearby beaches and seaside. I have no hesitation in recommending these gites to friends. The fact that we have been there so often speaks for itself.

Away from it all in South Brittany!

  • 5 of 5

Over the past three years we have stayed in Roz and Graham's Gites at Kermahin four times, both in winter and summer, and we have always left feeling refreshed and invigorated and yet utterly relaxed by our holiday. The clean and well equipped Gites and the warm and friendly welcome makes an immediate impression as does the great trouble taken by Graham and Roz to make sure that you have all that you require to make the holiday a real success. Truly, as the brochure says, all you need is food and bed linen.

Kermahin is a tiny hamlet, off the main road and is utterly peaceful . There are excellent walks on farm tracks, in the fields and in the woods and yet the wonderful beaches of South Brittany are only 30 minutes away on uncrowded roads. Graham was most helpful in lending us bikes to explore

the lovely Blavet River valley and with Roz telling us of the best places for meals at all price ranges. Their local knowledge is encyclopedic but then Roz is that rare animal an English local District Councilor!

Finally one cannot close without mentioning the animals which give such pleasure to adults and children alike, donkeys, goats large and small, cats, dogs and chickens. In summary a wonderful place for a relaxing family holiday with children but not for those seeking the bright lights on site.

Owner's Response: Very dear friends who have been regular visitors over many years. They used to run a holiday village themselves in Devon and so they have been very helpful to us with ideas and encouragement. They will be with us again for a very short visit in two weeks time. Many people have come to us on their recommendation.

Review of Alouette Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this cottage for the last three years. The cottage is in an ideal location away from the hustle and bustle of a busy resort, yet within easy reaching distance of the coast and busier places such as Vannes, Auray and Carnac. Close by the villages of Baud and Languidic (10mins) away provide you a range of shops, bars and restaurants should you need them.

The cottage, nestled in a quiet hamlet makes it ideal for relaxation, peace and quiet. The garden and grounds make is a safe place for children to play. We have had some excellent meals in the garden, in the quiet, sun shining and the children playing. The swing and play area, in the orchard is great for young children - plus it allows them another chance to check that the goats are still ok!!

The cottage is very clean and tidy with the log fire an exceptional good utility. Roz and Graham (Owners) live in the hamlet and provide an excellent resource - better than visiting any tourist information office. They really make you feel at home and welcome and do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable.

Owner's Response: The family is coming back again this year. It will be their third visit. One of the joys of having holiday cottages is being able to see children growing up when they come to stay on several occasions.

Kermarhin is a tiny hamlet deep in the beautiful countryside of Morbihan in Southern Brittany. It is situated near the forest between Languidic and Baud, in an area steeped in the Arthurian legend;

Our large, south-facing gardens overlook fields and forest. You will see buzzards wheeling overhead in the clear air, green woodpeckers and many other wild animals and birds. But only the owls will disturb you.

The area is perfect for such country pursuits as cycling and walking. There are good golf courses nearby and swimming from the sandy Atlantic beaches.

Within easy reach are many fascinating places to visit: the nearby town of Auray, Vannes with its cathedral at the head of the Gulf of Morbihan and Belle Isle by boat from Quiberon. Up-to-date brochures and information are provided for you.

Locally, there are good, reasonably priced restaurants while shopping can be done in Languidic (7 km) or Baud (9 km). A little further away are the mediaeval walled towns of Hennebont, and Port Louis. There are waterside restaurants particularly at St Goustan near Auray and at Vannes. During the summer there are many exhibitions and festivals of music and dance.

Other activities within 30 mins: Golf, sailing, riding, walking, cycling, surfing, fishing, tennis, bird watching and many other activities.
