L'Abricotier is located in half of the grand main building with its own separate entrance via an arched doorway at the West end of the mill. With three bedrooms it comfortably accommodates six people. The gite is named after the wonderful old apricot tree which climbs against the West-facing wall. Formerly the old coach house, it has a split-level ground floor with a charming snug/lounge area complete with fireplace and wood burner, comfortable seating and satellite TV. The kitchen is fully-fitted with appliances and a comprehensive range of utensils, cutlery and crockery. The adjoining dining area has a table and seating for six. Upstairs the three bedrooms have lovely views across the grounds and vines beyond. The master bedroom has it’s own shower and sink unit and there is also a family bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. Lastly you have the choice of two private terraces adjoining the property (South and West facing) with a stone-built BBQ , sun awning and hardwood furniture.

About the property

Le Moulin de Chazotte

Le Moulin de Chazotte is a 16th century French watermill offering beautiful, family friendly self catering holiday accommodation.

Our four exclusive gites are brimming with charm and character whilst offering all the modern comforts and facilities to ensure you have a relaxing and rewarding holiday. The gites vary in size, from La Principale (the main house) which sleeps up to 7 people - perfect for families. Or for a couple looking for a more romantic, private stay, Le Chai, which is a cosy one bedroom hideaway. All gites have their own private terrace but also offer access to 12 acres of grounds and facilities, including the large heated and floodlit swimming pool (12m x 6m) and a variety of outdoor activities and games. See each gites listing for more details.

Located in blissful rural tranquility within the Poitou-Charente region on the French Atlantic coast, only 10 minutes away from historic Cognac and a short drive to the nearest village with that all important local boulangerie. This picturesque region is steeped in Roman and Medieval history and is known for its sleepy villages, Romanesque churches, heritage towns, as well as for the famous and delicious Cognac drink of course.

The history of Cognac: The Cognac area was colonised by the Romans for some 800 years and any town or village with the letters 'ac' at the end or it's name was originally a roman villa (hence names like Cognac, Mesnac, Jarnac etc). The Romans introduced vines and viticulture into the region and so initiated the development of the world-famous drink of Cognac. Nowadays Cognac production is a thriving industry and we have the likes of Hennessy, Courvoisier and Martell almost on our doorsteps. We recommend that you have a conducted tour (and tasting!) of at least one Cognac distillery while you are staying with us.

There are also literally hundreds and hundreds of small family-run Cognac producers in the Charente and we have a close tie with the Chateau Chesnel which produces Cognac and Pineau (a local aperitif based on Cognac) under the family name of Roffignac. There was an intermarriage between the Chesnel and Chazotte families back in the middle ages so it makes for a particularly interesting local visit.

About Laura & Rowan Wickham

Hello there! We are Rowan and Laura Wickham and are the proud owners of Le Moulin de Chazotte.

We purchased the Mill in early 2016. It was a somewhat impetuous decision having first seen it in September 2015 and falling totally in love with the mill, the gites, the gardens, the surrounding area and France in general. Seriously, this place is a little piece of heaven and we are so excited to start running it and welcoming lots of lovely guests.

Rowan is from New Zealand, and Laura is English and we have spent the last ten years living in Zurich, Switzerland.

We are taking over Le Moulin from the fabulous Bob and Jane Todd who lovingly restored it to what it is today. Their knowledge, support and kindness towards us has been invaluable and we cannot thank them enough. They are off to their next adventure in the Pyrenees and we just hope that we can continue the success of the mill in a manner and spirit that continues their legacy.

So, enough about us! If you want to know more, come and visit and we can have a good old natter over a glass of wine or two on the terrace. We look forward to hopefully welcoming you at the Mill!

Laura & Rowan Wickham purchased this house in 2016

Excellent stay!

  • 5 of 5

I very rarely write reviews of places we have vsited but Le Moulin de Chazotte was one of the best houses I have stayed in in over six years of holidaying in France. The facilities were first rate and very spacious (my kids loved having two bedrooms to choose from!). The house was very well kept and included nice touches like some games and books for those rainy days. Plus lots to see in the area.

Two things stand out - Bob the owner was so friendly and helpful and secondly the house just oozed character and charm. I would recommend to anyone!

le Moulin de Chazotte

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful week staying in l'abricotier gite, part of the Moulin de Chazotte .

As a family of 5 aged 3 - 44 yrs we can highly recommend this gite.

Bob and Jane have thought of everything a family would need for a perfectly relaxing holiday.

We were met by Bob on our arrival, having followed their well written directions to the gite. There are plenty of large supermarkets nearby and a good boulangerie within jogging or cycling distance ,

The kitchen is well equipped, has a dishwasher and washing machine and was clean and well maintained.

The whole family enjoyed the pool and the table tennnis provided ,and we were able to meet the other famlies staying there at the weekly BBQ at the beginning of the week , where we all formed friendships for the rest of the week, the children playing together on the field ,whilst the adults supervised over a glass or two of local pineau!

Plenty to see and do in area,or a great place to just relax by the pool with a book.Thank you for a great stay Bob and Jane.

Owner's Response: Those who read Dutch will see that this is a quite complimentary review, so a big thankyou to our 2009 guests from Holland. We regard ourselves as being rather "tucked away from it all" in this beautifully rural part of France so it always fascinates us that we attract visitors from all over the world (South Africa, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and even Brazil in recent years!) as well as from mainland Europe - such is the power of the internet! The Dutch generally put us to shame with their impeccable command of English (of course!) but it's true to say that there are no geographical boundaries to the children, whatever part of the world they come from. Naturally enough, once the children have made their new friends, the adults usually follow suit!

Le Moulin de Chazotte, near Cognac

Beautifully renovated self catering cottages in a lovely setting in the Charente region overlooking vineyards. All properties are tastefully furnished and well equipped and spacious. Facilities are good and include an impressive pool area. Also large field for playing games. Bicycles are available from the owner, together with a canoe for adventures upstream. The owners, Bob and Jane, are friendly and helpful and do everything to make your holiday enjoyable, including a weekly barbecue. Interesting towns of Cognac and Saintes within easy reach. A good holiday for families, including those with older children. Thoroughly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. Once the full summer sun has moved off the field and the evening meal is finished we often see groups of children and parents alike playing rounders or cricket on the field in front of the mill. As the light doesn't fade till gone 10pm the games tend to go on for a couple of hours - it's a great way to ensuring that everyone gets a good night's sleep afterwards!

North Wales to Cognac

  • 5 of 5

We choose this gite from the internet in July 2008.We contacted Bob who gave us directions that sounded complicated but took us straight to the door. What a place spotlessly clean beautiful setting and good swimming pool. The owners are very helpful should you require advice. Cognac has many bars and restaurants, boat trips and canoes are easily booked and i dont speak french! So if this is the area for you with good wine and cognac to boot contact Bob and Jane you wont be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review. We thought long and hard about the pool when it was all at the planning stage. They say size doesn't matter but at 6m x 12m a pool is big enough for any number of excited children and also for adults wanting to swim lengths and play water polo etc. Safety is a serious issue so the pool is securely fenced with a lockable gate but there is still ample room all round the pool for the sun loungers. We chose salt water rather than chlorine treatment because it's kind to the eyes and skin and lovely to swim in. The added feature of a fresh-water solar shower has proved very succesful too. With minimal maintenance and virtually no added chemicals the pool stays crystal clear and inviting throughout the season. The pool has been purposely located about 50m from the gites so that the happy splashing and noise of the children isn't too intrusive! Floodlit swimming under the stars also seems to be a very attractive idea particularly to teenagers! What seems to be very clear is that a decent-sized and well-kept pool is absolutely essential for this type of family holiday in the sun.

Moulin de Relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

Our family spent 2 idyllic weeks here in August '09. Our hosts made us feel so welcome and did everything to make our stay so relaxing. Rooms are wonderful and kept very clean. The Moulin is in a fantastic setting with plenty of walks and rows of grape vines as far as the eye can see. A 5 minute drive to the local bakery gave us fresh croissants for breakfast every morning and a restaurant meal in the evening. The pool was wonderful for cooling down at the end of the day or just for days off from touring. Make sure to explore Cognac and its wonderful bars and shops and you have to visit one of the Cognac producers. We can thoroughly recommend the Moulin for a wonderful away-from-it all holiday - don't worry, there's plenty of games and fun on site to keep the kids happy!

Owner's Response: Many thanks Kevin and family. The nearest shops to the mill are at Cherves Richemont which is about 3k away. There is a boulangerie a boucherie, a pharmacie and a small Spar supermarket plus a bar/restaurant. Right in the centre of the village is a boulodrome - which is a very popular boules area shaded by trees and with benches for watching the action. We've known active holidaymakers to walk, jog or take the bikes up the the shops but more often it's a quick trip up to the shops by car and back for breakfast with the pains and croissants. For more serious shopping there are four or more massive supermarkets in Cognac and even a branch of Lidl (so I'm told!).

Translated as the Mill of Chazotte, we are a 16th century French watermill offering beautiful, family friendly self-catering holiday accommodation near Cognac, France.

Our four exclusive gites are brimming with charm and character whilst offering all the modern comforts and facilities to ensure you have a relaxing and rewarding holiday. All gites have their own private terrace and also offer access to 12 acres of grounds and facilities, including the large heated and floodlit swimming pool.

Located in blissful rural tranquility within the Poitou-Charente region on the French Atlantic coast, we are only 10 minutes away from historic Cognac and a short drive to the nearest village with that all important local boulangerie. This picturesque region is steeped in Roman and Medieval history and is known for its sleepy villages, Romanesque churches, heritage towns, as well as for the famous and delicious Cognac drink of course.

Nearby Activities: The peaceful and gently rolling terrain of this beautiful area of vineyards and woodlands is perfect for exploring on foot or by bike and it's a bird-spotters paradise. Restaurants of all types are abundant within a short driving distance from the Mill. Several theme parks (eg Futuroscope) are great for a day out but there are also aquariums, zoos, historic chateaux, many roman sites, ancient churches and abbeys all within reach by car. Local towns have excellent food markets and brocantes (flea markets) are common in the summer. Canoeing on the Charente and pedalling on the Velorail near Cofolens are great for working up an appetite! A day out to the beach at Royan or Ile d'Oléron is a must combined with a meal at one of the fresh-fish restaurants. Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Saintes and Angouleme all make great day trips.

Golf: With a choice of 20 first class golf courses in some stunning locations, Poitou-Charentes is a great destination for a French golf holiday, with the temperate climate and long hours of sunshine enabling play all year round. The beautiful links course of Golf de la Prée overlooks the Baie de l’Aiguillon and Ile de Ré (1.5 hour drive from the Mill). The 18-hole Golf du Cognac in Saint-Brice is particularly popular with British visitors and is less than 30 minutes away. Slightly further afield (2 hour drive) is the Golf du Haut Poitou, where an 18-hole challenge and 9-hole pitch-and-putt course overlook the beautiful lake of Saint Cyr.

Water sports: The West coast of France boasts some of the finest sandy beaches in Europe. The mill is located only an hour from Royan where you can combine a day basking on the beach with a superb meal at one of many fresh-fish restaurants. At St. Georges de Didonne (next to Royan) is a magnificent sheltered and sandy beach which is perfect for younger kids. There is now also a pretty hair-raising tree rope-walking centre! For the more confident swimmer you can drive just a few miles along the coast from Royan to the Côte Sauvage and indulge in some surfing or body-boarding in the perfect Atlantic waves. Closer to home, and possibly for a cloudy day, we have water activity centres at St. Jean d'Angély, Angouleme and Jonzac. Even closer still (7 minutes by car!) is a recreation lake at Thors where you can hire pedalos or enjoy swimming in the lake before enjoying a good and very reasonably priced meal at the restaurant by the lake. Of course you can always go for a swim in the pool right here too!

Family Friendly: In addition to our well equipped gites to provide you all the comforts of home, the Mill also offers 12 acres of gardens, including our own river! You don't even need to leave the Mill to enjoy a day of canoeing, badminton, table tennis, table football, cricket or rounders on the field, or just lounging by our stunning saltwater pool (larger than average at 6m x 12m) - floodlit, heated and securely fenced.
