The beautiful and historic cities of Trogir and Split are just a stone's throw away by water ferry or by road. Four national parks are within easy reach by road: Krka with its amazing waterfalls, Biokovo and the amazing Cetina river gorge at Omis, the Plitvice Lakes and the Kornati archipelago with its 140 islands. Day excursions to Dubrovnik and Mostar are easily arranged. Boat trips can be taken to the nearby islands of Brac, Hvar, Vis and Korcula or explore the nearby roman ruins at Salona.

The village of Okrug Gornji has a long gently shelving shingle beach which is perfect for swimming. Restaurants, beach bars and a water sports centre cater for your every need. Daily boat trips and the water taxi to Trogir run from the tiny harbour.

DALMATIAN COAST DELIGHTS...........

The Unesco World Heritage city of Trogir is enchanting. Built on a tiny island and encircled by the ancient town walls with two historic gates its shady narrow cobbled alleys, courtyards and squares are lined with venetian stone buildings and bell towers. Visit the awe inspiring Cathedral with countless treasures and sculptures and admire the architecture of the churches and municipal buildings and their beautiful carvings and interiors. Enjoy a meal or drinks in one of the many restaurants, cafes, pizzerias and ice cream parlours which line the narrow streets. Browse the tiny shops or street stalls with their range of clothes, shoes, bags, jewellery, souvenirs and local artists paintings. Visit the bustling market just outside the town walls or climb to the top of the Kamerlengo Castle for fantastic views. Sit in a quayside cafe and watch the luxury yachts moor up.

Take the ferry trip along the coast to Split and embark near the Roman Diocletian Palace for a fascinating day.

SO MUCH TO DO.........SO MUCH TO SEE.......

Hire a pedalo, jet ski or small boat from the local Beach Sports Centre or try your hand at paragliding or banana boat and rubber ring rides.

Why not be more adventurous and take a Quad & Buggy Safari through the forest and mountain trails of Ciovo or visit the island's Paintballing Centre.

Relax on the beach where you can hire a sun lounger and parasol. The many beach bars offer fast food snacks, ice creams, cool beers, soft drinks and cocktails just yards from you. Stalls sell fresh fruit, juices, pancakes, jewellery and beach goods. The warm sea is perfect for swimming and snorkelling to see the wide variety of fish species which live in the rocky crevices. Make sure to wear jelly shoes or similar for comfort on the shingly beach. For more solitude you can take a walk through the woods to secluded local coves.

For a good day out take a 'Fish Picnic' boat excursion to the nearby island of Solta and the Blue Lagoon with plenty of local snaps and red wine included.

About Cynthia Bidwell-owner or owner's daughter Lynne Barker

My name is Cynthia and I was born and grew up in a small village north of Cambridge in England. I have a grown up son and daughter and four grand daughters aged 14, 12 ,4 and a few months. Family is very important to me. My daughter Lynne helps me to manage the Penthouse View apartment. As a family we visit the apartment often and it is very much home from home to us. We have enjoyed making it a comfortable and relaxing retreat and we have made very good friends in Okrug Gornji village.

I have lived in the same village all my life and am very much involved in the community being a member of the Parish Council, a trustee of the local Day Centre for the elderly and a trustee of our Town Lands Charity. I belong to the Gardening Club and the local branch of the British Legion and was Chairman of our Carnival Committee for many years. I am the practice manager at a local GP practice and have worked there for over 40 years.

My roots will always be in my home village but I love to travel and visit other countries. My partner Simon and I spent 5 years building a 36ft yacht and we sailed thousands of miles around the coast of Britain, across the North Sea and eventually down to the Mediterranean Sea where we kept our yacht for many years and sailed all around the Med. Simon is currently building a 50ft steel yacht behind our house so that we can continue our sailing into our retirement days. Having an apartment base on the beautiful Adriatic coast where we can moor our yacht within view of our own balcony and knowing that it will be safe when we are back home in Britain is I think having the best of both worlds.

We are not wealthy and have worked hard to achieve what we have now but have been lucky that we grew up in a time when that was possible. I think things will be tougher for the younger generations.

Cynthia Bidwell-owner or owner's daughter Lynne Barker purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Cynthia Bidwell-owner or owner's daughter Lynne Barker chose Ciovo

We heard from a friend that the apartment block was due to be built by a local builder who they knew well. We visited the area and fell in love with both the island and the site. We stayed locally several times during the build and were impressed with the quality of the work. We were involved in choosing the floor coverings, kitchen and bathroom fittings and other details which have all meant that this is an apartment which is individual to us. We have become friends with the builder Mijo and his wife Bozena and their family. They live in the apartment block next door and they look after our property for us. We know that Penthouse View and our guests are in safe hands.

What makes this apartment unique

The views from this apartment are amazing and we never fail to be moved by the spectacular sunsets from our balcony. I was determined to have a swinging seat on the balcony and I have spent many a happy hour gently swinging and soaking up the atmosphere. Penthouse View is a wonderful place to recharge the batteries and to take some 'me' time in an otherwise very busy life. It is easily accessible from Britain with a short flight time and then just a 10 minute drive from the local Split airport which is modern and efficient. Our friendly taxi driver Vjenceslav (or Mr V) can meet you at the airport and deliver you to the front door where Bozena will greet you and show you the apartment. I'm afraid there are five short flights of stairs to the top of the building but the view is definitely worth it.

Ciovo Island and Okrug Gornji are an ideal location to enjoy the unique delights of the Dalmatian Coast. You are based in a beautiful island community but have the added benefits of road links to the mainland by bridge which means you can easily explore the wider Dalmatian coast area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Yes the arrangements were exellent and we had a wonderful time. The apartment is absolutely lovely and the views amazing. I think something very special about the

accommodation is that it feels as if every item is chosen with personal care and that makes you feel welcome. The Island is beautiful and there is so much to explore nearby.

THE BEAUTIFUL DAMLATIAN COAST has a host of delights to explore. A water taxi boat trip from the local harbour (15 mins) will take you to the Unesco World Heritage City of Trogir, or go by bus or a leisurely walk (30-40 min). Enjoy a meal or a drink by the waterfront where luxurious yachts moor up whilst their owners explore the delightful Venetian architecture of the historic centre. Wander around the narrow cobbled alleyways, courtyards, restaurants, shops and street stalls or visit the castle. The old city walls shelter many beautiful buildings including the awe-inspiring Trogir Cathedral and just outside one of the ancient gates is a bustling market. Visit the old city of Split (just 25 min drive away) with its amazing Roman Architecture and Diocletian Palace. Explore the vast Roman ruins site at Salona. The Krka National Park (40 min drive) has spectacular waterfalls, lakes and forests to explore. Or why not take a boat trip to one of the many local islands such as Brac, Hvar, Vis or Korcula.

LAZY DAYS

If you feel particularly laid back why not just spend the whole day reading and sunbathing on the balcony. Stock up with plenty of liquid refreshment and goodies and relax on the swinging seat or sun lounger. Put your favourite music on the CD player and mix up one of the delicious recipes in our Cocktail Book. Watch the boats and water activities in the bay and then cook yourself a delicious meal and dine on the balcony whilst watching the spectacular sunset. Finish off with a nightcap on the balcony and admire the night time view or snuggle up on the settee and watch a DVD.

A DAY AT THE BEACH IN OKRUG GORNJI

A short 10–15 minute downhill walk from the apartment will take you to the local beach. It is tempting to spend the whole day relaxing on the beach where you can hire a sun lounger and parasol for the day. The many beach bars offer fast food snacks, ice creams, cool beers, soft drinks and cocktails just yards from you. Stalls sell fresh fruit, juices, pancakes, jewellery, gifts and beach goods and you can even have a massage. The warm sea is a delight for swimmers and the long gently shelving beach with its safety nets makes it a haven for children and non swimmers. Whether floating on your lilo or body board or going for a strong swim this beach is perfect. There is a warm refreshing breeze from the sea especially in the afternoons.

Try your hand at snorkelling to see the wide variety of fish species which live in the rocky crevices. Make sure to wear jelly shoes or similar for comfort on the shingly beach and remember to apply the sunscreen. If you want something a little more energetic hire a pedalo, jet ski or small boat from the local Beach Sports Centre at the end of the beach or try your hand at paragliding or banana boat and rubber ring rides. For more solitude you can take a walk through the pinewoods beyond the harbour to secluded local coves but make sure to take a bottle of water.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT

After your relaxing day on the beach visit one of the various restaurants close to the beach or by the harbour for a lovely evening meal in the perfect setting. The menus are varied and delicious and the waiters are attentive. Finish your evening with a cocktail or two in one of the beach bars whilst watching the sun set spectacularly out at sea. Take a leisurely evening stroll along the beach and listen to the live entertainment or disco music in each bar. The beach area at night is a vibrant and colourful place with a real holiday island atmosphere and the view at night is every bit as beautiful as it is by day. Join one of the weekly Fishermans' Nights with live music, numerous stalls and a beach barbeque. The uphill walk back to the apartment is not so onerous in the cool of the evening especially when you have had a drink or two and once you are back on your own balcony sitting with a nightcap in your hand watching the bright lights and the stars twinkling in the bay all seems well with the world. Just a perfect day……….

DAY TRIPS FROM THE BEACH

For a good day out take a 'Fish Picnic' boat excursion to the nearby island of Solta and the Blue Lagoon with lunch and plenty of local schnaps and red wine included. Tickets can be booked the day before. Various other boat trips are advertised by the harbour, some starting in Okrug and others in Trogir. These range in price and distance, one of the most expensive being a speed boat excursion to the famous Blue Cave.

ACTIVITIES ON THE ISLAND

Why not be even more adventurous and take a Quad & Buggy Safari through the forest and mountain trails of Ciovo or visit the island's Paintballing Centre.

WATER TAXI TO TROGIR This operates from the local harbour every half an hour during the summer (from 8.30am – 11.30pm in peak season) adults 20 kunas, children 10 kunas. It's a short trip along the coast and past the boatyard which takes approx 20 mins and is a very pleasant and scenic way of travelling into Trogir.

Penthouse Apartment is very clean, tidy, cosy and comfortable.

Pent House View is a fantastic apartment with superb views over the bay. We had a thoroughly relaxing week and would highly recommend this apartment. We walked to Trogir a couple of times which was fine in terms of distance but a bit of a test in terms of safety as you have to walk on the road for part of the way. Everybody we spoke to from shop keepers to bus drivers were very friendly and spoke good English which was a massive help to both us and them. They certainly didn't seem to mind anyway. All in all Croatia is a fabulous country and I'm sure we will return.

The ups and downs of a Croatian Holiday

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a taste of beautiful Croatia then this is the apartment to come to. This property on Okrug Gornji was as described . It was comfortable, clean, and well equipped with a view to die for. Our breakfasts were transformed as we started the day on the balcony looking out over the bay and sparkling clear blue sea. The little town of Okrug has a great beach with small white pebbles. Sitting on a sun lounger, reading a book and dipping in to the clean sea became a favourite occupation. There are plenty of small bars if you fancy a beer or some lunch. Neighbouring Trogir with its medieval cobbled streets quickly became the evening destination, catching the water taxi across the bay was just the prelude to the evening. Sitting by the bay watching the ships go by with a drink in one of the harbour side bars was just what was needed. There are many great restaurants to pick and choose from depending on what you fancy. However, prepare yourself as the 'down' side is the steep walk back up to the apartment after a day or evening out.The payoff is the fabulous view when you arrive home and the wonderful sunsets.

Owner's Response: I am pleased that you were happy with the apartment and the view. Enjoying the local beach during the day and then taking the water taxi to Trogir for the evening is one of our favourite ways to spend our day.

A fantastic week away in a clean and well equipped apartment it felt like home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

First impressions were that the apartment was bigger than expected and how clean and high quality the living and kitchen area was. Stepping out onto the balcony was a wow moment as we took in the view, most evenings were spent watching the sun go down from here with a meal and watching the lights twinkling all around the bay.

The swimming was great and the walk back up to the apartment was best tackled in the evening when the heat had abated somewhat.

A trip by boat across to Trogir was cheap and easy giving access to more restaurants, bars, shops and shade.

Thankyou to Cynthia, Bozena and Mr V for a great hassle free holiday.

Fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic place to stay, the views are unbelievable. Yes the walk back from the beach gets to breathing well but this just means you can walk off the evening meal and cocktails. The property is at the top of a hill but this then gives you easy access to the two sides of the island as this is situated at the thinnest part, one side busier that the other. Lots of supermarkets within about 10 -15 mins walk and a great bakery in the centre of the village. We took the very regular water ferry to Trogir most evenings as the atmosphere was great, the ferry cheap and a very pleasant way to finish the evening. So many restaurants in Trogir in a maze of little streets and alleyways. Sip a cocktail while looking at the super cruisers in the harbour. The owners were very prompt in answering any questions and we were picked up by the recommended taxi Mr V who was superb and entering the property was very easy. I would highly recommend this property to anyone unless you have issues with walking up hill.

Penthouse View

  • 5 of 5

Just arrived back from a weeks stay at the Penthouse View apartment. The apartment is fully equipped with everything you need for a very comfortable stay. Set on a testing hill in Okrug Gornji the views from the balcony are wonderful. Pour yourself a wine and relax on the swing chair and watch the sun go down a perfect end to the day. There are two walks down to the sea the one we preferred although slightly longer was through the small village where there is a supermarket, bakery and a small market selling vegetables and fruit. Locals meet at the local cafe bar for there morning coffee and all very friendly.

On the seafront there are many bars and restaurants. Our favourite was Leonardos. The food was delicious and very good portions are served at a good price. I had lovely steaks there and also mussels and the best fried Calamari I have had anywhere. My wife loved the fillets of sea wolf fish they served which she thought was lovely.

You can hire sunbeds from 3 Kunas a day and the sea is so good to swim in. The weather all week was just fantastic. We have been to Croatia the last three years and it has always been the same in June.

Although only at this wonderful apartment for the week we visited Trogir the small island joining the mainland to Ciovo which is just lovely and also Split. You can either get to Trogir walking which takes around 40 minutes or just take the cheap water taxis at 20 kunas which is much better. From Trogir you can then also go by ferry 35 kunas which is a half hour journey and worth a visit. Our favourite trip was to the Krka Waterfalls. What an amazing place this is and a must for anyone visiting. We got to these by taxi with Maria who is Mr Vs wife the guy who will pick you up from the airport if required at a reasonable price. The trip to the falls was cheaper than an organised tour and is private to yourselves and you get picked up when your ready. One tip when your there is you get a ferry to the falls from your drop off point and you can also get back by ferry. We actually walked back which took about one and a half hours with a stop for a picnic we had took with us. The walk is about 4 Kms long but the views are fantastic and you would miss them if you returned by ferry.

Sorry for the long review but the stay was lovely. A very big thank you to Cynthia for allowing us to stay in this lovely apartment and to Bozena for welcoming us when we arrived. ( sorry if I got your name wrong Bozena )

Thank you.
